RBCP: AGES 6-9 BLACK BODY BALL ELEPHANT BALL Key Learning To develop strength and flexibility. Goal Of The Game A circle game in which the children block a ball from going through their legs. What You Need Equipment Ball (football sized) - 1 per group No. of children 6 or more How To Play 1. Divide the children into groups of Ask each group to form a circle. Ask all children to stand with their legs spread apart. There should be no space on the ground between each child s foot and the foot of the child on either side (see diagram). 3. Ask the children to clasp their hands in front of them, as though their arms are an elephant s trunk (see diagram). 4. Place a ball in the centre of each circle. 5. Explain and demonstrate that: The goal of the game is to get the ball through the legs of the other children but also to protect the space between your own legs and stop the ball going through. The children cannot move their legs but use their elephant trunk to hit the ball and to protect their space. Make sure the children are swinging their arms safely within their personal space. If the ball goes through a child s legs then the player can only use one arm. If the ball goes through a second time, the child can turn around and continue playing but facing the outside of the circle. 6. Create a new game with the children who have had the ball go through their legs more than twice. 7. The game is finished at your discretion. BLACK BODY BALL PARTY PLANNER

ELEPHANT BALL CONTINUED Watch For Are the children keeping their legs spread apart? Are the children able to get the ball through each other s legs? Discussion Reflect What was the most difficult part of the game? What muscles could you feel stretching when you played this game? Connect When else in life does it benefit you to be physically flexible? Apply What are some stretches or activities you can do to improve your flexibility? Can you demonstrate them to me? Variations Play with 2-3 balls at a time. Play with a smaller ball. Inclusion Refer to pp. G7-G11.

RBCP: AGES 6-9 BLACK BODY BALL STAND UP PARTNER Key Learning To develop strength and skills for large movements. Goal Of The Game To stand up together as pairs and groups from a start position where children are back-toback and sitting on the ground. What You Need Equipment None No. of children 6 or more How To Play 1. Divide the children into pairs. 2. Ask the children to find a space in the play area. 3. Ask them to sit back-to-back and link both arms at the elbow (see diagram). 4. Explain and demonstrate that: When you say Stand up partners, the pairs should work together to stand up. Encourage the children to communicate with each other if they feel unsafe during the activity. Partners must keep their arms linked. 5. Allow a reasonable amount of time for the pairs to stand up together (1-2 minutes). 6. Ask partners to switch and try the game with new partners. 7. Have the children repeat the above steps in groups of four instead of two. BLACK BODY BALL Watch For Is every child able to work with their team to stand up? Do children seem to know how to work together to accomplish the task? Are children being good-natured and cooperative? PARTY PLANNER

STAND UP PARTNER CONTINUED Discussion Reflect What was the most difficult part of trying to stand up as a pair or group? What do you think helped you to stand up as a pair or group? What parts of yourselves did you use to accomplish this task (mind, muscles, voice, etc.)? Connect Describe some of the times when you work together in your family and your community to accomplish a task. What other times in life do you need to use these same muscles? Apply Why is it important to work together as a team to accomplish goals? Variations Ask the children to try this using only one leg. Continue to increase the group size (for example, stand up in groups of 5, 6 or 7). Inclusion Refer to pp. G7-G11.

PARTY RBCP: AGES 6-9, 10+ BLACK BODY BALL CHIMP RACE Key Learnings To develop fitness, flexibility and motor skills for large movements. Goal Of The Game A relay race in which the teams run like a chimpanzee through a set course. What You Need Equipment Cone or marker 1 per team Chalk (anything to mark a start line) No. of children 6 or more How To Play 1. Divide the children into teams of Ask each team to form a straight line behind the start line. 3. Place a cone or marker approximately metres in front of each team (see diagram). 4. Explain and demonstrate that: This is a relay race. When the game begins, the first player from each team, Player A, will bend over and grab their ankles. Then the A s run around the cone and back to their teams to tag the next player s hand (see diagram). The children cannot let go of their ankles while moving. Ensure that the children do not hit their chins with their knees. Encourage them to keep their heads up. 5. The second child must wait to be tagged before starting to run. 6. The relay continues until all players have run the course. Watch For Are children holding their ankles for the entire course? Are the children waiting to have their hand tagged before starting the race? BLACK BODY BALL PARTY PLANNER

