2 What's the difference between the Simple Present and the Present Progressive? Simple Present always true general statement of fact everyday activities habits general truth Present Progressive temporary started in the past happening at the moment of speaking will probably end at some point in the future Exercise 3, p. 14 Example: I usually start the coffee pot before I take a shower. 3 Non Progressive Verbs AKA Stative Verbs Most verbs show action. In the progressive form, they are actions in progress at a particular time. Some verbs aren't actions! These verbs can't be progressive! = non progressive or stative Some verbs have two different meanings and can be both an action verb and a stative verb. Can you think of some verbs for each category? Past Progressive simple past began and ended at a particular time in the past Rita stood under a tree when it began to rain. past progressive used with the simple past to show that once action began earlier and was in progress when the other action occurred Rita was standing under the tree when it began to rain past progressive can be used in both parts of the sentence to show that two actions are in progress at the same time. While Rita was waiting for the rain to stop, she was thinking about what to buy at the store. Watch Wallace & Gromit. Describe the action using the past simple and progressive.
