Balfour Area Elementary Band Information Package Dear Parents/Guardians of Students in Grade 5, As we complete the final few weeks of school for this year, we ask you to take some time to discuss with your child their interests and desires to become involved in band class, which will be starting in September The BALFOUR AREA SCHOOL BAND PROGRAM is an ACCREDITED CLASS sanctioned by the Regina Board of Education and is offered to students in grades Registrations for the fall Grade 6 Band Class are now being accepted. Students registering for Grade 6 Band do not require previous musical experience. We start at the very beginning with note reading and teach each child how to play their instrument. Grade 6 is intended to be the beginner level for learning to play a band instrument and it is therefore very important that students register for Grade 6 Band in order for them to continue with band in grades To follow are specifics regarding band class: Why should my child join band? Something to keep in mind when making a decision about involvement in the band is that everyone is born with musical ability. It can either be nurtured or squandered. Researchers in child development have identified music as one of the seven intelligences, just as important as linguistic and logicalmathematical intelligence. Music provides an avenue for creativity and self-expression. Participating in music adds richness to the quality of life. Students who join band will learn how to play an instrument and read music. Playing an instrument and reading music will help students develop motor skills, decision making skills, communication skills, and organizational (multitasking) skills. In addition, band class helps to improve student selfdiscipline, responsibility and team work. Playing an instrument can also help build a child s confidence. Each time your child plays their instrument, they will improve. They also develop confidence by playing an essential role in the band. All members of the band contribute to the overall sound. No one on the band team sits on the bench. Students in the Balfour Area Band Program also have a unique opportunity to be part of a noncompetitive team made up of students from eight different schools. Your child will interact with students from other schools and make long-lasting friendships that will carry into high school. 1
The Band Staff: Mrs. Deborah Skoczylas (Skooch-eh-loss) and Mr. Graham Hoffman are full time band teachers in the Balfour Area. They teach band at 9 different schools throughout the week. Their office is at Balfour Collegiate however you can reach them by phone simply by leaving a message with your school secretary. They will be able to get back to you promptly. is the best way to contact your band directors should you have any questions or concerns. Ms. Gail Empey is also part of the band team. She is the Director of Music at Balfour Collegiate. Feel free to contact her at Balfour ( ) should you have any questions regarding the high school music program. Mr. Hoffman Mrs. Skoczylas Ms. Empey How band class works: A common misconception is that band is an extra-curricular activity. The school band program although optional, is a class and runs during school hours. Students receive one 45 minute lesson (called a sectional) per 5-day week at their home school. They also receive a 1-hour Full Band rehearsal per 5-day week at Balfour Collegiate. This is where a number of schools will rehearse together as one band. Students are pulled out of regular classes for approximately two hours per week. The band schedule is on a rotation so your son/daughter will rarely miss the same class each week. If you have concerns about your son/daughter missing classes for band, we would like to encourage you to talk to the grade six teaching staff at your school. They are very supportive of the program and offer a variety of ways to ensure that your son/daughter does not fall behind as a result of participating in band. 2
Student Responsibilities Students must regularly attend sectionals and full band practices with all of the required materials (instrument, book, binder/folder, pencil, positive attitude). They also need to be responsible in checking the schedule and arriving to rehearsals on time. REGULAR practice is ESSENTIAL for improvement and enjoyment! Students are welcome to practice at home and/or at school during supervised recess hours. Students are expected to participate in all band performances. Most performances are scheduled in the evening for the convenience of most parents. There are two major concerts per year held in early December and late May as well as a mini-concert in early November. Students will also perform at Optimist Band Festival in March and will have the opportunity to play at their home schools in May. It is our expectation that because this is a class, students who register for band complete the entire school year. All students are making a commitment to learn an instrument, but they are also committing to be a part of the band team where each and every player is important to the success of the team! Parent Responsibilities: Parents/guardians are responsible for providing an instrument for their child. It is important that your child have a good quality instrument (which is not necessarily the most expensive). Poor quality instruments might look great, but they may frequently break down and will not produce a good sound regardless of the child s effort. An instrument that does not work can be very frustrating, especially for the beginner students who is eager to learn. As a parent/guardian your enthusiasm and encouragement play an important role in your child s success. Occasionally, listen to them practice. Ask them to play their favorite tune for you. Attend the concerts. Encourage your child when things become frustrating or when the novelty beings to wear off. Contact your band director should you have ANY concerns so we can work together to assist your child. Volunteer when you can. There are over 250 students in the band program each year and to provide students with the best musical education, we need parent volunteers. BAMPA, the Balfour Area Music Parents Association is key to the success of the program. The association makes it possible for students to attend trips, clinics, wear uniforms, win scholarships, awards, and more. Please consider volunteering for a role on the association and plan to attend the bi-annual meetings. 3
