1 The Parable of the Lost (Prodigal) Son 50mins lesson Learning Aims: To know the story of the Lost (prodigal) son To be able to identify the four stages of reconciliation in the Parable of the Lost Son Starter (10mins) - have you heard of a story of a missing person? - why do you think people go missing? - how do their relatives react and feel? - what happens if they see them again? Introduce students to the story: about a boy who went missing because he decided to: he got his father to give him his inheritance, and then disappeared, to spend it all. Activity 1 (10mins) Drawing Dictation Read Lk 15:11-32 Could be read as a class Or as a drawing dictation: students make quick stick drawings as they hear the story read, or use key words - explain that to ask for one s inheritance from his family, was effectively to say that it was as if they were truly dead to you and you were cutting yourself off from them for ever. - explain that pigs were taboo unclean animals for jews, and for a jewish boy to work as a swineherd and share their food, was the absolute pit of living. Activity 2 (20mins) Word Jigsaw Hand out key words of the passage (Resource: Lost Son Jigsaw), which have been cut up and placed in an envelope (or get the kids to do the cutting up) Ask the students to arrange the words in order of the story
2 Ask the students to write out the story in their own words, using the key words they have placed as cues. (Only allow students to refer to the bible to check the order of events, or compare with your drawing dictation ) Feedback the correct order of words/ ask the students to compare and read out some of their stories. Plenary (10mins) Hand out a small strip of paper to each student. You have this written on the whiteboard, or read it out to them: You meet the Lost Son as you are walking through the countryside. He asks you for some bread, and you offer to share your lunch with him. He explains his situation to you. He s ready to commit suicide. He doesn t have the courage to go back to his Father. You have a small piece of paper with you and a pencil. Without saying anything, you open up the paper and start writing: what do you write?
