Abstract This paper describes the major technologies implemented in the latest generation of HP ProLiant 100-series servers. These technologies include dual-core and quad-core processors, Double Data Rate-2 (DDR2) and Fully-Buffered memory modules, Lights-Out 100 management, multifunction network interface cards, the most recent server deployment utilities, and the latest serial input/output (I/O) technologies. Introduction HP constantly advocates, tests, and adopts new industry-standard server technologies that improve the performance, capacity, and reliability of ProLiant servers. This paper summarizes the processor, memory, I/O, and management technologies implemented in the latest generation of the ProLiant 100-series servers. For complete specifications of all ProLiant 100-series servers, see the HP website at Processor technologies ProLiant 100-series servers use the latest multi-core technologies from Intel and AMD. A multi-core processor has two or four separate execution cores on the same physical die so that it can perform more work within a given clock cycle. To take advantage of multi-core processing, software must be multi-threaded so that the processor work load can be distributed across multiple execution cores. Intel Xeon processors The dual-core Intel Xeon 3100 and 5200 sequence processors and quad-core Intel Xeon 3300 and 5400 sequence processors are based on the Intel Core microarchitecture. The Core microarchitecture uses less power and produces less heat than previous generations of Intel processors. Using Hyper-Threading technology, these multi-core processors offer wide execution paths for highly efficient instruction processing. Intel Xeon 5000 sequence processors can simultaneously execute four software threads, thereby increasing processor utilization. To avoid saturation of the front side bus (FSB), the Intel 5000 chipset widens the interface by providing dual independent buses. The Intel Core microarchitecture includes these additional technologies that improve per-watt performance and energy efficiency: Hardware Virtualization, Enhanced Intel Speed-Step Technology, Supplemental Streaming SIMD Extension 3 (SSSE3), and Intel Execute Disable Bit technology. 1 Xeon dual-core processors The 64-bit Intel Xeon 3100 and 5200 sequence processors combine performance and power efficiency to enable smaller, quieter systems. Xeon 3100 processors include 6 megabytes (MB) of L2 cache per core and a maximum front side bus speed of 1333 megahertz (MHz). The Intel Xeon 5200 sequence processors are similar in architecture to the Xeon 3100 sequence processors (Figure 1). The Xeon 5200 processors use 45-nanometer (nm) technology resulting in high performance (up to 1666-MHz FSB speed) and enhanced power efficiency. Both the Xeon 3100 and the 5200 sequence processors are compatible with IA-32 software and support single-processor operation. 1 For additional information about Intel processors, see the HP technology brief titled AMD Opteron and Intel Xeon x86 processors in industry-standard servers at 2

Block diagram of dual-core Intel Xeon 3100 and 5200 sequence processors L2 Cache Xeon 3100: 6-MB L2 cache and 1333-MHz FSB Xeon 5200: 6-MB L2 cache and 1066-/1333-/1666-MHz FSB ProLiant servers supporting the Xeon 3100 sequence processors use the Intel 3200 series chipset while Xeon 5000-based servers use the Intel 5000 chipset. These chipsets support Error Correction Code (ECC) memory for a high level of data integrity, reliability, and system uptime. ECC can detect multiple-bit memory errors and locate and correct single-bit errors to keep business applications running smoothly. Xeon quad-core processors The quad-core Intel Xeon 3300 and 5400 series processors use 45-nm technology and an architecture using two dual-core processors, each with a 6-MB L2 cache (Figure 2). Each core pair shares a 6-MB L2 cache, and each of the two cores can access the full 6 MB if necessary. Xeon 3300 series processors support an FSB speed of 1333 MHz. Xeon 5400 series processors support or 1666-MHz FSB operation. Xeon-based ProLiant 100-series servers employing Xeon 3300 or 5400 processors use Intel 5000 series chipsets that support dual independent buses, DDR2 DIMMs, and PCI Express I/O slots. Figure 2. 4 AMD Opteron processors AMD Opteron multi-core processors include Direct Connect and HyperTransport technology. Their method of parallel, point-to-point interconnectivity provides scalable bandwidth among the processor, I/O subsystem, and chipset. 2 Opteron processors have an integrated memory controller that directly supports PC (DDR2-800) DIMMs. The AMD architecture replaces the FSB with direct communication links between each CPU, between CPU and I/O, and between CPU and memory. Select HP ProLiant 100-series servers support AMD Opteron quad-core processors. The dual-core AMD Opteron 1000 and 2200 series processors include a dedicated 1-MB L2 cache per core (Figure 3A). Second-generation Opteron 2200-series processors run at up to 3.0 GHz. The quad-core AMD Opteron 2300 processor (Figure 3B) includes a dedicated 512-KB L2 cache for each core and a 2-MB L3 cache shared by all cores. The quad-core AMD Opteron also uses Dual Dynamic Power Management architecture, a design that separates the core and memory power planes. Figure 3. This split-plane design allows granular power management of the Opteron processor to reduce energy consumption while increasing performance. 2 For additional information about AMD processors, see the HP technology brief titled AMD Opteron and Intel Xeon x86 processors in industry-standard servers at 4

