DTE Energy s Renewable Energy Program I.D.E.A. (Improving Detroit through Entrepreneurship Advancement) Irene Dimitry March 17, 2010
Detroit Edison plans to rapidly increase the use of renewable energy in the coming years Currently only about 1% of Detroit Edison s supply portfolio counts toward RPS targets DTE Energy s goal is to use a diverse mix of fuels to provide energy that is reliable, affordable, and environmentally sound while rapidly developing and deploying tomorrow s innovative energy solutions.
Detroit Edison s renewable energy efforts will be in support of Michigan s RPS Legislation Compliance Targets Qualifying Technologies Ownership Constraints 10% of retail sales must come from Michigan-based renewable sources by 2015 (enough to power about 400,000 homes) New capacity requirements for Detroit Edison 300 MWs by MWs by 2015 Wind Solar Some Co- Generation Biomass Water Up to 50% owned by DTE Energy At least 50% by 3 rd party
Detroit Edison s Renewable Energy Plan Primary focus on wind farm development Pursuing 15 MWs of solar installations ~ 1,200 MWs Up to 50% owned by utility At least 50% owned by 3 rd parties Limited availability of landfill gas, biomass, hydro in Michigan Advanced cleaner energy and industrial co-gen opportunities limited by legislation Pilot program for customer-owned solar Remainder the majority is expected to be wind energy 4
Typical schedule for wind farm development Communications & Community Relations Project Development Interconnection Procurement Permitting Design Construction Start Year 1 Year 2 Year 3
Wind energy development in Michigan s Thumb Region DTE Energy Confidential and Proprietary Development Activities ongoing since 2007 More than 400 land owner agreements to allow wind development on approximately 75,000 acres in the Thumb Primarily farmland Six operating meteorological stations collecting wind and weather data Wetlands being identified Noise, site lines, zoning, and other issues being evaluated Participation in Huron County, local township and community planning commission meetings
Total Acres for Wind Development Easement Acres ~ 75,000 7
Wind energy will build on our tradition of environmental stewardship

Customer-Owned Solar Pilot Program 5 MW in total nameplate capacity $25 Million Program Size (Budget) Customers install solar systems Must follow Net Metering guidelines 20-year contracts to purchase Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) Pre-pay a portion of the RECs to help customers offset the upfront costs of solar installations. 14
Detroit Edison-Owned Solar Pilot Program 15 MW in total nameplate capacity $112 Million budget over 4 years Sited on large leased rooftops, ground-mounted or on DTE facilities Using standard site easement agreements Purpose of pilot program is to gain knowledge and experience 2010 plan assumes installation of 2MW of solar at multiple sites 15
Renewable Energy Jobs Design and engineering services Direct construction jobs Ongoing operations and maintenance Detroit Edison planning ~ $2 billion in renewable generation investments! Jobs in the community Supporting construction: materials, meals and lodging, transportation, fuel, permitting, communications Resulting from increased tax revenues to the community and increased landowner income through easements and royalties Training programs to develop skill sets required by contractors and subcontractors Manufacturing jobs for renewable energy equipment attracted by statewide renewable investments and smart economic development policies 16
Making a difference today... To enroll, go to greencurrents.com or call The GreenCurrents program allows customers the option to elect to pay a little more on their electricity bills in order to encourage the development of renewable energy sources in Michigan. The purchase of RECs by DTE Energy and others has so far enabled the construction of four wind farms and biomass energy plants in Michigan. Benefits like Reducing Air Pollution Preserving the Environment Fueling the Michigan Economy 17
