SIZING CHART These days we take sizing for granted. However this wasn't always the case. It used to be that every time you wanted a set of clothes made, you had to go and get measured. As industrialisation developed in the 19th century, it was discovered that there were standard alogritms for determining clothing sizes. Because of this, most people only know their general clothing size, which makes getting more specific measurements difficult. When someone wants clothes that fit them better than the standard items on the shelf they must go to a tailor. The monks at the Comunidad de San Adai make a number of hand tailored religious garments and understand the need not only for precise measurements, but also for a chart that is capable of aiding people in measuring themselves, and a method of standardisation of these measurements. This sizing chart is offered as a courtesy to help the public determine how best to notate these measurements and communicate them faithfully to their tailor. Different people and places use different measurement systems. When communicating with your tailor, please remember to specify whether you are measuring in inches or centimetres. If using inches, it is best to measure to the half inch, since this is smaller and therefore more precise. MEASURING To begin, put on any garments you plan to wear underneath the garment you are ordering, as this will assure the best possible fit. One way that you can assure a good fit is to find a dress shirt you already have that fits you well. If you have one, then you can write down the measurements in the shirt s size tag, which usually include the Neck Circumference (NC), which is generally between cm ( inches); and Sleeve Length (SL) which is generally between cm (32-36 inches).
COLLAR LENGTH (CL) If you have a comfortable shirt, you can check the collar size, which is generally between cm ( inches); otherwise, wrap the measuring tape around the centre of the neck at the Adam's Apple, place two fingers between the neck and the measuring tape CHEST SIZE (CS) Wrap the measuring tape around the widest part of the chest. Inhale to fill the lungs, and ensure that the tape is both taught and level. WAIST SIZE (WS) Wrap the measuring tape around the narrowest part of the waist. Ensure the tape is kept level, let out your belly to it s most relaxed position, and make the tape taught but do not over tighten it, this will assure that the buttons on the front of your garment will continue to fit, even if you gain a little weight. SHOULDER WIDTH (SW) Find the spot where the shoulder meets the arm, where the seam of the sleeve would normally be. Measure from this point to the same point on the opposite shoulder, allowing the tape to arch up slightly towards the base of the neck.
HIPS (HS) Empty your pockets! Wrap the measuring tape around the widest part of the hips - this is usually around the buttocks, below the beltline. Ensure the tape is kept level, make sure the tape is kept taught but do not over tighten it. SLEEVE LENGTH (SL) Measuring sleeve length properly will prevent the cuffs of your garments from riding up on your wrists when you move your arms. To determine the proper sleeve length, bend the arm to a ninety degree angle and measure from the center of the back of your neck to the wrist of your longer arm. VEST LENGTH (VL) Measure from the centre of the back of the neck to the point where the collar meets the shirt, and then straight down the spine to the point where you want the shirt to end, which is normally just the below the buttocks. Make sure that the tape stays flush along the contours of the back. HEAD CIRCUMFERENCE (HC) Measure at the level of the forehead, making sure that the tape remains level at the top of the ears. If you would rather just convert your hat size, from a comfortable hat that you already have you can do so using the following chart: Hat Size Inches Centimetres 6 ¾ 21 ¼ 54 6 ⅞ 21 ⅝ ⅛ 22 ⅜ ¼ 22 ¾ ⅜ 23 ⅛ ½ 23 ½ ⅝ 23 ⅞ ¾ 24 ¼ ⅞ 24 ⅝
INSEAM (IS) To measure the inseam, put one end of the tape at the highest possible comfortable place in the crotch and measure down the inside of the leg to the point on the inner ankle where the end ofwellfilling pants would lay. THIGH CIRCUMFERENCE (TC) Measure around the largest part of the thigh to determine it s circumference. BACK LENGTH( BL) Measure the centre of the base of the neck to the back of the ankles. WRIST CIRCUMFERENCE (WC) Measure around the arm at the smallest point of the wrist. BACK WIDTH (BW) Width of shoulder blade. Measure the width of the at the shoulderblade, where the base of one armpit connects to the other. PELVIC SIZE (PS) Measure from the point of the waistline in the front to the waistline in the back.
INFORMATION FOR TAILORS In order to assure that the sizes transmitted to you by the customer are correct, it is a good idea to compare them with the following standardized measurements. Keep in mind that people come in many shapes and sizes, but if you find that a measurement is different from those below by more than one half inch (or one centimetre), it may be a good idea to contact the client and confirm the measurement was performed correctly before cutting the fabric.