CHIMP RACE CONTINUED Discussion Reflect What was the most challenging part of this race? How many of you were able to keep your hands on your ankles throughout the entire race? What parts of your body could you feel stretching? Connect In what other activities do you need to be flexible? Apply What are some ways to improve and increase your flexibility? Can any of you demonstrate some stretches that help you to improve flexibility? Variations Vary the body part the children must hold (for example, arms behind the back or hands on head). Repeat the relay, but this time place obstacles for children to move around and over. Inclusion Refer to pp. G7-G11.

RBCP: AGES 6-9, 10+ BLACK BODY BALL CROWS AND CRANES Key Learning To develop fitness and motor skills for large movements. Goal Of The Game Tag-like game in which one team tries to reach the safety zone without the other team tagging them. What You Need Equipment None No. of children 6 or more How To Play 1. Divide the play area into 4 sections with 2 safety zones and 2 playing areas (see diagram). 2. Divide the children into two equal-sized teams. 3. Name one team Crows and the other team Cranes. 4. Ask the teams to line up along the centre line and face each other (see diagram). Make sure children are 1 metre away from their teammates and the other team s players. 5. Explain and demonstrate that: This is a tag game. When you call out Crows!, the Crows will chase the Cranes to their safety zone. When you call out Cranes!, the Cranes will chase the Crows to their safety zone. A child tagged before reaching the safety zone switches teams. 6. The game continues until only one child is left on a team, or at your discretion. Ensure that there is enough open space to play this game safely. BLACK BODY BALL Watch For Are the children running when they are supposed to? Are the children being honest about being tagged? PARTY PLANNER

CROWS AND CRANES CONTINUED Discussion Reflect What muscles did you use in this game? Connect What types of chores do you do that use your leg muscles? What other muscles do you use for your daily chores? Apply How can strengthening your legs and arms help you in your daily life? Variations Increase the length of each play area. Draw out the beginning of both words (for example, Crrrr ) to keep the children in suspense as long as possible. Ask the children to sit down each time you call a name. They will have to stand up before they can run. Turn the game into a life-size rock, paper and scissors game using animals (for example, elephant, mouse and cat ). The children make up the action that represents each animal. Similar to the way you play rock, paper scissors but in this game: Mouse beats Elephant Cat beats Mouse Elephant beats Cat The teams collectively decide what animal to be. On your signal they act out their chosen animal. The winning team chases the losing team. The players who are tagged join the other team. The game continues for as long as you want. Inclusion Refer to pp. G7-G11.

RBCP: AGES 6-9 YELLOW SPIRIT BALL SILLY BALL Key Learning To develop selfexpression and creativity. Goal Of The Game A game where children work in teams and move a ball to a marker and back using the same action as the Silly Ball Leader. What You Need Equipment Ball 1 per team Cone or marker (could be a rock) 1 per team Chalk (anything to mark a start line) No. of children 6 or more How To Play 1. Divide the children into teams of Mark a clear start line. 3. Ask the teams to line up, single file behind the start line. 4. Place a cone or marker directly in front of each of the teams, approximately metres away (see diagram). 5. Explain and demonstrate that: The child at the beginning of the line is the Silly Ball Leader. This child must move the ball down the play area, around the cone and back to the team in a creative way (for example, kicking the ball, hopping with the ball between the knees, rotating the ball around the waist). Once the Silly Ball Leader returns, each child will take a turn using the same actions that the Silly Ball Leader used to move the ball down the field, around the marker and back. Once all team members have returned, the second child in each line will become the new Silly Ball Leader. 6. Encourage the Silly Ball Leader to choose a new action to move the ball down the field, around the marker and back. 7. Ask all of the children to repeat these steps until each child has taken a turn as the Silly Ball Leader. Remind the children to move in a straight line to avoid colliding with other teams who are playing. Watch For Are all of the Silly Ball Leaders able to come up with a creative way to move the ball? Are all of the children repeating the action of their Silly Ball Leader? YELLOW SPIRIT BALL PARTY PLANNER