Processor socket technology ProLiant 100-series servers use Land Grid Array (LGA) socket technology to enable higher CPU bus speeds. Instead of using pins for contacts, the processor packages use gold-plated copper pads that touch processor socket pins on the motherboard. HP engineers developed a special installation tool to simplify processor installation and reduce the possibility of damage to the socket pins. Table 1 identifies the processor types supported by the ProLiant 100-series models. Table 1. 6 Memory technologies Depending on the model, ProLiant 100-series servers support fully-buffered, unbuffered, and registered PC (DDR2) DIMMs as indicated in Table 2. Unbuffered DDR2 DIMMs place the load of all the DDR2 devices on the address bus, so they are typically used in systems with a maximum of four memory slots. Registered and Fully-Buffered (FB) DIMMs are used in systems with more than four memory slots. Registered DDR2 DIMMs place a maximum of two loads per DIMM on the memory bus, regardless of how many DDR2 devices are on each DIMM. The point-to-point FB-DIMM architecture enables the electrical load (and signal integrity) for each channel to remain constant, even as FB-DIMMs are added. Table 2. Memory technologies supported by ProLiant 100-series servers ProLiant server DL185 G5 DL180 G5 DL165 G5 DL160 G5 DL120 G5 ML150 G5 ML115 G5 ML110 G5 Memory Type Registered PC (DDR2 667 MHz) Registered PC (DDR2 667 MHz) Registered PC (DDR2 667 MHz) Fully buffered PC (DDR2 667 MHz) Unbuffered PC (DDR2 800 MHz) Registered PC (DDR2 667 MHz) Unbuffered PC (DDR2 800 MHz) Unbuffered PC (DDR2 800 MHz) In contrast to the first generation of DDR memory, DDR2 memory devices operate at a lower voltage (1.8V) to further reduce power consumption. 3 DDR2 devices also use higher clock frequencies to increase data transfer rates and use on-die termination control to improve signal quality. At 200 MHz (double-clocked to an effective frequency of 400 MHz), DDR2 increases memory bandwidth to 3.2 GB/s. I/O technologies The latest generation of ProLiant 100-series servers feature PCI Express, Serial-Attached SCSI (SAS), and Serial ATA (SATA) I/O technologies. PCI Express allows adding expansion cards with various capabilities to the system. SAS is a serial communication protocol for direct attached storage devices such as SAS and SATA hard drives. PCI Express technology The PCI Express (PCIe) serial interface provides point-to-point connections between the chipset I/O controller hub and I/O devices. Each PCIe serial link consists of one or more dual-simplex lanes. Each lane contains a send pair and a receive pair to transmit data at the signaling rate in both directions simultaneously. PCI Express 1.0 has a signaling rate of 2.5 Gb/s per direction per lane, resulting in an effective maximum bandwidth of 2 Gb/s (250 MB/s) per direction per lane after accounting for 3 For additional information about DDR2 memory technology, refer to the HP technology brief titled Memory technology evolution: an overview of system memory technologies at 6

