1 Blaenau Gwent Funding Opportunities August 2014 Welcome to the GAVO Blaenau Gwent funding opportunities newsletter, I will be sending this out on a regular basis with relevant funding opportunities that may suit your organisation. If you think that it is relevant to you and would like further help, please contact me on mandy.moore@gavowales.org.uk or huw.lewis@gavowales.org.uk This year, Monmouthshire Building Society, one of Wales' largest and most successful financial institutions, hits a major financial milestone - one billion pounds in assets. To mark this momentous occasion, they will be giving back to the wider local community through some unique and exciting funding projects. For the first stage of the celebrations, the Society has launched the Community Acorn Fund to give back to community groups and projects throughout the local geographical area. A 25,000 funding pool has been allocated across the Society's branch and agency network, and local community groups are invited to apply for funding. To coincide with the launch of the Community Acorn Fund, the Society has launched a dedicated website, which can be found at and provides full information and guidance on how to apply. Application forms are available from the website, and from any Monmouthshire Building Society branch or agency office throughout South Wales and the West. A map showing the location of branches is available on the above website. The deadline for applications to be received is 30 September 2014.

2 The Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust has launched its new grant programmes. Applications are now being welcomed under the following priority areas: Peace and Security to support a transition towards: The use of 'soft', rather than 'hard' power as a first line of response to conflict within society and around the world. The de-legitimisation of violence as a tool for responding to conflict, securing interests or projecting power. A culture of human rights and non-violent problem-solving, promoted at all levels of society. Power and Accountability - to support people to create a world in which power is more equally shared, and in which powerful institutions are responsive and accountable to wider society and aligned with the longterm public interest. Rights and Justice - to promote racial justice and equality of opportunity as a basis for a harmonious multi-racial, multi-ethnic society in the UK. Sustainable Future - to develop and promote sustainable, low-carbon alternatives to the current consumerist and growth-based paradigm. The grant should have a good chance of making a difference. Grants are made to a range of organisations. It is not necessary to be a registered charity to apply to the Trust, however, the Trust can only support work which is legally charitable as defined in UK law. Applications for the Peace and Security and Power and Accountability Programmes are being accepted with a deadline of 1 September 2014 (12 noon). 3 People & Places Funding capital and revenue projects that encourage coordinated action by people who want to make their communities better places to live Area: Wales Organisation Type: Voluntary or community organisation Funding Size: 5,001-1,000,000 People's Postcode Trust - Small Grants Programme Open to Applications from Scotland, Wales and South of England The third round of The People's Postcode Trust Small Grants Programme is now open to applications from Scotland, Wales and the South of England (excluding Greater London). Registered charities, SCIOs, constituted voluntary and community groups, social enterprises, community interest companies (CIC), not-for-profit organisations and sports clubs are eligible to apply. Grants range from 500 to 20,000 for organisations in Scotland and England and up to 5,000 for those in Wales. All projects should provide assistance in one or more of the Trust's following fields of operation: The Trust has announced a key change for this quarter. Because of an increasing demand for funding, the Trust will only accept applications for projects that advance citizenship or community development. Advancing community development involves creating opportunities for the community to learn new skills and, by enabling people to act together, helps further social inclusion and equality. Funding is available for projects of up to 12 months in length (6 months in Wales) that positively impact their local community. Projects that are creative, far-reaching and will leave a long-term impact once completed stand the best chance of being successful. The deadline for applications is 22 August 2014.

