2 Welcome to the Reception classrooms Matisse Class! Hepworth Class!
3 These are the Reception class teachers! Matisse Class! Hepworth Class! Miss Paetz Ms Martin Foundation Stage Leader Miss Brown
4 You will arrive in the morning and line up with your class in the playground. The school gates open at 8:45. Everyone lines up with their class at 8:55. Hepworth Class line up at the red gate. Matisse Class line up outside their classroom. We wear our school uniform and bring our book bags to school everyday! The school uniform shop is located on Broadway market. Book bags are available from the school office and cost 5. Note: Teachers will come out to greet the children from 8.55am. Parents/carers work towards saying goodbye at the gate.
5 What s inside Reception? Would you like to play in the construction area or use the technology area? The construction area is where we can build and make things. The technology area has a variety things for us to use (ipads, beebots, CD players)
6 What s inside Reception? We like to make things in our creative area, especially junk models! The mark-making area is a great place for you to show off your writing and drawing in Reception! What would you like to make in the creative area? The investigation area is always full of some interesting things too!
7 What s inside Reception? What is your favourite story? This is our home corner ; we like role play with our friends! In the reading area we like to read and retell stories to each other.
8 What s inside Reception? Would you like to work in the maths area or play in the small world? It s always fun making up stories in the small world! The maths area is a great place for us to show off our number skills!
9 Welcome to our outdoor area! Which activity would you like to do? We are building traps in the construction area! We are building and getting creative with our outdoor tree. We are learning about capacity in the water tray. Note: The outside area is an extension of our classroom. The children take part in outside focus activities with adults on a daily basis all year round.

11 We sit at the snack table when we want a drink or a snack. There are always lots delicious fruits to eat and water to drink. This is available all the time in Reception. What is your favourite fruit? Note: Please don t give children snacks to bring to school as it can cause confusion at lunch time or impromptu picnicking!
12 Going to the toilet In Reception we have our very own toilets that are easy to find and use! You can go to the toilet whenever to need to, just remember to let an adult know. Can you say Please can I go to the toilet? Get some toilet roll before you go into the toilet! Flush the toilet Remember to wash your hands! Note: Children must be able to use the toilet independently. Children should bring in a labelled PE kit to change in to if they have an accident.
13 This is how we learn to read and write We are learning a new sound. We are reading words! We are reading red words. We use the RWI phonics programme. We write in our phonics books everyday. We are reading a book with our partners! Note: Children work in small groups at a pace that suits each child. RWI phonics cards are available to purchase from the school office.
14 This is what we do during maths lessons What number house do you live in? What number bus do you get on? We are learning to count objects and match them to their numbers. We are learning to add using the Numicon. We are learning about symmetry. What shapes do you know? Parents can go to to find out more about numicon! We are learning about 3D shapes.
15 We listen to a new book of the week every week! These are the books we read during our Animals and Growing topic. Do you know any of these stories? Note: Make sure you read at home with your child every night.
16 This is what we do during literacy lessons We are learning to make up our own stories just by looking at a picture. We read a new book every week during literacy. Then we practice what we have learnt by working with the teacher. We are learning how to retell a familiar story using puppets and props, We are learning to use our phonics to help us write words and sentences. Note: Literacy lessons teach children to become confident speakers, listeners, readers and writers. What is your favourite book character?
17 We have a different topic every half term These are our topics over the year: Ourselves Celebrations Clothing and Materials Time and Patterns Animals and Growing Around the World What topic would you like to learn about? Note: Please let the teachers know if you can help with any of these topics. Parents often come in to share their knowledge with the children.
18 This is what we do during topic lessons During topic lessons children take part in creative lessons and lessons that develop their understanding of the world. We learn to make a junk model! We design and make our own t-shirts! What junk model would you like to make? We learn about music and rhythm! We learn how to use the computers!
19 Trips and visitors Throughout the year we go on lots of trips! Here are just a few We visit Hackney Library every term. We explore London Fields Park every term too! We visit Hackney City Farm in Summer 1. In Spring 2 we visit the Science Museum!
20 We eat our lunch in the dinner hall. What do you like eating for lunch? Some children have school dinners. Reception class teachers stay in the lunch hall to help children with their lunch and to make sure everyone is having a nice time. Some children have a packed lunch. Note: Adults ensure that the children are eating an adequate amount at lunch time. The class teacher will let you know if there are any problems. Please let the office know if your child cannot eat a particular food. The school dinner menu is on the website.
21 In the playground If you hurt yourself there is always an adult at first aid to help. Which activity would you like to do? There are water fountains in both playgrounds. There are always lots of different activities to do outside on the playground, including football, basketball, hula hoops, skipping ropes, drawing, and construction. Note: Adults are stationed on the various activities to ensure that everyone is safe and engaged.
22 We love Reception and so will you!
23 Here are some tips to get off to a great start. 1. EARLY TO BED... An early bedtime of around 7.30 will really help your child to be alert at school, get to school on time and not be overtired with all the new experiences. 2. INDEPENDENCE. Make sure your child helps with their getting dressed and undressed. Your child will need to put a coat on so practice doing this at home. You can even start trying buttons and zips. Shoe buckles can be tricky so velcro straps are a good idea. 3. TOILETTING Your child will have to go to the toilet without any help, so send them to school with a good routine in place - "wipe front to back, flush, wash hands" 4. LABEL EVERYTHING Make sure all items of clothing have your child's name on them. 5. LEARNING AT HOME Read to, talk with and go outdoors with your child every day. There are also lots of ideas on how to help at home on our school website. 6. HELP TO MAKE FRIENDS. Nursery class spends time teaching children how to make friends and respect each other. Talk about making new friends at home - how to ask 'can I play with you' and 'do you want to play with me'. 7. ALWAYS READ THE NEWSLETTER On Fridays the school newsletter is handed out. There are lots of contributions from students but you will also find information about school trips, holiday dates, inset days and non-uniform days. 8. ASK FOR HELP - You can easily arrange informal meetings with the class teacher to talk about how your child is getting on or any worries you may have. 9. WEBSITE This is full of useful information so please check it regularly 10. S We try to keep paper contact to a minimum. Please check your s regularly to see if you have any from school. Like wise this is a great way to keep in touch with us.
