Scholarships Marlborough House School believes that excellence should be recognised and therefore scholarships are awarded to children who show outstanding potential in Art, Music or Sport. The scholarships are prestigious awards and are a public recognition of talent in these areas. The awards are made as a result of strictly moderated open competition and assessment and are not means-tested. For those children who are awarded a scholarship, Marlborough House offers a tailored enrichment and support programme throughout their time at the school. Please note that all external scholarship candidates will also sit the school s usual academic entry assessments and will need to meet the school s academic entry criteria. Marlborough House currently offers three types of scholarships Art, Music and Sport for entry into Year 5 and Year 7 in September Scholarship awards for the successful candidates will take effect from September All candidates will take part in the assessments in the Spring Term before the year of entry. Scholarships are open to both external and internal candidates (ie current MHS pupils). For all three types of scholarships children will be expected to: Demonstrate a high degree of motivation and commitment. Possess interest and determination. Show the capacity to improve through practice. Have the ability to listen and to respond to skilled teaching. Display advanced skills and ideas for their age. We offer an enviable Enrichment Programme for our scholars which include a benefits package relevant to each particular type of scholarship. In addition, there may be a small fee discount awarded to successful candidates in recognition of their scholarship. Please see further details on the individual subject pages as to the benefits offered to individual scholars. When parental circumstances justify it, scholarships may be enhanced by means-tested bursaries, see Bursaries section on the next page. The funds available for scholarships and bursaries are carefully controlled by, and are at the discretion of, the Governors of Marlborough House School. Candidates will be judged on their performance in the assessments and Marlborough House reserves the right not to award any scholarships if there are no candidates of sufficient merit. The deadline for applications for 2016 is Friday 5 th February
Conditions of All Scholarships Scholars are expected to set themselves high standards in the way they conduct themselves both in and out of school. It is generally expected that all scholarships will be held for the duration of the pupil s career at Marlborough House. However, all scholarships are reviewed annually and Marlborough House reserves the right to withdraw a scholarship if, in the opinion of the Headmaster and after careful monitoring, the pupil s behaviour or performance is below expectations. The amount of any scholarship award package is regarded as a confidential matter between the parents and the Headmaster. Parents are expected to respect this confidentiality and any breach of this understanding is likely to lead to the withdrawal of the award. Scholarships are not transferable to any senior schools and separate assessments take place in Year 8 for entry to senior schools in Year 9. If parents of existing Marlborough House pupils would like more information on scholarships to senior schools please contact the Assistant Head (Academic), Mrs Amanda Stables. Within this booklet there is further information regarding each of the three types of scholarships and application forms. Bursaries It is important to distinguish between bursaries and scholarships as there is often confusion. Bursaries are separate from scholarships. Bursaries are offered in recognition of financial need and, in some cases, can add to a scholarship award. The amount of a bursary is calculated on an individual basis. All bursaries are means-tested according to the guidelines laid down by the Independent School Bursars Association and parents are asked to complete a comprehensive financial circumstances form. It is recommended that a bursary application pack should be requested at the same time as requesting scholarship information, if applicable. Bursary application packs are available on request from Mrs Catherine Catt, Assistant Bursar, on or by to assistantbursar@marlboroughhouseschool.co.uk. The deadline for bursary applications linked to scholarships is Friday 5 th February
General guidance on applying to Marlborough House School Parents are encouraged to arrange a visit to Marlborough House to meet the Headmaster, have a tour of the school and discuss a scholarship application. To make an appointment please contact the Registrar, contact details as below. For further details about any matters concerning admissions and to make an appointment to visit Marlborough House please contact the Registrar, Mrs Fiona Wooley on or registrar@marlboroughhouseschool.co.uk Parents of external and internal candidates should complete the relevant scholarship application forms. The closing date for receipt of applications is Friday 5 th February For external candidates, Marlborough House s usual academic entry criteria will apply to all applicants for scholarships and part of the scholarship assessment day will be given over to completing our academic assessments. These will take the form of assessments in reasoning, literacy and numeracy together with a general ability test and will seek to establish the following: That the candidate will benefit from and be challenged by the school s educational programme. That the candidate will be comfortable with the range and depth of this programme and the pace at which it is delivered. That the educational and general standards of the school will be maintained or improved for all its pupils. That the candidate will embrace the school s values. Scholarships will only be awarded to pupils