SILLY BALL CONTINUED Discussion Reflect What does it mean to be creative? As the Silly Ball Leader, how did you come up with a creative action for moving the ball? Did you enjoy being the Silly Ball Leader? Why or why not? How did you feel when following and leading during this activity? Why do you think you felt this way? Connect Can you think of other times in your life when you have had to be creative? Apply Why do you think many people value creativity? Variations Ask the children to move the ball as Silly Ball Leader, using any part of the body other than their feet. Inclusion Refer to pp. G7-G11.

RBCP: AGES 6-9, 10+ YELLOW SPIRIT BALL COURT JESTER Key Learning To develop an ability to have fun and experience happiness. To develop a sense of humour. To develop selfexpression and creativity. Goal Of The Game A circle game in which the children are challenged to try and make someone laugh. What You Need Equipment None No. of children 6 or more How To Play 1. Divide the children into groups of Ask each group to form a circle. 3. Ask for one child from each group to volunteer to be the Court Jester and to stand in the centre of the circle. 4. Explain and demonstrate that: The purpose of the game is for the Court Jester to make someone in the group laugh. The Court Jesters have 1 minute to perform a funny action or make a funny face to make a member of the group laugh. Once a child in the circle laughs, that person moves into the centre and becomes the new Court Jester. If 2 or more children laugh, they can decide between them who will become the new Court Jester. Explain to the children that this is a challenge by choice activity. If they do not feel comfortable in the centre, they do not have to go there and the group will respect that choice. 5. The game ends at your discretion. Watch For Are the children comfortable being the Court Jester? Are the children able to make each other laugh? YELLOW SPIRIT BALL PARTY PLANNER

COURT JESTER CONTINUED Discussion Reflect What did you like about this game? How did you feel when you were being the Court Jester? Connect What are some things in life that make you laugh the hardest? Apply When can it be helpful to make your friends laugh? Variations Ask 2 children to be the Court Jesters at the same time. Divide the children into groups of 3 and give each group 5 minutes to create a skit or action to make members of the other groups laugh. Inclusion Refer to pp. G7-G11.

What You Need Equipment Chalk (or anything to mark 2 lines between the web and the forest) No. of children 6 or more How To Play 1. Divide the play area into 3 sections. Make the middle section the biggest (see diagram). 2. Explain to the children that the middle area represents a big spider s web and the areas on the outside are the forest. 3. Ask the children to name things that spiders eat (for example, flies, bugs). 4. Ask for 2 volunteers to play the role of Spiders. 5. Ask the Spiders to sit in the centre of the web area and pretend to be sleeping (see diagram). 6. Tell the other children they are the Flies. 7. Ask the children to make the noise a fly makes (for example, Bzzz Bzzz ). 8. Explain and demonstrate that: The game starts with the Flies making Bzzz noises near the Spiders. When you say Spiders wake up! the Spiders will stand up and try to tag as many Flies as possible. The Flies can escape by running into the forest. Once they have crossed into the forest the Flies cannot be tagged. If a Fly is tagged, that Fly becomes a Spider and joins the Spider team. The Spiders will then sit and pretend to sleep and the Flies will Bzzz around them until Spiders wake up! is called again. 9. The game continues until all of the Flies are caught. 10. Play again and allow new volunteers to start the game as Spiders. Ensure that the size of your play area is appropriate for the number of children. YELLOW SPIRIT BALL PARTY PLANNER

