Name 2. What is Cyberbullying? Appreciating Others Sometimes bullying happens because of misunderstandings among people of different backgrounds. Read the newspaper and other sources to look for information and pictures about customs and traditions of various cultures, religions, nationalities and ethnic groups. Use the space below to compare and contrast these groups. Do you think we all have more in common or more things that make us all different? What makes each group unique and worth appreciating? Assessment: What one thing were you surprised to learn during this lesson? 4
Name 3. Cyber Terms You Should Know Word Search Directions: Find the cyber terms in the word search below. The terms may be found vertically, horizontally or diagonally. Two word terms are together without a space. Definitions of these terms can be found in the series Anti-Cyberbullying: Cyber Terms You Should Know or online at H Q Q J B N X F D G H A U E C T A G X C L L J N U N R D O Y R S P P W A O I S O R I W D B O Y W P M G R C N Z C V S R E L B M I Y E N Y K Y P A M A R L F N P T S M I L I K N L O T I G E L S I L L R B N B K B H N V I S Z I U A R O H G G H R G F P E T B A K P M T J L S E O A R Z R I E L E P U I X A A L B S E R O K S O M I M N B T C Y B E R S T A L K I N G O S G Y E C A P S R E B Y C G C M C L A R I V O G U U S S Z H H I P A D D R E S S U N V R D K ANONYMIZER BASH BOARD BLOCKING CYBER BULLYCIDE CYBERSPACE CYBERSTALKING CYBER THREATS FILTERING FLAMING GO VIRAL HAPPY SLAPPING IP ADDRESS ISP MONITORING TROLLING Assessment: Are there any other terms about this topic you think should be added to this list? If so, write the term and its definition. 5
Name 4. The Effects of Cyberbullying? Understanding Actions and Effects Look through editions of the newspaper for a current problem affecting your school or community. It can, but doesn t have to involve, bullying or cyberbullying. Use the space below to describe details about the problem, what action people are taking because of it and what is happening because of their actions. Problem: Effect: Action: Effect: Action: Effect: Action: Assessment: Briefly write what you think about how the people are handling the problem. Are their actions having positive or negative effects? 6
Name 5. Who Participates in Cyberbullying? Bullying/Cyberbullying in the Comics Look through several editions of the comics section and find instances of bullying or cyberbullying. Pick one and identify the bully, the victim and bystanders. Why is the cartoon character being a bully? How is the victim responding? What are the bystanders doing? Is anyone standing up for the victim? Use the space below to re-draw this cartoon to show a positive interaction among the characters. Assessment: What message do you think the cartoonist was trying to express? Do you think it was positive or negative and why? 7
Name 6. Who Participates in Cyberbullying? Finding Courage to Do the Right Thing It takes courage to stand up to bullying or cyberbullying. The newspaper is often filled with articles about people doing courageous things. We hear a lot about police officers, firefighters and soldiers doing brave things. But many ordinary people show courage every day. Find a story about courage. Use the space below to record the Who, What, When, Where, Why and How of the story you selected. Who? (Who showed courage?) What? (What happened?) When? (When did this take place?) Where? (Where did this happen?) Why? (Why did this courageous person act/react the way they did?) How? (How did his/her actions/reactions affect others?) Assessment: Explain why you think the people involved were courageous. 8
Name 7. How to Respond to Cyberbullying? Create an Upstander Poem An acrostic poem is a poem in which the initial letters of the lines, taken in order, spell a word or phrase. Each line should relate back to the central theme. To help you start thinking about ways you can act to protect someone else from bullying or cyberbullying, create an acrostic poem using the word upstander. According to the National School Climate Center, an upstander is someone who recognizes when something is wrong and acts to make it right. U P S T A N D E R Assessment: Write a sentence or two about what you learned about responding to or preventing bullying and cyberbullying. 9
Name 8. How to Respond to Cyberbullying Conflicts in the News Select at least two news stories that show examples of how people treat each other. Briefly summarize each in the space below. Which group would you like to associate or be friends with? Why? Give specific examples from the news stories. Assessment: Briefly write what you learned doing this activity. 10
Name 9. How to Respond to Cyberbullying Writing an Editorial Study how newspaper editorials are written. Based on what you have read, write a persuasive editorial using facts and opinions expressing why cyberbullying is so hurtful and why people should stop this hurtful activity. Introduction: Write one or two sentences to introduce your topic. Body: Write the facts about the subject here. Conclusion: Write your opinion on the subject here. Assessment: What was the most difficult part of this lesson for you? 11