4 Community Facilities Programme a grant scheme for community led capital improvement projects Aims The Community Facilities Programme is a capital grant fund which aims to develop and improve community facilities which in turn provide services that communities need in order to tackle poverty and its effects. The Programme will be open to projects throughout Wales. Applications will need to demonstrate that the facility to be improved is: Needed and used by the community and offering services not duplicated in the surrounding area; Providing services which prevent or mitigate poverty and its effects; Reintroducing or preventing the loss of community services; Supported by and developed along with the local community; Strategic and can demonstrate this by evidencing it has the support of the local authority, local County Voluntary Council, Local Health Board or similar partner; and Sustainable over the medium to long term. Eligibility The Programme is community based, and will be open to community and voluntary sector organisations, including social enterprises. The focus of the programme will be on increasing opportunity and tackling poverty. The Welsh Government recognises that in order to do this we need to improve the health and wellbeing; opportunities for lifelong learning; and economic prospects of the individual members of our most vulnerable communities. Capital grants will typically be available to a maximum of 500,000. For exceptional projects that can also demonstrate difficulties in attracting funding from other sources, this maximum could be exceeded. Grants will be available for capital works to provide or improve community facilities which are preventing or tackling poverty Applications The Community Facilities Programme will be a rolling grant programme which means that applications can be submitted at any time; there will be no formal funding rounds. Applications must be able to demonstrate that the facility is sustainable and so must be accompanied by a business plan and supported by annual accounts where available. 5 The Edge Fund is currently accepting applications from communities, campaign groups and activists in the UK that are working for social, economic and environmental justice and have not been able to find funding from other sources. Priority will be given to grassroots or underfunded groups. Groups should be: Facing discrimination and injustice because of their class, ability, gender, race, nationality, religion, sexual orientation, or other factors - those who are actively working to challenge these injustices and to create just and healthy communities; working for systematic change - those who seek to replace the structures and processes that create oppression, inequality and environmental destruction. Grants are not likely to be for more than 5,000. Grants of up to 1,000 are also available to individuals who face challenges because of their personal circumstances or background and have a real passion for justice and can demonstrate a clear commitment to taking action. The deadline for applications is 8 September 2014 (5.00pm). 6 WCVA supporting scheme to help rural communities set up social enterprises. Over 1.4 million of Big Lottery Funding has been earmarked to develop a learning campaign to inspire rural communities to set up social enterprises. Based on the Village SOS programme, the new funding will see the launch of the Village SOS Learning, Outreach and Engagement Campaign led by Action with Communities in Rural England ( ACRE ), who will work with a nationwide partnership of organisations, including WCVA. The campaign provides an educational network for rural communities, enabling them to start sustainable social enterprises such as setting up shops or opening cinemas. Through a central hub, new enterprises will be matched with a trained mentor and local grassroots support organisation to offer support and advice - in Wales, this will be WCVA. The campaign will also feature a community to community learning network, where volunteers from social enterprises around the UK will become mentors to other organisations More details can be found on :

7 The 2015 grant programme has opened to applicants. Grants of between 500 and 25,000 are available for UK charities and support groups that support children and families with genetic disorders. Funding is available for projects that can satisfy the following critera: The project must benefit children ( 18 years or under ) affected by genetic disorders. The proposed project is of one year's duration or less. The proposed project will take place in the UK and/or will benefit UK families. The project's activities are tangible and identifiable. The size of the Jeans for Genes grant can make an acknowledgeable impact on the project. The charity or support group has a child protection policy in place ( if applicable ). The deadline for the 2015 grant programme is 30 September The guidelines and application form are available from the website.

8 Community Chest Fancy 1500 towards your community sport project? Community Chest offers grant of up to 1500 in any 12 month period for activities that: Encourage more people to become more active, more often Raises the standards of existing activities Please note, applicants are able to claim a second 1500 if their application is based on one of the 2 priority areas. To be eligible they must demonstrate that their application either: Better prepares clubs to cater for interest generated via 2012; or Tackles inequality - BME, disability ( inclusion ), women and girls, social inclusion. Who can apply? The scheme is open to any group as long as they hold a bank account in the organsiation's name. How to apply? Community Chest is run partnership with the 22 local authorities in Wales so you need to download an application form and submit it to your local authority contact.

9 Comic Relief Local Communities Communities, Culture, Educating & Young People, Health Clwyd, Dyfed, Gwent, Gwynedd, Mid Glamorgan, Powys, South Glamorgan, West Glamorgan Grants of between 1,000 and 10,000 are available. The programme aims to empower local people, enabling them to create lasting change in their communities. Projects should be run by people directly affected by the issues they are dealing with and priority will be given to small, locally based groups or organisations in areas of disadvantage that have a clear understanding of the needs of their community. Comic Relief supports work where there is clear evidence of beneficial impact on people and communities who are excluded or disadvantaged through low income, rural or social isolation, age, disabilities, race, sexuality or gender. Grants will be awarded to innovative projects that: increase local services, build skills of local people, increase community cohesion respond to local economic needs The next round will be opening October 31st The closing date for the next round is:december 5th 2014 at 5pm.
