They also provide opportunities for children to think about the different social conventions used to greet people in the UK and abroad. 3 Introduction (15 mins) Ask children to think about how they greeted their friends when they arrived at school today. What words and phrases did they use? In pairs, children write down the greetings they use most when they meet up with their friends in the morning. Invite pairs to share their greetings with the class and write them up on the board. Which is the most popular greeting? What else do children do when they greet their friends, for example do they shake hands? Watch the first couple of minutes of Amran s film which provides a glimpse of the life of a young girl who lives in Ethiopia: As Amran is walking back to her village with her father, their camel and donkey, they meet some friends. How does Amran greet her friend? Discuss children s observations and then, as a class, talk about the different ways they greet friends, family and carers. Main Activities Activity One- Greeting children: (35 mins) Ask your class to imagine a child from their partner school arriving in the UK with very little or no English. In small groups, children devise a brief role play to show their visitor how children in the UK greet their friends on the playground. What might they need to think carefully about eg tone, speed of voice and range of vocabulary? Invite two or three confident groups to show their role play to the class and invite feedback. Ask children to imagine that they are visiting their partner school for the first time (or a school in the country of the language you are learning). Would they know how to say hello to children on the playground? Would they be expected to shake hands? Invite children to share their suggestions. Model a greetings word or phrase which is known to be used by children in your partner school or children in the country of the language you are learning and ask the class to listen carefully and then repeat. Choose some of the following activities to help consolidate learning of the new vocabulary: exaggerate the shape of your lips when modelling greetings vocabulary walk around the room greeting several children - younger children may enjoy being greeted by a puppet ask confident children to repeat the word/phrase individually focus on and practise pronunciation challenges encourage children to practise the greetings with other children on their table or by walking round the room and meeting one another clap the syllables of words/phrases do a Mexican wave to practise the greeting play a song which uses the new vocabulary and ask children to raise their hand each time they hear a greeting word or phrase. How do children think this greeting is written? Ask the children to write their suggestions down. Now write the greeting on the board for children to compare. How close were their attempts? Draw children s attention to any graphemes which are different to English. For non-roman script languages, more time can be spent in showing how the word is written eg direction of writing, order of strokes. 4 5

4 Activity Two Greeting teachers: (15 mins) Ask children to think about the different ways you greet them. Do your greetings change throughout the school day? How are they different from the greetings used between children? Talk to your class about how you greeted your teachers when you were at primary school. Now ask your class to think about how children in the UK respond to their teacher s greeting. Do children in your class greet their head teacher in the same way as they greet you? What advice would they give to a child from their partner school who was visiting a UK school for the first time? For example, in Spain, it is acceptable for children to use their teacher s first name. Ask your class for their views on this and invite children who have attended schools outside the UK to share how teachers and head teachers were addressed in these schools. Plenary (20 mins) Children can now create A Little Book of Greetings to share with parents and carers. Type how to make a mini book into a search engine, to find clear instructions for making a eight page book using one sheet of A4 paper. The first double page can be titled Saying Hello To My Friends On the left hand side children write a word or phrase which children in their partner school use to say hello to their class mates. On the right hand side they write down two or three words or phrases that children use in UK schools. The next double page follows the same format with the title Saying Hello To My Teacher and the final double page is Saying Hello To My Head Teacher. Children can then use these little books to practise the newly learned greetings and to share the new language they have learnt with parents and carers. Introduce words/phrases and conventions for greetings between teachers, head teachers and children in your partner school. Using suggestions from Greeting friends, practise and reinforce the new language. In pairs, children practise the new greetings by taking it in turns to role play teacher and pupil. This will give you a chance to walk round and support pronunciation of individual children. Using the new vocabulary, write a simple dialogue between a teacher/head teacher and pupil and ask confident children to read aloud the greeting and the pupil s response. 6 7

5 Extension Activity Discuss with children the different visitors who come to their school. Has a VIP, for example, the mayor visited the school recently and can children remember how they greeted him/ her? Ask children to discuss in pairs how they would greet the Queen or another Head of State and feedback ideas. Ask children to investigate what the correct form of address would be when meeting the Queen. Extend greeting language to include How are you/i m fine, I m (give name). Younger children might like to role play meeting the Queen or their head of State with a partner. Older children could write short dialogues in English entitled Meeting the Queen. Both role plays and dialogues could be performed to the class, videoed and shared with your partner school. Curriculum links English Speaking and listening: speak with clarity, ask and answer questions, listen to others in class. PSHE -Think about the lives of people living in other places and about their different values and customs. Respect differences between people Resources Puppet, greetings song in the new language, A4 paper, microphones and flip cameras for exchange work Exchange work Send by post, fax or mail some of the examples children in your class use to say hello to their classmates and wait to receive up to date and popular greetings used by children in your partner school. Children write additional greetings in their little books. Make an audio recording of: a) greeting your class in the morning b) head teacher greeting the school at assembly time and to your partner school or post on your class blog. Video children s role plays of how they greet one another in the playground and send by post or, or put them on your class blog. 8
