1 CLINICAL SPEAKER PROGRAM DEVIN CARR MSN, RN, CS, RRT, CCRN Devin Carr is the Assistant Manager of the Surgical Intensive Care Unit at Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he also chairs the Hospital Value Analysis Committee. Mr. Carr has over 18 years of healthcare experience and has held positions as a respiratory therapist, staff nurse, educator, manager, and consultant. He lectures frequently and has presented throughout the United States on a variety of critical care topics. Devin earned his Nursing degree at Middle Tennessee State University and his Master s degree in Nursing from Clarkson College in Omaha Nebraska where he was inducted into Sigma Theta Tau, the international honor society for nursing. Currently, he is a student in the doctoral program at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. Devin holds certifications in Adult Critical-Care Nursing and as a Clinical Specialist in Medical-Surgical Nursing.
2 CHARLES E. EDMISTON, JR. PhD, SM, CIC Dr. Charles Edmiston is a Professor of Surgery, Pathology and Otolaryngology & Hospital Epidemiologist at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. He is also the Director of the Surgical Microbiology Research Laboratory in the Department of Surgery at Froedtert Memorial Lutheran Hospital, the teaching affiliate of the Medical College of Wisconsin. He is a fellow of the Infectious Disease Society of American, Surgical Infection Society, and the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America. Dr. Edmiston completed his doctorate at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee and in 1984 joined the surgical faculty in Milwaukee to develop an infectious disease research program under the Chairmanship of Robert E. Condon, MD. Dr. Edmiston is the past Chairman ( ) of the General Hospital & Personal Use Device Panel of the Medical Devices Committee of the Food and Drug Administration. He is also a consultant to the FDA as an expert on the infectious disease implications of implantable biomedical devices. Dr. Edmiston is a peer-reviewer for numerous medical and surgical journals including the Journal of the American Medical Association, Journal of Infectious Diseases and Surgery. He is currently a member of the Editorial Boards of both Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology and the American Journal of Infection Control. Dr. Edmiston's major research interests include nosocomial risks in the operating room environment; biomedical-device associated infections; impact of selected risk factors for surgical site infections; perioperative antibiotic prophylaxis and the molecular epidemiology of surgical site infections. He is the author of over 150 original manuscripts, book chapters and monographs.
3 ROBERT GARCIA BS, MMT (ASCP), CIC (IPH, Bath, Oral Care, SSI) New York, New York Robert Garcia is Assistant Director of Infection Control at Brookdale University Hospital Medical Center, a MediSys Healthcare Institute in Brooklyn, NY. For 25 years, he has been an Infection Control Professional and a member of the Association for Professionals in Infection Control & Epidemiology (APIC). Robert was originally trained as a Microbiologist via the State University of New York at Stony Brook and the New York School of Medical Technology. He earned his BS in Community Health from St. Joseph s College and his MMT in Medical Technology from Hofstra University. He received his basic training in infection control from the Centers for Disease Control, and has been certified in Infection Control by CBIC since Infection Control projects directed by Mr. Garcia have resulted in cost savings totaling more than $5 million. A past president of APIC Chapter 38 (Long Island, NY), Robert is currently a task force member with the Greater New York Hospital Association, working on Central Line-Associated Bacteremia (CLAB) prevention initiatives. He is also a current or former member of APIC s Strategic Planning Board, Education Committee, Program Committee, CBIC, and a trainer for APIC s ICE II Clinical Course. Robert is a contributor to APIC s Text of Infection Control & Epidemiology, a reviewer for the 2005 HICPAC Guidelines on Isolation, and an Editorial Board Member for the International Journal of Infection Control, and AJIC, where he ranks among the top 25th percentile of reviewers. In the last three years, Robert has given more than 50 publication and media interviews regarding topics such as prevention and costs of HAI, and reducing occupational exposures. He served as co-editor of the February 2000 issue of the American Journal of Infection Control, an issue devoted to cost concerns in infection control. A frequent international speaker on such issues as prevention of VAP and CLAB, Robert s lectures have included presentations at national meetings of AACN, AORN, AVA, and the last seven APIC Education Conferences. His recent publications include A Review of the possible role of oral and dental colonization on the occurrence of health care-associated pneumonia: Underappreciated risk and a call for interventions, AJIC, 2005;33: In December 2005, Robert was named runner-up for the 2006 ICT Educator of the Year by Infection Control Today. Robert and his colleagues have been winners of five Blue Ribbon Awards for abstract presentations at APIC Educational Conference and International Meetings. Robert co-authored the study on Implementing HICPAC Guidelines to Reduce Central Line-Associated Bacteremia, for which the Infection Control Team won the 2004 Patient Safety Award from the New York State Department of Health. This project was selected by JCAHO for Best Practice in Infection Control and honorable mention for the J. Eisenberg Award from AHRQ in Robert was the 1999 winner of the APIC Urinary Tract Infection Research Award.
