4 PROGRAM OBJECTIVE To educate stroke healthcare professionals on current research findings and clinical standards of stroke management and treatment. Provide an opportunity for general discussion and collaboration regarding state stroke care initiatives. LEARNING OBJECTIVES At the completion of this program, the learner will be able to: Discuss the performance measures that will be the focus of improvement initiatives undertaken as part of the Coverdell Program. Describe how a clinical collaborative can provide assistance to doctor s offices in improving cardiac quality of care metrics. Explain the application and utility of the Brooklyn Pre-Hospital Stroke Scale. List two potential roles of imaging in patients for acute stroke therapy. Delineate common signs and symptoms of the unusual stroke presentation and best practices for treatment. List three impediments to expedient diagnosis of stroke. Define three practical approaches to reducing inappropriate stroke code activation or non activation for appropriate cases from triage. Discuss two Clinical implications of the LEAPS results to improve mobility and reduce falls post stroke. Describe the components of Comprehensive Stroke Center certification. Explain the steps required to establish a new stroke coordinators group. Provide an example of the importance of hospital and EMS collaboration for improved quality stroke outcomes. Recognize the importance of collaboration with other stroke coordinators in improving stroke systems of care. Describe one challenge and one opportunity associated with the provision of high quality acute neurovascular nursing education. TARGET AUDIENCE Physicians (Neurologists, Emergency Department Physicians, Hospitalists, Internists, Medical Directors), Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, Physician s Assistants, Emergency Department Managers and Stroke Team Coordinators CERTIFICATION Continuing Medical Education Accreditation - Physicians This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education through the joint sponsorship of the American Heart Association and the New York State Department of Health. The American Heart Association is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians. The American Heart Association designates this live activity for a maximum of 7.25 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. All persons who develop and/or control educational content in CME/CE activities sponsored by the American Heart Association will disclose to the audience all financial relationships with any commercial supporters of this activity as well as with other commercial interests whose lines of business are related to the CME/CE-certified content of this activity. In addition, presenters will disclose unlabeled/unapproved uses of drugs or devices discussed in their presentations. Such disclosures will be made in writing in course presentation materials. Continuing Medical Education Accreditation Physician Assistants AAPA accepts certificates of participation for educational activities certified for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit from organizations accredited by ACCME or a recognized state medical society. Physician assistants may receive a maximum of 7.25 hours of Category I credit for completing this program. Continuing Education Accreditation - Nurses The American Heart Association is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center s Commission on Accreditation. The maximum number of hours awarded for this CE activity is 7.25 contact hours. Accredited status does not imply endorsement by the American Heart Association or the American Nurses Credentialing Center of any commercial products displayed in conjunction with an activity. Steps for Successful Completion To successfully complete this activity, learners must fully participate in the sessions. In addition, learners must provide feedback that will be used for evaluative and outcomes measurement purposes. Learners will check-in onsite for attendance verification purposes and will be required to provide evaluative feedback before CME/CE credit can be claimed.
