Leaflette s Lost Charms Key stages 1&2 Welcome to the magical, mystical place that inspired local author Tom Blofeld to write his series of children s books and create BeWILDerwood. The Twiggles are very fond of teachers, so they ve produced this handy guide for you. How nice of them! Make BeWILDerwood your classroom Children and grownups alike love BeWILDerwood especially teachers and their students. Here s why: We tailor all our activities to suit the age and needs of your group, making it super-relevant. BeWILDerwood is cross-curricular, and there are lots of opportunities to learn about the real creatures and plants that live in our marshes and woods. You can lead your group through the park with the help of our special teachers guide. We ll provide everything you need (including the first BeWILDerwood story book!) Inspiration, memories and photo opportunities are everywhere the perfect things to take home with you.

Introducing the Adventure There are many creatures and characters that live in BeWILDerwood Marsh Boggles, Tree Twiggles and Thorny Crocklebogs, to name just a few. But the most famous Boggle of all (who I am sure you ve heard of) is Swampy. Swampy has been on many adventures around BeWILDerwood often accompanied by his cousin Moss and Moss s wife, the beautiful Twiggle Leaflette. After their last adventure, Moss gave Leaflette a very special bracelet. On the bracelet were hung little keepsakes and charms which Moss had collected to remind Leaflette of their wonderful adventures around BeWILDerwood. Unfortunately, the charms have been lost and are thought to be scattered across BeWILDerwood! You re going to save the day by helping find Leaflette s lost charms during your adventure. The Adventure Booklets When they arrive, every child will get their own adventure booklet (there s an example in this pack). The booklets are packed with exciting clues both visual and verbal to help them find all eight lost charms. And in case all that wasn t enough, the Boggles have thrown in some extra problem-solving games and puzzles too! The adventure gets you and your teaching staff involved too. Fun and learning is compulsory for everyone at BeWILDerwood. Human beings and marsh creatures young and old are encouraged to play. There s more fun stuff available to download from our website. You may wish to plan these into your visit or just turn up on the day and let the park lead you on your own adventures. It s up to you. Before your visit We ve given you Tom s first book, A Boggle at BeWILDerwood, to read before you visit. There s even a short video on our website homepage which you could all watch together. These will help set the scene and get everyone excited about the visit. You can meet the characters, view the interactive park map and read about our books on the Let s Explore section of our website.

What to wear The Twiggles and Boggles are very sensible when it comes to clothes, and always dress for lots of slipping, sliding, rolling and squelching and general muddiness. Like Moss and Leaflette, you and your class will get the most out of BeWILDerwood when you re dressed in your toughest, most play-proof things. What to bring Group leaders may like to bring a clipboard or folder with them to keep adventure booklets safe whilst children (and adults!) are playing on the equipment, or in case of wet weather. And don t forget to bring a pen, and pencils for each student. Organising your group We don t like to make too many rules at BeWILDerwood; so you can find Leaflette s lost charms in any order you wish. This means you can split yourselves into small groups (about 10 or so works well), each starting at different clue points and working around the park in a random order. There s more on this in the Plan your day and Structure your day documents, which you ll also find in this pack. Starting the day Once you ve arrived at BeWILDerwood, collect your adventure booklets from the Grubbles Greeting Gate and hand them out. Everyone s probably itching to get started; but first, ask the children to have a think about what they ll find on their adventure and record their expectations in the first bit of the My Adventure section in their adventure booklets. This will be useful to look back on at school. You ll have plenty of time to answer parts of this section at set points throughout the day. Now, get into your groups and allocate a first clue to each group, according to your plan. Each group should study their clue carefully. Which part of BeWILDerwood might it refer to? Encourage the children to look at the Where in the WILD are we? map board near the Grubbles Greeting Gate to help them or, if they get really stuck, to ask a member of the Twiggle Team or start with another clue (find these in the adventure booklets).

Setting off on your adventure Keep your eyes peeled for the lost charms, which look a little bit like this: Each lost charm is shown on the right-hand side of the sign and the clues are linked by colour. The border around each clue in the adventure booklet matches the background colour of relevant signs in the park. Decide where you all think the clue is leading you. If you need to, use a map to help (use the Clue locations and answers sheet if you get stuck or ask a member of the Twiggle Team). Once the group has worked out where the first charm is, you can all set off on your adventure to find it! Getting to the clue points Once you ve found the lost charm you re looking for, do a little drawing of it in your adventure booklets and fill in the blanks of the fun fact, which is shown on the board. You may like to read through the information on the board and discuss it as a group (all the information boards can be downloaded from our website to help you with your advance planning.) Now it s time to put some of the things you ve learnt into practice and have some playtime, before you continue on your adventure in search of the next lost charm.

Throughout the day At convenient points during your adventure, get pupils to complete the next stage in the My Adventure section of their adventure booklets. You ll be able to talk about this when you all get back to school. At the same time, you could also take photographs; perhaps using them as a timeline when you review your visit or for a colourful classroom display. We d love to see what you did back at school so whether it s poems, pictures or something else, please get in touch! Lunch time is munch time The Munch Bar is a lovely place for lunch and just behind it is Leaflette s Lawn the perfect picnic spot! The BIG Hat is just nearby too. Now might be a good time to do some of the educational puzzles in your adventure booklets too. Play on the Slippery Slopes if there s time! And don t forget to use the recycling bins Twiggles hate litter! The toilets are here too if you need them. The adventure ends The adventure isn t over until all eight charms have been found and, of course, until everyone has had a spectacularly good time. Gather near the Grubbles Greeting Gate (or on the coach). Now you can share all the best bits of your day together. Did you find all of Leaflette s Lost Charms? Check against the Clue locations and answers sheet if you re not sure. Get the children to complete the final bit of the My Adventure section in their adventure booklet. Keep the magic going as you travel home by finishing any remaining puzzles on the coach, or save them for when you re back at school.
