1 CONSERVATION QUEST Start this trail at the lion enclosure. Each question matches a number on the map. Follow the numbers around the Zoo to see what you can find out. LIONS These lions don t come from Africa. Where in India do they come from? Why are they at risk of becoming extinct? I am an lion Male African and Asiatic lions look different. Now circle four differences between these two. Name which is the African and which is the Asiatic lion? There are less than 350 Asiatic lions left in the wild. Think about how many people are just in your school or college - imagine if that was all the people left in the world! I am an lion
2 bats Bristol Zoo is home to one of the largest and rarest species of bats in the world. Which species are they? These bats come from the Comoros Islands. Sadly there are less than 1000 left in the wild. As you enter the bat enclosure press the button on the television opposite the viewing window to watch the cartoon. Why are the numbers of bats so low? Because of disease Because of deforestation Because they are hunted for food These bats keep the forests healthy by spreading seeds. How do bats spread these seeds? Think about what these bats eat and what comes out the other end! amphipod Bristol Zoo is working to conserve many species of amphibians that could become extinct if nothing is done to help them. Can you name two species of amphibian that are being bred here? What is the name of the deadly fungus that is killing many amphibians worldwide? Can you name one thing the keepers have to do to keep the animals free from disease? Look at the picture of Harry the Amphikeeper reptile house The Reptile House is home to many reptiles that are threatened in the wild. Can you name four reasons why they are threatened? Can you name a species of slow-moving reptile found at Bristol Zoo that is almost extinct in the wild due to the pet trade? Look in the cabinet near the exit.
3 aquarium At the entrance you will see a tank containing native white-clawed crayfish. Up to 70% have been lost from rivers in the south west of England because of the introduction of signal crayfish from North America. Why are signal crayfish causing the decline of native white-clawed crayfish? Continue through the Aquarium. Many people and animals rely on fish for food. Watch the film towards the exit to help you answer the question below. What do these letters stand for? M S C By buying food with this logo on, you are helping to reduce overfishing and make sure there will be enough fish for animals and people in the future. As you leave the Aquarium stop and look at the invasive species display on the left hand side. What three step plan can you follow to help protect our rivers, lakes and ponds from invasive species such as the American signal crayfish and zebra mussel? C C D monkey jungle The animals here need trees to live in, but often these are chopped down for wood. When people buy paper and wooden things, they can help by choosing the ones with the special FSC symbol. Why do Bristol Zoo and SANCCOB want to help African penguins? Now move down into the tunnels. Scientists have developed a computer programme and camera to identify wild penguins. Many wild gorillas are killed for meat by hunters and miners looking for a mineral which is used in mobile phones, laptops and other electronic equipment. What is the name of this mineral? Bristol Zoo works with an organisation that rescues young gorillas and other primates that have been orphaned by the bushmeat trade in Cameroon. What is this organisation called?
