SINGER Personalized Tablet Case Embroider a personalized tablet case for your favorite techie! While making this project with your SINGER FUTURA sewing & embroidery machine, you will learn to use many features of the lettering function, including working with lettering frames, resizing and advanced spacing. The finished size of the tablet case is approximately 8½ x 11. Shopping List: ½ yard pleather ½ yard fabric for outside of case ½ yard lining ¼ yard low-loft fusible batting 9 zipper (plastic, not metal) SINGER style 2000 chromium needle, size 14 All-purpose thread Machine embroidery thread Bobbinfil Temporary fabric spray adhesive Medium weight cut-away stabilizer Rotary cutter, mat & ruler Hand sewing needle
Fabric Preparation: 1. Pleather Cut a piece measuring 11 x 15. Cut a piece of cut-away stabilizer the same size as the pleather. Spray the stabilizer with the temporary spray adhesive. Apply the stabilizer to the wrong side of pleather. Place the pleather and the stabilizer in the hoop. Note: The embroidered fabric is going to be cut smaller than the hoop when the embroidery is finished, so it doesn t matter if the hoop leaves marks in the fabric. Main Fabric Cut one 3½ x 9½ (Right front) Cut one 7 x 9½ (Left front) Cut one 12 x 9½ (Back) Cut two 1½ x 2 (Zipper tabs) Lining Fabric Cut two 9½ x 12 Batting Cut two 8½ x 10½ Tip: Sometimes the hoop can leave burn marks in the pleather, which can ruin your piece. You should do a test first, by placing a scrap of pleather in the hoop. If marks are left when the hoop is removed, you will need to place the stabilizer into the hoop by itself, and then spray with the spray adhesive. Position the fabric on top of the stabilizer and press in place with your hand to secure. At the Computer: 2. Open the Futura Software and click on the Lettering icon on the main tool bar. A Lettering tool bar appears. The text box on the left is where you will type in the name you will embroider on your tablet case. Type the letters in the text box. Notice as you type, the letters appear in ghost form in the hoop on your screen. The letters may be manipulated in many ways while in ghost form. Type name in text box. Select desired font Frames menu 2
3. Select the Font style you desire. Click on the arrow in the Font box and select the desired font. For this project, the Times Large font was used. 4. To select the frame style, click on the Frames icon. When the frame selection appears, choose the Vertical Frame (see below). Vertical Frame 5. When the letters first appear on the screen, they may seem to be stacked too close together. You may change the size of the space between the letters in the Advanced Spacing menu. Right click and select Advanced Spacing. A sub-menu appears. You may set the spacing between letters individually or all the letters at once. Click in the box next to the first letter, and the space will highlight in blue; type in.25. Select Apply to all to set the same distance between all of the letters, then click OK. Right click and select Stitch it! The letters now appear in the screen filled with stitches. 6. To center the design, select the Design menu from the main tool bar. Click on Center Design. 3
7. The name needs to be sized to fit in the band of the tablet cover, so you will need to measure the size of the text. The Futura software has a built-in ruler that you can use to measure the length of the name. Click on the Ruler icon. Bring the cursor down into the hoop area, notice that the cursor now looks like a tiny ruler. Click at the very top of the first letter, and then drag the cursor to the bottom of the last letter. Bring cursor down into the hoop area, click at the very top of the first letter, then drag the cursor to the bottom of the last letter. An information bar at the bottom of the screen will show the distance. TIP: You can change the unit of measure by going to the System Parameters menu under Tools. You have the choice to use English System or Metric System. An information bar at the bottom of the screen will show the length of the name. The length needs to be between 6 to 6½ inches to fit properly on the band. If it is longer or shorter than 6 to 6½ inches you will need to adjust the size of the name. 8. To change the size of the name, first click on the Lettering icon to exit from the Lettering function. Click on Design, and then click on Change Size. The Transform Design menu appears. To keep the ratio of width and height the same when resizing, click in the box next to the % symbol. The value in the X: box changes to 100, which refers to 100% of the original size of the design. Type a new size in the X: box. The new size will be a percentage of the original size. If you need to make the design smaller, type in a value less than 100, if you need to make the size larger, type in a value more than 100. Let s say that you want the design to be 75% smaller, type in 75. The size of the design will decrease to 75% of the original size and will retain the same ratio of width to height. Click OK when you ve typed in the new size. At this point you will want to re-measure the design to see if you need to make further adjustments. After you ve finished adjusting the size of the name, you are ready to embroider. 4