Instrument Selection: We visit all Grade 5 students during the month of June to introduce the instruments found in the band and help them decide which instrument is right for them. There are many factors to consider when selecting an instrument including face structure, size, and interests. All students have been carefully interviewed and tested to ensure that they will have success on their instrument. Your son/daughter has received a Instrument Recommendation Certificate indicating our top two instrument recommendations. The instrument recommended is the one which we feel your child will be most successful. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the instrument selected, we encourage you to discuss this with us at one of the Band Registration Nights. Below we have provided a brief description of the band instruments and a few of the considerations we make when selecting students for those instruments: Flute: The flute is a small, high pitched instrument. This is a challenging instrument that requires finger dexterity, a preferable lip structure, and patience as it is difficult to learn at first. Although it is a small instrument, it requires a large amount of air. This instrument is NOT recommended for students with braces. Clarinet: The clarinet is a small instrument that usually plays the main melody line in the band. It uses a reed to make a sound. Playing this instrument will help develop strong lip muscles and finger dexterity. It can be a challenge for students with very small fingers. Bass Clarinet: The bass clarinet is similar to the clarinet although much larger. It requires a large amount of air. The bass clarinet usually plays bass lines in the band rather than melody lines. This can be a challenging instrument for students will small hands. Many students start on the clarinet in Grade 6 and switch to Bass Clarinet in Grade 7. Saxophone: There are three types of saxophones. Most students start on the smallest saxophone: Alto Saxophone. Some students later switch to the Tenor or Baritone Saxophone. These instruments are played similar to the clarinet (with a reed). The Tenor and Baritone Saxophone require more air because they are larger. Trumpet: The trumpet is a high pitched brass instrument that frequently plays the melody in the band. This instrument requires a lot of air and a good, tight lip buzz. This instrument is NOT recommended for students with braces. French Horn: The French Horn is a unique sounding instrument that requires a tight buzz. This is a very challenging instrument that requires a good sense of pitch. This instrument is NOT recommended for students with braces. 4
Trombone: The trombone is a low pitched brass instrument that has a unique feature. Rather than valves (or buttons), the trombone uses a slide to add more notes. Students with very short arms may face challenges when playing this instrument. Students will need to loosely buzz their lips to create a sound. Baritone/Euphonium: The Baritone or Euphonium sounds similar to the trombone although it is shaped more like a Tuba. It has valves (or buttons) rather than a slide. Some students start on the Baritone and switch to Tuba when they are a little bit bigger. Tuba: The tuba is the largest brass instrument. It most often plays the bass line in the band and has a very low sound. The tuba requires a large amount of air and a very loose lip buzz. Percussion: A percussionist has a unique job. They play a variety of instruments with their hands or with sticks rather than with their air. This can include various drums, bell instruments, and auxillary instruments such as the triangle, shaker, woodblock, and chimes. Percussionists focus on two instruments to develop good technique: snare drum and bells. It is recommended that percussionists have previous piano experience to help them learn the bells. As there are two main instruments for the percussionist to learn, he/she will need to practice extra, especially at the start of the year. Instrument Rental/Purchase Details: We recommend that you rent an instrument for your son/daughter in their first year of band rather than purchasing the instrument. Although we take time to carefully place students on an instrument, occasionally the instrument does not work for the student. Both music stores in Regina offer Rent to Own programs that allow you to use your rental fee towards the purchase of your instrument at any time. Whether you choose to purchase or to rent, there are two music stores in Regina which provide this service. They are St. John s Music and Long and McQuade Music. It is a good idea to reserve an instrument before the end of June to ensure your child will have instrument waiting for them in September. Your son/daughter received pamphlets detailing the rental programs for each music store. We will have extra pamphlets available on the Band Registration Nights as well. The Regina Board of Education does rent out a limited number of the following instruments: Bass Clarinet, Baritone Saxophone, French Horn, Baritone/Euphonium, and Tuba. Details regarding School Board owned instruments can be obtained on the Band Registration nights. The rental fee for these instruments is $120 per school year ($12 per month). 5
Most instrument rentals range from $10 per month to $50 per month. If you think you may need financial assistance with renting an instrument or paying band fees, please contact one of the band directors. All students have an opportunity to participate in band regardless of financial circumstances. Students requiring financial need may have limited instrument selection. Looking to purchase an instrument or already own one??? PLEASE feel free to contact us for professional advice on the instrument before making a big purchase. It is important that your son/daughter play on an instrument of good quality to ensure that they experience success in band. If you already have an instrument at home, we encourage you to bring it to a Registration Night so that we can make sure it is in good condition for your son/daughter. Head Start Clinic: The Head Start clinic will be taking place on Friday, September 14 th from 6:30pm 8:30pm and Saturday September 15 th from 9:00am 11:00am. It is a ONE TIME event. Students will receive approximately 4 hours of intensive instruction from a teacher specializing on their instrument. We find the Head Start clinic to be a highly successful and positive experience. It is VERY IMPORTANT that all students attend the head start clinic. STUDENTS SHOULD NOT OPEN THEIR CASES, TRY TO PUT THEIR INSTRUMENTS TOGETHER, OR ATTEMPT TO PLAY THEIR INSTRUMENTS BEFORE THE CLINIC UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES!!! This can be very tempting, but we highly recommend that you do not allow your son/daughter to open their instrument until the clinic to ensure they do not develop bad habits or potentially damage the instrument. Regular Grade 6 Band rehearsals will start up the week after the head start clinic is held and conclude at the end of May. Extra- Curricular Activities: The Balfour Area Elementary Band Program offers a variety of extra-curricular activities that your son/daughter may be interested in. These activities are optional and a great addition to the band experience. Flute Choir holds rehearsals on Mondays, Jazz Band on Wednesdays and Percussion Ensemble on Thursdays. All of these groups are open to any band students that are interested. We encourage all students to consider participating in one or more extra-curricular music activity to further their development as a musician. More information regarding extra-curricular activities will be provided in the fall. 6
Band Registration Nights Monday, June 18 th and Wednesday, June 20 th 6:00PM 8:00PM at Balfour Collegiate Parents/guardians and prospective Band students are invited to drop in any time on either day to register for band class. At that time, we will have an opportunity to meet you, answer any further questions you may have and do a final check to make sure the student s teeth structure, mouth shape, lips, size of fingers, and general body size are appropriate for the instrument the student wishes to play. Please see the attached page regarding what you will need to bring to the band registration night.