who meet the school s academic entry criteria. References Parents of external candidates should send a confidential reference form for completion to the Head or teacher of their child s current school. The Head of the candidate s current school will be asked to comment as to the candidate s academic ability, attitude and behaviour, involvement in the school community, talents and interests, and any other special circumstances such as special education needs or a disability. The reference may also include the results of tests taken at school such as reasoning scores or SATS. The Head, or ideally a subject teacher or coach, will be asked to comment separately on the candidate s aptitude in art, music or sport to include ability, commitment, interest and experience. In addition, parents will be asked to provide copies of the candidate s most recent school reports. In the case of internal candidates, a confidential reference with details of the pupil s aptitude for art, music or sport will be required from a teacher/coach not connected with Marlborough House School. The Head s reference is not required for internal candidates. 4
Our Admissions and Assessment Policy 1. Equal Treatment: We welcome children from many different ethnic groups, backgrounds and creeds. Human rights and freedoms are respected but must be balanced with the lawful needs and rules of our school community and the rights and freedoms of others. All candidates for admission will be treated equally, irrespective of their, or their parents, race, colour, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, association with a national minority, orientation, property, birth or other status. 2. Disability: At present, our facilities for children with disabilities are limited, but we will do all that is reasonable to ensure that the school s culture, policies and procedures are made accessible to children with disabilities. When a disability or special educational need is made known to us, we will consult with parents and make reasonable adjustments to our admission procedures and arrangements to enable a child, if he/she is able, to satisfy our admission requirements. Please see the Marlborough House School Disability Policy for further details (available on our website or from the school office). 3. Special circumstances: We recognise that a candidate s performance may be affected by particular circumstances, for example If he/she is unwell when taking tests or has had a lengthy absence from his/her school; 3.2. If there are particular family circumstances such as a recent bereavement; 3.3. If there is a relevant educational history, for example education outside the British system; 3.4. If the candidate has a disability or specific learning difficulties; 3.5. If English is not the candidate s first language. In any of these cases, we may request further information such as a medical certificate or educational psychologist s report and any associated correspondence or details from the pupil s current school (including samples of work) or any family history of dyslexia, as we consider necessary to make a fair assessment. Reasonable adjustments will be made to ensure that a candidate is not disadvantaged by any of the above circumstances. Examples of reasonable adjustments include an extra assessment day at the School to ensure that the candidate has the opportunity to prove his/her full potential, extra time allowed or documents in large print during the academic assessment and using wheelchair accessible rooms during the assessment day. 5
Frequently Asked Questions What is a Scholarship? A Scholarship is the recognition of excellence and potential in a particular field such as Art, Music or Sport. Scholars benefit from the school s enviable enrichment programme and commitment to excellence in all areas of school life. In addition, scholars may receive a small reduction on school fees. Which Scholarship should my son or daughter apply for? Some parents take advice from their current school art teacher, sports coach or music teacher; however our Heads of Department are also happy to give general advice on this. Parents are encouraged to visit the school and meet the Headmaster and other staff, and this will provide the opportunity to discuss the Scholarship assessment standard. What is the difference between a Scholarship and a Bursary? Scholarships are awarded to pupils who have demonstrated ability and potential in their chosen discipline regardless of their financial circumstances. Bursaries can be given in recognition of financial need and can be applied for by the family of any prospective pupil. The amount of any bursary awarded is calculated on an individual basis. Bursaries are means-tested so parents are asked to complete a comprehensive financial circumstances form which is then assessed by the school governing board. How much can scholarships be worth? Scholarships may attract a small fee discount however the key benefit is the tailored enrichment programme offered by MHS together with the additional benefits package as detailed for each of Art, Sport and Music. How many scholarships are awarded? There is no fixed number of scholarships given in any discipline each year. How will my child s progress be monitored? There is a tailored enrichment programme of support in place for each of the 3 disciplines and each scholar is carefully monitored by the appropriate Head of Department. Records of achievement are kept and teachers will discuss with a scholar their progress, and targets are set and reviewed at the beginning and end of each term. Does my child need to be registered to apply for any of the Scholarships? We recommend you do register your child before applying for a Scholarship as this will mean that they may be offered a place at the school even if not successful in the Scholarship application, subject to availability 6