SPIDER CONTINUED Watch For Are the Flies bzzzing" near the Spiders and staying away from the forest during the spider sleeping time? Are children laughing and having fun? Discussion Reflect How did you feel when you reached the forest? Connect Why is it important to feel safe? Apply When you are in the community, what can you do to make sure you are safe? Appoint more than one child to be it if the group is large enough. 2. Explain and demonstrate that: If the person that is it tags someone, the tagged child is frozen and must stand with legs apart. To become unfrozen, another child must crawl through the frozen player s legs. 3. The game is finished when all players are frozen. 4. The last person frozen becomes it for the next game. Ensure the play area is clean and free of obstacles. What You Need Equipment None No. of children 6 or more Watch For Are the children working hard to unfreeze the children who have been tagged? Are all of the children playing actively? BLUE PEACE BALL PARTY PLANNER

FREEZE TAG CONTINUED Discussion Reflect What did you do to help each other in this game? What did it feel like to unfreeze someone? Can anyone remember someone you helped by unfreezing them? Connect Can anyone think of a time when a friend has helped you out of a difficult situation? Describe it? How did it feel? Apply What are some examples of other things you can do to help others in life? Variations Once a child is freed from being frozen, they must stay connected to the child who unfroze them while trying to avoid being tagged. Inclusion Refer to pp. G7-G11.

RBCP: AGES 6-9, 10+ BLUE PEACE BALL CATCH THE DRAGON S TAIL Key Learnings To develop leadership, cooperative and team skills. As the Dragon, the group is to work as a team to keep away from the Knights. The Knight is trying to catch the Dragon by touching the Dragon s tail. 5. Encourage the Dragon to stay attached. If the Dragon comes apart, the Dragon s head becomes the tail. 6. If the Knight catches the Dragon, the Dragon s head becomes a Knight and the Knight becomes the Dragon s tail. 7. The game finishes at your discretion. Ensure the children are comfortable with the speed they move at as a Dragon. Watch For Are all of the children in the Dragon actively communicating and working well as a team? Do the children look comfortable running and moving while attached to one another? BLUE PEACE BALL PARTY PLANNER

CATCH THE DRAGON S TAIL CONTINUED Discussion Reflect What was it like to have different roles in the Dragon? How did you communicate with your teammates during the game? Are you less of a leader if you are in the body or tail of the Dragon? Why? Connect When else in life do you take on the role of a leader? When else do you take on a different role? Explain. Apply What can you do to be an effective leader when you are not necessarily the assigned group leader or captain? Why is it important to have people in both roles? Variations Eliminate the Knight and have the Dragon s head try to catch the tail of another Dragon. Increase the number of children in the Dragon s body and discuss how they feel as a contributing team member when the group is larger. Inclusion Refer to pp. G7-G11.

Are the children being gentle with each other? BLUE PEACE BALL PARTY PLANNER

HUMAN KNOT CONTINUED Discussion Reflect What was important for your team to do to untangle? How did you create a plan to get untangled? If you were to complete this task again in the future, what would you do differently? What would you want the team to do differently? Connect When else have you been part of a team that is working together to solve a problem? What role do you usually take on when you are in a team? (For example: Leader, follower, supporter, listener, speaker etc.)? Apply What can you do the next time you are working with a team to help the team work well together? Variations Make the groups larger. Time how long it takes each team to untangle. Assign one child from each team to be the Leader. Ask the Leader to stand back while the children in the team become tangled. The Leader s role is to organize and untangle the group as quickly as possible. The game is finished when all pairs have completed their turn. Before starting the race, be sure to give the children adequate time to walk around slowly to get used to this feeling. Encourage them to coordinate their legs so that the legs that are tied together act as one. BLUE PEACE BALL PARTY PLANNER

THREE-LEGGED RACE CONTINUED Watch For Do all participants understand how to comfortably share personal space? Have the participants had adequate time to get used to being three-legged prior to starting the race? Discussion Reflect How did it feel to be dependent on someone else to move? What did you and your partner do to be successful? Connect Have you ever had to work with someone who wanted to do things differently from you? What was that like?