20 percent serial encoding overhead. Therefore, a PCIe 1.0 x4 link with four send and receive pairs has an effective bandwidth of 2 GB/s and a x8 link has an effective bandwidth of 4 GB/s. This flexibility allows slower devices access to a single lane with a relatively small number of pins while giving faster devices more lanes as required. For example, the latest Smart Array SAS controllers have x4 and x8 PCIe I/O connectors. The PCIe 2.0 specification (supported by the ProLiant DL160 G5 server) doubles the per-lane signaling rate of PCIe 1.0 from 2.5 Gb/s to 5 Gb/s, resulting in a total bandwidth of approximately 1 GB/s per PCIe link (Figure 4). Figure 4. A PCIe 2.0 device can be used in a PCIe 1.0 slot and a PCIe 1.0 device can be used in a PCIe 2.0 slot. Table 3 shows the level of interoperability between PCIe cards and PCIe slots. Table 3. Point-to-point links increase data throughput and improve the ability to locate and fix disk failures. More importantly, the SAS architecture solves the parallel SCSI problems of clock skew and signal degradation at higher signaling rates. 4 The ProLiant 100-series servers support 3.5-inch SAS and SATA drives through the use of the SAS SC44Ge Host Bus Adapter (HBA), the Smart Array E200 controller, or the Smart Array P400 PCIe Controller card (Figure 5). 4 For more information about SAS technology, refer to the HP technology brief titled Serial Attached SCSI technology available at 7

Figure 5. HP SAS controllers HP Smart Array E200 Controller HP SC44Ge HBA HP Smart Array P400 Controller HP SC44Ge HBA The SC44Ge HBA provides basic RAID 0/1 connectivity for up to eight devices 5 : four through a x4 internal connector and four through a x4 external connector. The HBA supports both 3-Gb SAS and 1.5-Gb SATA devices, and configurations can be mixed (SAS and SATA), allowing maximum flexibility. Eight 3-Gb/s ports provide a total storage bandwidth of up to 24 Gb/s, nearly four times the speed of a dual-channel U320 SCSI adapter. HP Smart Array controllers HP Smart Array controllers offer advanced RAID solutions with a battery-backed write cache (BBWC) available as an option. The cache buffers disk writes so that disk I/O can be handled efficiently. The battery prevents information in the buffer from being lost during an unexpected system shutdown. In the case of a complete system failure, the controller and disks can be moved to a different server, where the controller will flush out the cache to the disks after power has been restored. In the case of a controller failure, the cache module and disks can be moved to a working controller, where the cache will be flushed out to the disks. The battery will last up to two days without receiving any power from the computer. The E200 controller provides the best price/performance. The E200 controller has a x4 PCIe I/O connector and is available in full-size and mezzanine card form factors. The full-size E200 card has eight SAS ports and uses DDR1-266 cache memory. The E200 mezzanine card has four SAS ports. The E200 supports RAID 0/1 and can be upgraded for RAID 5 with the 128-MB BBWC module. The P400 controller is ideal for internal disk storage and for storage enclosures that require advanced RAID capability. The P400 controller has a x8 PCIe I/O connector and supports RAID levels 0, 1, 1+0, and 5. The controller supports mirror splitting for RAID 1 arrays. This functionality allows the 5 More devices may be connected using SAS expander technology. 8