Embroidery: 9. To prepare the machine for embroidery, thread the top of the machine with the embroidery thread and bobbinfil in the bobbin. Attach the embroidery foot and the embroidery arm. Place the prepared hoop and fabric to the embroidery arm. 10. Sending the Design to the Machine as follows: Select the Transmit to machine icon on the tool bar. In the Machine Navigator, click on Send design to send the embroidery data to the machine. Once the design data has been sent to the machine, embroider the design. When the design is finished embroidering, remove the fabric from the hoop. Trim the stabilizer around the design. 11. Using a rotary cutter, mat and ruler, trim the fabric to 3½ x 9½, centering the name within the fabric piece. 3½ TIP: Use a SINGER Style 2000 chromium needle, size 14, to get a crisplooking design with minimally visible perforations. The most commonly used and easily found faux leather is called Pleather. Pleather is actually a combination of the words 'leather' and 'plastic.' Pleather usually has a knit backing, and is strong, so it can handle a wide range of designs. It's too thick to pucker, but can be a bit stretchy, however, so a cutaway stabilizer is recommended. Very large or heavy designs may cause a subtle warping of the fabric. You will have better results embroidering designs with open areas. Always test hoop the pleather to see if it will leave hoop marks when the hoop is removed. If this is the case, hoop the stabilizer by itself and then adhere the pleather onto the stabilizer with a temporary fabric spray adhesive. 9 ½ 5
Sewing Directions: 12. To prepare the machine for regular sewing, remove the embroidery unit from the machine. Remove the Embroidery Foot, then attach the General Purpose Foot and regular foot shank. Thread the top of the machine and the bobbin with all-purpose thread. Select the straight stitch. 13. With right sides together, pin tablet case left front piece to the left edge of the embroidered band. Sew using a ½ seam allowance. Seam allowances are ½ unless otherwise indicated. Press seam away from the band, using a press cloth. TIP: Some pleather fabrics are heat sensitive. Be careful not to touch the iron to pleather as it could damage the fabric. Use a press cloth when pressing. 14. With right sides together, pin tablet case right front piece to the right edge of the embroidered band. Stitch seam. Press seam away from the band. Topstitch close to the seam lines. Topstitch close to seam lines. 6
15. You are now ready to prepare the right edge of the tablet case for the zipper insertion. Mark fabric on the wrong side using a water soluble fabric marker. First, mark a line ½ in from the edges and 1 down the sides. Then, mark another line parallel to and ½ from the top edges. ½ ½ 1 Right edge of tablet case 1 WRONG SIDE OF FABRIC (Diagram shows only a portion of the piece, and is without design details) Mark a line ½ from top edge 16. Apply batting to the wrong side of both the tablet case front and back, following manufacturer s instructions. The batting is slightly smaller (about ½ smaller on 3 sides and 1 smaller on the right edge) so position the batting as shown. Batting is ½ smaller on left edge, and sides. Batting 1 smaller on right edge 7
17. With right sides together, pin the right edge of a lining piece to the right edge of the tablet case front. Stitch on the line in the direction shown. Start sewing here; continue sewing in the direction of the red arrows. WRONG SIDE OF FABRIC (Diagram shows only a portion of the piece, and is without design details) 18. Clip to the stitching in the corners, being careful not to cut stitching. Trim seams and turn to the right side out. Press. 9 19. Prepare the zipper as follows: Step 1 Fold under ¼ on the top and bottom edges of one of the tab pieces, then press. Unfold. Step 2 Unzip the zipper a few inches, then hand-sew the zipper ends together above the tops. Step 3 With right sides together, position the zipper onto the tab so one of the folds is just above the top zipper stop. Stitch ¼ seam. Step 4 Fold up the tab. Step 5 Fold in ¼ on each side of tab. Step 6 Fold tab in half, enclosing the ends of the zipper tape. Stitch close to the folded edge. Repeat this process with the remaining tab and the other end of the zipper. Zipper Preparation Step 1 Step 2 Step 3 Step 4 Step 5 Step 6 Finished Zipper 20. Pin the right edge of the tablet case front, close to the left edge of the zipper teeth. Using a Zipper foot, stitch close to the edge. 9
21. Pin the left edge of the tablet case back, close to the right edge of the zipper teeth. Stitch close to the edge. 22. Open the zipper. With right sides together, pin the tablet back to the tablet front, and the lining back to the lining front. Stitch around the edges, leaving an opening in the end of the lining for turning, and tucking zipper ends in. Be careful not to catch the zipper ends into the seam when sewing. Stitch around the edges, leaving an opening for turning Lining TIP: If you are finding it difficult to stitch around the zipper ends, try using the zipper foot to navigate around it more easily. 23. Pull the fabric through the opening to turn to the right side out. Slip stitch opening closed with a hand-sewing needle. Push the lining inside.
