1 Colsterworth CE Primary School Newsletter October 2016 Dear Parents/Carers I cannot believe we are already at the end of term 1. Where has the time gone? We have had a fantastic start to the new school year. Over the last few weeks, I have seen some super learning taking place around the school. Our Shining Lights celebrations on a Friday have been a showcase for staff to celebrate, with the rest of the school, the new skills that children have been developing and learning. Well done to all of you who have received a certificate this term. We have had such a busy few weeks. At the start of the term, Y4 had a visit to Woolsthorpe Manor as part of Gravity Fields to learn all about the Plague; more recently Y6 had a visit to the Lincolnshire Showground to take part in a construction day. Our Harvest Festival was held at the church last month. It was lovely to see so many of you there and joining our service. Your support and donations were very much appreciated. - reports of these events (by our school reporters) can be found further on in this newsletter. The first of our Maths Café workshops was a great success. The feedback we received was very positive. As you read this, the staff are busy planning more workshops based on different aspects of English and maths. Our next café session will be after half term and will be focused on reading. Watch this space! There are still many things to look forward to before we break up for half term. We have our reading day on the last day of term, followed by the PTFA end of term parties. Please look out for further information regarding our Christmas activities next term. We always endeavour to give you as much notice as possible about any upcoming events. Finally I would like to thank everyone for making my first term as Headteacher here at Colsterworth such an enjoyable and rewarding one. 2 NUTS REMINDER We have children in school who have severe allergic reactions to nuts. Please can we ask you to not send nuts of any sort in packed lunches including Nutella/peanut butter spread. With your support we will keep all of our children safe. STAFFING Sadly, we say goodbye this Friday to Miss Jamison. She has been a great asset to the school will be sorely missed. We wish her well in her new post in Northern Ireland. After half term, Miss Arms-Rawden will be teaching full time in Darwin and Mrs Coulter will be teaching in Faraday on a Friday. A maternity cover is being negotiated for Mrs Jordan. The new member of staff will join us at the beginning of the new term to allow them to spend time in the classroom with Mrs Jordan before she departs. TRIM TRAIL UPDATE - Good news! Over the summer we received 10,000 from the Big Lottery Fund. This, along with a donation from the school budget and also the PTFA, means we now have enough money for our new trim trail. This is planned to be constructed during the half term break. Reading Questionnaire reminder! If you have a reading questionnaire still to return, could you please hand it in at the office before we break up on Friday. If you have not received a questionnaire, we really would appreciate your feedback. Please pop in to school to pick one up. Thank you! School Christmas Dinner - Thursday 15th December Please place your order for your child s Christmas dinner by midnight on Monday 5th December If you have not already registered your child with Ideal School meals please do so at least 36 hours before ordering a Christmas dinner as the order will not be processed.

3 Pupil information sheet If you have not yet completed the pupil information sheet that was given out earlier in the term, could you please return it to the school office at your earliest convenience. It is very important that we have this information as not only does it give us up to date contact details, it also lets us know whether or not you give permission for any photographs taken of your child - at sporting events or on educational visits etc - to be uploaded on to the school website or in the local press. Thank you. Pantomime visit The cost of the school trip to the Pantomime (13th December), will be confirmed after half term. H a r v e s t Fe s ti v a l We went to the church to celebrate this year s harvest festival on 27 th of September We even had a special visit from the Bishop of Grantham who made a short speech at the end to say how amazing our harvest festival had been. As part of our harvest we sang; listened to Rev Lomax; prayed and offered food whilst the choir sang. Have you ever done any of these things before, maybe at a different school? The food was given to Grantham foodbank. We collected a staggering 49.5kg of food! We asked some pupils their opinions. Bailey in foundation said It was amazing, This was the first harvest he had been to. He liked singing. His favourite song was Harvest time is here again. He brought in a green apple. We also asked a teacher, she said The children had a lot of input into the church harvest. Her favourite song was A Farmer s life for me. She brought in a fine mango. 4 Construction day On Thursday 29 th September, Y6 all went on an exciting school trip to a construction day. We all took part in amazing and awesome activities like stone carving and clay moulding. Here are some interesting comments that children in our school and Miss Gibson have made. Leo said My favourite thing was carving letters into small smooth limestone. Charlotte said her favourite part was Making animals out of soft clay. Brooklyn was very excited about the day as it gave him lots of ideas for potential jobs for his future. Miss Gibson said her most special thing was seeing the potential that she never knew that she had for stone carving! We all had tons of fun that very day and every one wished we could go again. At the end of the long and exciting day we got together in the hall at the showground and had a medal ceremony. Our Headteacher Miss Gibson got a shiny medal (that we all liked) for her enthusiastic participation during the day! Sadly that was the end of our construction day. 5 On Thursday 22nd September, Y4 went to Woolsthorpe Manor and had a great experience learning all about the terrible Black Death. Evie said it was an amazing school trip and had learnt a lot of interesting facts for the future. Thomas found it a tiny bit scary, but enjoyed it. A lucky five members of Y4 got to have a really realistic wound made up of make up. They then had to see the plague doctor who wore a beak made of leather. Reporters: Mollie R and Tomas M Maths Café This month saw our first ever maths café at Colsterworth! We all set up the hall for the café where adults could explore all the new ways to work out multiplication and division questions. Grace explained that she loved seeing the parents interact with the exciting questions. Everyone had lots of fun and children, staff and parents have said they enjoyed it and hoped we would be holding more cafés n the future. Joely said that she enjoyed looking at what all the other classes were learning about. Hopefully we will be able to enjoy another maths café next term to learn even more inspiring maths.