user to split a RAID 1 mirror into two separate RAID 0 arrays 6. The controller also supports mirror recombining, which is combining two RAID 0 arrays into a RAID 1 mirror. The battery-backed write cache is not required for this feature. RAID 6 (double parity) is available when using the BBWC. Some server configurations include a BBWC on the P400 controller. The BBWC is also available as an option. The BBWC is required for capacity expansion, which allows the user to add a physical disk to an existing array. The controller then recalculates parity and balances the data across the disks. During the expansion, data and logical structures on the array are preserved. The P400 controller supports a recovery ROM and Online Drive Flashing. In the event of a failed attempt to flash the controller s ROM, the recovery ROM reverts to the previous good ROM. With Online Drive Flashing, disk drive firmware updates can be pre-loaded onto the controller and the controller will flash the firmware onto the disk drives at the next reboot. HP Embedded SATA RAID The HP embedded SATA RAID that comes standard on most ProLiant 100-series servers offers basic data protection. The RAID is implemented through the option ROM and device driver. Unlike OS RAID, SATA RAID allows booting from a degraded RAID 1 array (that is, a failed drive) without manual intervention. With OS RAID, a rescue floppy/cd or re-ordering of drives is required under certain failure scenarios. Although OS RAID is implemented through the operating system, SATA RAID is independent of the operating system. In the hardware RAID model, RAID operations are performed by a dedicated controller with dedicated memory and processor. Hardware RAID is achieved through controllers such as HP Smart Array controllers. HP Embedded SATA RAID supports RAID 0, 1 and 10, and a maximum of four nonhot plug SATA drives. RAID 5 is available on the ProLiant ML115 G5 server. HP Embedded SATA RAID supports Microsoft Windows, Linux and NetWare operating systems. Server deployment Deployment is a crucial step in setting up a server. HP has developed deployment utilities that are tailored to a specific environment. HP ProLiant Easy Set-up CD The ProLiant ML110 G5 and ML115 G5 servers include an Easy Set-up CD that allows quick, singleserver deployment suited for small and mid-sized businesses. The CD includes tools and utilities that simplify server installation tasks such as these: Preparing the server for a specific operating system (OS) Loading applicable licenses and documentation Configuring the array controllers and storage devices Performing diagnostics The Easy Set-up CD is tailored to a specific server model (ML110 G5 or ML115 G5) and loads operating system drivers that have been optimized to maximize performance. Embedded utilities are leveraged to provide a customized configuration or to set intelligent defaults for the server hardware and array controller. The Easy Set-up CDs provide assisted installation for Microsoft Windows For more information on splitting or breaking a mirror, refer to the white paper RAID 1(+0): breaking mirrors and rebuilding drives HOWTO, available at 9

Server and Windows 2008 Server operating systems (32- and 64-bit). The CD also provides drivers for various Linux distributions for manual installation. Check the server QuickSpecs to determine the exact Linux distributions supported. System administrators can use the CD in an Assisted mode or Manual mode. In the Assisted mode, the Easy Set-up CD guides the user through the process of loading the OS using vendor-supplied CDs. In the Manual mode, the user can load the OS first and then use the Autorun capability of the Easy Set-up CD to access the appropriate OS support software. After the server has been configured, the Easy Set-up CD uses HP Insight Diagnostics to check various subsystems including the processor, I/O, storage array controllers, graphics, memory, and remote management. Additional information on the Easy Set-up CD is available at HP Rapid Deployment Pack The HP Rapid Deployment Pack (RDP) is a proven solution for quick and easy deployment of ProLiant ML and DL servers. Available as part of an HP Care Pack service option, RDP provides automated deployment and software provisioning of ProLiant servers. An HP Service specialist performs the following basic RDP installation services: Installs and configures RDP software on a ProLiant ML or DL deployment server Deploys and configures up to five target servers using a pre-defined script or a customer-supplied image Verifies successful image deployment Provides orientation on RDP software usage, features, and management practices Custom RDP installation services are also available. Custom services can cover a variety of customer requirements as outlined in a Statement of Work (SOW) and overseen by an experienced HP Project Manager. HP RDP is available for systems running Windows or Linux platforms. Additional information on HP RDP is available at: Cost-effective manageability ProLiant 100-series servers support HP Lights-Out 100 (LO100) Remote Management. HP LO100 Remote Management is firmware that provides remote server access and control capabilities through an Ethernet interface. The HP LO100 management interface is active even when the OS is not operating. The LO100 management processor obtains its power from the auxiliary power plane of the server, so it is available as long as the server is plugged into an active power source. HP LO100 Remote Management is compatible with industry standards including Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI) 2.0 for hardware health, and Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) and Secure Shell (SSH) technology for secure communications over public and private local area networks. HP LO100 is fully accessible using popular web browsers including Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 (Microsoft Windows clients), Firefox 1.5 (Windows and Linux clients), and Mozilla (Windows and Linux clients). HP LO100 is also accessible using System Management Architecture for Server Hardware Command line Protocol (SMASH CLP) for Telnet and SSH sessions. 10

The latest firmware version of LO100 supports virtual DVD-ROM, USB 2.0 for faster virtual media. HP LO100 Remote Management is available as either an integrated function (LO100i) found on select DL100 servers or as an option card (LO100c) typically used for ProLiant ML100 servers. Advanced functionality on LO100i is activated with license keys now available in the form of Flatpacks and Electronic Key Distribution. The features of the LO100c and LO100i Advanced Pack Licenses are basically equivalent; specific differences in functionality between the LO100i and the LO100c are listed in Table 4. Table 4.