4 DR. MIKEL GRAY PhD, CUNP, CCCN, FAAN Mikel Gray is a Professor and Nurse Practitioner with the University of Virginia Department of Urology and School of Nursing. He is licensed as a family and pediatric nurse practitioner and holds additional certification as a urologic nurse practitioner. He is Editor-in Chief of the Journal of Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nursing and a Board Member of the Wound, Ostomy and Continence Society s Center for Clinical Investigation. He has authored or co-edited 3 books, and he has authored more than 57 chapters and 115 articles in peer reviewed journals. He has lectured both nationally and internationally on topics related to urologic nursing, wound, ostomy and continence nursing and evidence based practice. A fellow in the American Academy of Nursing, Dr. Gray is past president of both the Society of Urologic Nurses and Associates and Certification Board for Urologic Nurses and Associates. He has received awards for contributions to Urologic and WOC nursing respectively and was named as the NACF Continence care champion by WOCN in 2004.
5 JOAN JUNKIN MSN, APRN-CNS, CWOCN Joan is the Wound Ostomy Continence Nurse Coordinator at BryanLGH Medical Center in Lincoln, NE. She is currently the president of the Nebraska Affiliate of WOCN and a past chair and National Accreditation Committee member of the Wound Ostomy Continence Nurse Society. She has authored and co-authored several publications and presented an abstract at the Advances in Skin and Wound Care Conference in Las Vegas, October 23-26, She has consulted and set up a Skin & Wound Program in Fairbury, NE.
6 LEE ANN KRAPFL RN, BSN, CWOCN Lee Ann has functioned in the full-scope of wound, ostomy and continence care for 16 years. She is the certified wound, ostomy and continence nurse for Mercy Medical Center in Dubuque, IA, but also provides consultative services for home care and long term care settings. She has been a presenter at numerous local, state, regional and national conferences and has presented on a wide variety of clinical and public policy issues. She has most recently served as the Chair of the WOCN Public Policy Committee where she has worked to developed the organization's policy positions and provided regular comments to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Most notable is her involvement in the development of a guidance document on the upcoming regulations on inpatient prospective payment for acute inpatient hospitals. She is the 2008 recipient of the Nursing Organizations Alliance scholarship at the Nurse in Washington Internship
7 CLINICAL SPEAKER PROGRAM DR. MARYANNE McGUCKIN SCED., MT (ASCP) & CONSULTANT Dr. McGuckin is the founder and President of MMI which was established in She has had over thirty years of experience as a faculty and staff member of University of Pennsylvania. She is a Senior Scholar in Health Policy Department at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. In she was a visiting researcher at Oxford University, UK and in 2002 a faculty exchange professor at Katholiecke University, Leuven, Belgium. Dr. McGuckin s specialty is infection control and hospital epidemiology. Dr. McGuckin created the Partners In Your Care program, a hand-hygiene program which combines monitoring and patient empowerment and is used in several hundred hospitals. Dr. McGuckin served on the 2002 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) task force that developed Hand Hygiene Guidelines for Healthcare Workers and currently is a member of the WHO task force on developing a global patient empowerment model. Dr. McGuckin is highly regarded in the medical field and has been a featured speaker at numerous medical seminars and scientific meetings such as the CDC, Joint Commission, Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC), Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA). An accomplished author of countless original and peer-reviewed articles, Dr. McGuckin s work has appeared in such publications as the American Journal of Infection Control, American Journal of Medical Technology, JAMA, The New England Journal of Medicine, Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology, The American Journal of Infection Control and Epidemiology, The American Journal of Surgery and The Journal of Urology. Dr. McGuckin is an expert source for national print and broadcast media including The New York Times, The Washington Post, Dateline, 60 Minutes, and MSNBC News. Dr. McGuckin is an alumni of the University of Pennsylvania.