Conflict Resolution Tips Use these tips with the Conflict Resolution graphic organizer on the next page. Behavioral Techniques 1. Don t negotiate when angry. 2. Forget the past and stay in the present. 3. Focus on the problem, not the person. 4. Communicate feelings assertively, NOT aggressively. Express concerns without blaming the other side. 5. Expect and accept another s right to disagree. Don t push or force anyone to think the way you do; work to develop common agreement. 6. Don t view the exercise as a competition where one has to win and the other has to lose. Work toward a solution where both parties have some of their needs met. Understand that not everyone will be 100% happy with a compromise. 7. Build power with NOT power over others. 8. Thank the person for listening. NOTE: If you re involved or witness bullying or cyberbullying Do not attempt negotiation. Ask for help from a trusted adult Parents or guardians Teacher or other school official If necessary, the police Tips to Avoid Escalating Conflict 1. Identify and define the conflict in specific terms. 2. Focus on areas of common interest and potential areas for agreement. 3. Never jump to conclusions or make assumptions about what another is feeling or thinking. 4. Listen without interrupting; ask for feedback if needed to assure a clear understanding of the issue. 5. Think of alternative solutions. 6. Discuss the pros and cons of the alternatives. Listen to others, and state your case. 7. Select the best course of action that ALL can agree upon. 8. Implement only the parts of the plan that are in agreement. Remember, when only one person s needs are satisfied in a conflict, it is NOT resolved and the conflict will most likely continue. 9. Follow-up to evaluate the effectiveness of the plan and make necessary adjustments. 10. Look for a win-win solution Source for this list of techniques was modified from a list originally used in a PBS teaching resource entitled Briefing Paper: The Taliban and the War on Terror 12
Name 10. How to Respond to Cyberbullying Conflict Resolution What is the Problem/Conflict? Use the newspaper (print or online) as a resource to find a current conflict among individuals or groups of people. Identify and define the conflict in specific terms listing all parties and their concerns. Problem/Conflict Parties Concerns What are some possible solutions? List different solutions you develop. Remember in cases of bullying or cyberbullying ask for help from a trusted adult parents/ guardians, teacher/ other school officials and, if necessary, the police. What is the best compromise? As a class discuss the possible solutions and work on finding the best compromise. Write down what the group has agreed is the solution to the problem(s) stated above. Explain why you believe it is the best option. Follow up: Do you think there are any unresolved issues? If so record them here and explain why. Would you involve outside intervention (Parents, Teachers, Police, etc.)? If so when? Assessment question: What was the most difficult part of this activity for you and why? 13
Name 11. How Can Cyberbullying be Prevented? Finding Positive Role Models in the News Look through several editions of the newspaper and find a person who is a positive role model. Briefly write why this individual is a good role model. Next, pretend you are going to interview this person for the newspaper and create four to five questions that you would ask this person about being a role model. Trade questions with a friend and answer their question as you think their role model would. Date/Section/Page Headline is a positive role model for young people because Question (What you would ask the person about being a positive role model.) Answer (To be completed by another student in class pretending to be the person you selected) Assessment question: What did you learn about good/positive role models? 14
Name 12. How Can Cyberbullying be Prevented? Use Technology For Good/Protect Against Bad The Internet, cell phones and other electronic devices can be used both respectfully and disrespectfully. As a class look through recent editions of the newspaper (print or electronic) for stories about new inventions and discoveries. Could any be used to promote respect? Peace? Understanding? Could they be misused to spread disrespect? Pick one invention or discovery and analyze its possible uses. Describe ways it could be used to promote respect, peace and understanding, and outline reasons why people should guard against misuse. What is the invention/discovery? Promoting Respect, Peace & Understanding Protecting Against Misuse & Spreading Disrespect On a separate piece of paper, write a description of a respect/peace/understanding creation of your own invention. If you re artistic, draw your invention. Consider using images from the newspaper to make a collage of your invention. Assessment: What one new thing did you learn today about respecting others? This lesson was adapted from an NIE supplement, written by Hollister Kids, for Operation Respect
