1 Mr. Nelke: Voic Website: Algebra II Course Expectations Keep this in your notebook for future reference. Course Overview: This is the third course in the high school math sequence, following Algebra I and Geometry. Students will expand their understanding of number systems to include complex numbers and will grow more proficient in their use of algebraic techniques. This course focuses on the study of functions: linear, quadratic, exponential, logarithmic, square root, cubic, and those involving inverse variation. Other topics that will be studied are combinations and permutations, probability, the binomial theorem, calculate and interpret measures of variability, and geometric and arithmetic series. This course meets the third year math requirement for high school graduation and college admission requirements. A Texas Instruments TI-83 or TI-84 graphing calculator is required for this course. What you can do to succeed in this class Treat others with consideration and respect. Pay attention to the ideas being contributed by your peers as well as by the teacher. Participate in all class activities. This includes completing investigations, taking notes, asking questions, and, when asked, putting sample work on the board. Give every task your best effort. Complete the assignment to the best of your ability that evening and come to class with questions. Study for all quizzes and tests. Studying for a test begins the day the unit begins. Re-read your class notes, correct your homework assignments, reworking problems missed and read your textbook. Class begins as soon as the bell rings. Be on time every day with your previous days assignment out. Come to class prepared with required materials: textbook, graphing calculator (TI-83 Plus or TI- 84), paper, graph paper, and two different colored writing utensils. Be organized. Label your work with assignment numbers and dates. Be willing to take risks in your daily work. (IDK or? is not an acceptable attempt) Keep an open mind. If you need help outside of class time, I am available most afternoons and before school. Please contact me to set up an appointment. Grade Breakdown: Grades will be weighted as follows: Assessments 70 % Unit Tests: Unit tests will be used to determine levels of conceptual understanding at the end of each unit. They will be announced in advance and no retakes will be allowed since it is assumed that each student will be prepared in advance. Quizzes: There will be quizzes given throughout each unit. Most quizzes will be announced, however there is the possibility of a few pop quizzes. No retakes will be allowed. There is not a cumulative semester exam. Instead, all exams will be cumulative.

2 Students will be allowed to correct up to three tests per semester provided that they have no more than 2 missing assignments in that unit. Students whom follow the correct process will receive up to ½ the points back for each problem that has been corrected. Problems on a test that have not been attempted are not eligible to be corrected. Daily Work 30% Daily class work: Students will complete a lot of work in-class each day. Daily homework: Students will be assigned practice homework on a daily basis. It will be due at the beginning of class the two class periods following the day it was assigned. Homework is graded on a five-point scale with points given for completion and work shown. All problems must be attempted in order to receive full credit for the assignment. I a student is unable to complete a problem, credit will be granted for that question provided that he/she write a meaningful question about that problem in the workspace on there homework page. Homework not completed on time may be turned in for ½ credit until the unit assessment has been given. Assignments missed due to absences are given one day per day absent to complete. It is the student s responsibility to turn this work in to be scored. All daily notes and assignments are posted on on my school webpage. Academic Honesty: It is expected that every students will adhere to the school code on academic honesty. Any student suspected of providing work that is copied, borrowed, or in any way not his/her own work will have a discipline review sent to an administrator for investigation. Grading Scale: The following grade scale will be used to determine your grade. Grades will be rounded to the nearest whole number at the end of the semester % B % C % D % A 84-86% B 74-76% C 60-66% D 90-93% A % B % C- 0-59% F All daily work is posted on my classroom calendar at Grades will be updated online every two weeks. You may access the link to the Online Progress Reports at the above website also. Absences: If you have an excused absence, you will be given credit for any missed work that is made up within the same amount of time that you were absent. You are responsible for getting the work you missed, including class work, homework, and warm-ups. All class notes will be posted on the calendar of my classroom webpage. If you have an excused absence on the day of a test, quiz, or homework quiz, then you should be prepared to make it up the day you return to school. If you are absent the day before a test, you will be expected to take the test on the assigned day since all tests will be announced well ahead of test day. If you have an unexcused absence, you will not receive credit for any missed work. Students are expected to take a make up exam during class or after school within 5 days of the test. Failure to do so, could result in a score of zero. If the student chooses to make up the exam during class, then he/she is expected to have class work and homework assignments completed for the next day. Tardies: Class begins with the bell, it is expected that you will be in your seat, with your work out, ready to begin.

3 Leaving the room during class: Students are required to sign out when they leave the classroom with a time and destination and sign back in with the time of return. Students will be allowed five passes per semester. These are to be used for bathroom trips, drinks, etc. Exceptions will only be made for students with identified medical conditions allowing more frequent bathroom use. When possible, please use the bathroom during passing period. Club/Study time: Students leaving class on block days to attend a club, must sign out stating which club they are attending on that day. Calculators: Students will need to bring a graphing calculator to class every day. Inglemoor High School recommends the TI-83 plus or TI-84 graphics calculator. The calculator is a tool to be used appropriately during class time. I reserve the right to clear any student s calculator memory or reset graphing calculators. The memory on all graphing calculators will be reset immediately prior to every quiz or exam. Classroom Rules: Gum, food, and drinks are allowed in class as long as all trash is cleaned up at the end of each class period. One class warning will be given per semester. The second warning will result in the loss of this privilege for the remainder of the semester. You will be asked to remove all hoodies and headphones in class. There are no breaks once a test or quiz has started. A discipline review will be sent to your administrator for any cell phones/media devices seen or heard in class. Wearing head phones or ear plugs in class is not permitted at any time. Please unplug upon entering the classroom. Cell phones usage is permitted in class for the following purposes only: 1) Use of a graphing calculator app while working on a class assignment. Using a cell phone calculator app on a test is not permitted at any time. 2) Accessing his/her District Google account to view documents associated with this class only. Extra Credit: Additional projects or assignments for extra credit do not exist in this course. Textbooks: The Algebra II textbook is Prentice Hall Algebra 2. Replacement cost for the book is $ Please be careful with your book, cover it, and avoid water damage. Water damaged textbooks are charged the full replacement cost of the book. The textbooks are available online and a student can choose not to check out a paper copy of the book if s/he prefers not to carry the textbook back and forth to school.