8 TINA MEYERS RN, COCN, CWCN, CCCN, ACHRN Tina Meyers is a WOC nurse program director at Harris County Medical Center in Houston, Texas. She provides clinical assessment and develops care plans for patients with wound, ostomy and continence needs. Tina also has developed a WOC service program which includes an outpatient ostomy care center, educational consulting and assessment services. Prior to her position as coordinator at Conroe Regional Medical Center, Ms Meyers worked as a Hyperbaric Nurse performing case management and diabetes educator for both in and outpatient settings. Ms. Meyers received her BSN from Prairie View A&M University and in 2002 completed the Wound, Ostomy and Continence program through MD Anderson in Houston. She is currently working on her MBA at Texas Women s University. She is a member of the WOC Nursing Society, Texas Nursing Association, Who s Who for Professionals and the NPUAP Society. Among her 5 clinical poster presentations, her abstract entitled Education at your Fingertips was just accepted at SAWC. She has also given 23 oral presentations throughout Texas on Wounds and Ostomy care, and most recently gave a poster presentation for Successful Prevention of Heel Ulcers and Plantar Flexion Contracture in the High-Risk Ventilated Patient Population at IHI in December, When away from the hospital, Tina is a Texas Rangers fan, and a mom of two children: a girl and a boy who is destined to be a pitcher for the MLB. She and her husband Kenny have been married XX years own horses on a ranch and dreams one day of winning the title of Mrs. America.
9 LINDA O'CONNOR MSN, RNC, APRN-BC (IPH, Oral Care) Carle Place, New York Linda is the Eldercare Course Coordinator for the Undergraduate program at the New York University College of Nursing and President of JA Consulting Services, Inc. For the past 14 years, Linda has worked with the geriatric population and written several articles, book chapters and has spoken nationally and internationally on various geriatric topics. Linda received her BSN from Boston College School of Nursing and her MSN from Hunter-Bellevue School of Nursing. Linda is currently completing her PhD at NYU College of Nursing. She holds ANCC certification as a gerontological nurse, ANCC certification as a Geriatric Clinical Nurse Specialist and is certified through HPNA as a Hospice and Palliative Care Educator.
10 JAN POWERS PhD, RN, MSN, CCRN, CCNS, CNRN, CWCN Jan Powers is the Director of Clinical Nurse Specialist and the Critical Care Clinical Nurse Specialist at St. Vincent Indianapolis, IN, Hospital. Powers is a PhD candidate at the Indiana University School of Nursing in Indianapolis. She received her Bachelor of Science and Masters Degrees at IU as well. She is Adjunct Faculty at the Indiana University School of Nursing and the Purdue University School of Nursing. She serves on the Editorial Board for Nursing Made Incredibly Easy, and is a Manuscript Reviewer for the American Journal of Critical Care Nursing, Journal of Advanced Emergency Nursing, Advanced Issues in Critical Care, RN and LPN. She has also served as a Part-time Faculty and a Research Assistant at the IU School of Nursing. Powers was recently inducted as a Fellow of Critical Care Medicine in the American College of Critical Care Medicine. She has received the 2005 Mentoring Excellence Award from the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN). She also received the 2003 Excellence in Advanced Practice Nursing Award from the American Association of Neuroscience Nurses, the 2000 and 2003 Outstanding Clinical Nurse Specialist Circle of Excellence Award from the AACN and the 2003 Clinical Excellence Award from the Indiana University School of Nursing Alumni Association. She has received Gold Awards for Clinical Excellence and Research from Clarian Health Partners in 2000, 2001 and Powers has presented in four countries and more than 25 states giving more than 100 presentations in the past five years and she has been published nearly 20 times in that same period. She has also conducted research in the critical care setting and has been primary investigator for eight clinical studies. She is currently on the AACN National Nominating Committee and has served on the National Research Work Group and Advanced Practice Work Group for AACN. She also serves on the Society of Critical Care Medicine Design Task Force, and the Nominating Committee for the National Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists (NACNS). She is currently President of the Central Indiana Chapter of AACN and the Chairperson for the Central Indiana Affiliate of NACNS She has received certifications as a Certified Critical Care Registered Nurse (CCRN), Certified Neuroscience Registered Nurse (CNRN), a Certified Critical Care Clinical Nurse Specialist (CCNS), a Certified Wound Care Nurse (CWCN). She is also a member of Sigma Theta Tau International and is a Fundamental Critical Care Support Instructor.
11 MARCIA RYDER PhD, MS, RN Marcia Ryder s extensive experience in nursing includes positions as Clinical Director of a Special Care Unit and a Cardiovascular/Thoracic Unit, Clinical Nurse Specialist in Nutrition Support, and Director of Nursing in Home Infusion. Dr. Ryder received her nursing diploma from the Western Pennsylvania Hospital School of Nursing in Pittsburgh, Pa. and her Bachelor s, Master s, and Doctoral degrees from the University of California, San Francisco. Her dissertation research investigated the effect of pulsed electrical fields on biofilm bacteria. After many years as an independent consultant, researcher and educator, Dr. Ryder is currently the Research Coordinator of the USC Center for Medical Biofilm Research at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, CA. She is a nationally recognized expert in the use and management of vascular access devices; served as president of the Association for Vascular Access (AVA) and now serves as chair-elect of APIC s Research Foundation s Scientific Research Council and member of the Editorial Advisory Board for APIC s publication Prevention Strategist. Dr. Ryder was honored last year as the recipient of the 2007 Educator of the Year awarded by Infection Control Today.
12 MARY LOU SOLE PHD, RN, CCNS, FAAN Dr. Sole is a Professor at the University of Central Florida School of Nursing in Orlando, Florida. She also works per diem as a Clinical Nurse Scientist at Orlando Regional Medical Center. Dr. Sole received her diploma in nursing from the Ohio Valley General Hospital School of Nursing, a BSN from Ohio University, an MS in nursing from The Ohio State University, and her PhD in nursing from The University of Texas at Austin. She has extensive experience in critical care as a staff nurse, clinical nurse specialist, educator, and researcher. She has authored over 45 peer-reviewed publications, is an editor of Introduction to Critical Care Nursing published by W.B. Saunders, and serves on the editorial board or reviewer for several nursing journals. Her primary research focus is on airway management to prevent pneumonia in critically-ill patients. Her secondary research is application and evaluation of technology in education and practice. She is active in professional organizations, including the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses and Sigma Theta Tau. She has received many honors for teaching, research, administration, and clinical practice, and is a fellow in the American Academy of Nursing.
13 KATHLEEN VOLLMAN MSN, RN, CCNS, CCRN, FCCM Kathleen is a Critical Care Clinical Nurse Specialist, Educator and Consultant. Ms. Vollman has published and lectured throughout the United States and overseas on a variety of pulmonary, critical care and professional nursing topics. She earned her Nursing degree from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan and her Master s in Critical Care Nursing from California State University in Long Beach. For the past 13 years, she functioned in the role of Clinical Nurse Specialist for the Medical Critical Care Area at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit Michigan. Currently her company, ADVANCING NURSING, is focused on creating empowered work environments for nurses through the acquisition of greater skills and knowledge. Kathleen received the Florence Nightingale award for Clinical Practice in In addition, she designed & developed the Vollman Prone Positioner, which is available worldwide.
