5 Disabled Access Guide for the ECA Architecture Building. toilets are also available. This building has been in part adapted for use by persons in wheelchairs and persons who have difficulty with mobility or are infirm. Seating is available. Accessible and standard Introduction. The ECA Architecture Building is a teaching facility which houses numerous studios, a computer room, a critique room, a seminar room, staff offices, the ECA Art Supply Shop and the Wee Red Bar. The ECA Architecture Building is a secure building which requires a valid university smartcard to access. In order to gain access, visitors are advised to report to a servitors office which is located within the adjoining ECA Main Building, or alternatively arrange to be met near the main entrance by their host. A Guide to Access for the ECA Main Building is available from: Location. The ECA Architecture Building is located within what is referred to as the Lauriston Campus of the University of Edinburgh which is well served by public transport. The Lauriston Campus is located within the city centre approximately two miles from the main student residences at Pollock Halls. The nearest railway lines are located at Waverley Station in the city centre and at Haymarket Station which is located to the West of the city centre. The nearest bus stops are located on the Grassmarket and Lauriston Place in excess of 150 metres of the ECA Architecture Building. Lothian bus service number 2 stops on the Grassmarket and service numbers 23, 27, 35, 45 and 47 stop on Lauriston Place (see map on the following page). Details of timetables are available from Lothian Buses, from their offices within the city and online from: Persons arriving by vehicle can access the ECA Architecture Building from: Lauriston Place; Lady Lawson Street via Lauriston Place; or, Keir Street via Lauriston Place (see map on the following page). Persons with mobility difficulties and wheelchair users arriving by vehicle are recommended to access the ECA Architecture Building from Lady Lawson Street via Lauriston Place. Lady Lawson Street is a one way street. Persons with mobility difficulties and wheelchair users are able to access the building at the main entrance which is located within the college courtyard (see map on the following page). However, wheelchair access is not currently recommended without Page 4.

8 Parking. Within the Lauriston Campus there are four university car parks (see location map). Anyone wishing to park within a university bay must display a valid parking permit. This includes staff, students, visitors and contractors. The first, and recommended car park for wheelchair users and persons with mobility difficulties who intend to access the ECA Architecture Building, is located off Lady Lawson Street (one way street) within the college courtyard. This car park is suitably surfaced for wheelchair users and contains a disabled bay. There is level access from this car park to the ECA Architecture Building via a footpath which is located at the front of the ECA Main Building. College courtyard car park image. The second university car park is located off Lauriston Place, to the front of the ECA Hunter Building. This car park is also suitably surfaced for wheelchair users and contains a disabled parking bay. However, access from this car park to the ECA Architecture Building is in excess of 100 metres and is in part via a steep footpath. Car park at the front of the ECA Hunter Building image. Page 7.
9 The third university car park is located off Lady Lawson Street, to the rear of ECA Evolution House. Like the aforementioned car parks, this car park is suitably surfaced for wheelchair users and contains a disabled bay. However, access from this car park to the ECA Architecture Building is in excess of 200 metres and is via footpaths which comprise a steep gradient. Please note that this car park is accessed via a secure gate which requires a key fob to open. Secure gate image. ECA Evolution House car park image. The fourth university car park is located to the rear of the ECA Architecture Building. This car park is unsuitably surfaced for wheelchair users, is exited via a steep gradient and is located in excess of 200 metres of the ECA Architecture Building. Access from this car park to the ECA Architecture Building is also in part via a steep footpath. Access to/from fourth car park image. Fourth car park image. There are eight additional university parking bays located to the side of the ECA Hunter Building, off Keir Street (see location map). Please note that these bays are currently out of use. If you do not hold a valid permit (or key fob) and require use of a university bay, it is recommended that contact is made with Transport & Parking prior to your journey (see contact information page). 10 City of Edinburgh Council pay and display parking bays are located along Lady Lawson Street and some of Keir Street. There are limited drop kerbs from the bays along these streets to the adjacent footpaths, and, access from these bays to the ECA Architecture Building is in excess of 150 metres; via footpaths which are in part of a steep gradient. Outside Access. The ECA Architecture Building has two entrances. The main entrance is located within the college courtyard and is accessed via a ramp which is of a shallow gradient and incorporates handrails to both sides. Main entrance image. There is a secure door at the main entrance which requires a valid university smartcard to access. The door is automatic and is operated using a card proximity reader/keypad which is located beyond the handrail on the right of the ramp. The card proximity reader/keypad is out with comfortable reach of wheelchair users, and as a result, wheelchair access at this entrance is not currently recommended without Card proximity reader/keypad image. 11 The secondary entrance is located to the rear of the ECA Architecture Building. This entrance is unsuitable for wheelchair users and persons with mobility difficulties; access to this entrance is via numerous stairs down from Heriot Place or up from the Grassmarket (see location map). In addition to the aforementioned stairs, access to the secondary entrance is via a secure gate which is heavy, is operated manually and requires a pin number to open. Secure gate image. Upon proceeding through the secure gate, access to the secondary entrance is via a further flight of stairs. These stairs incorporate a handrail to the right which serves the lower half of the flight and a handrail to the left which serves the upper half of the flight. Page 10.
12 Stairs image. The secondary entrance door is secure, is double width, is heavy, opens outwards and is operated manually. A pin number is required to gain entry at this entrance. If you are a wheelchair user or have mobility difficulties and intend to access the ECA Architecture Building, it is recommended that contact is made with the ECA Health and Safety Officer prior to your journey (see contact information page). Internal Access. The ECA Art Supply Shop is located on level five (K) of the ECA Architecture Building. Wheelchair access to the shop is possible from the main entrance via nine doors and a lift (see floor plans). Several of the doors are held open on mag locks, although assistance may be required to negotiate those which do not incorporate mag locks. Page 11.
13 The Wee Red Bar is located on the ground floor of the ECA Architecture Building close by the main entrance (see floor plans). The entrance door to the Wee Red Bar is single width, opens inwards and is operated manually. There is a small threshold ramp located at the base of the entrance door which is negotiable by wheelchair with care. There is level internal access between the ECA Architecture Building and the adjoining ECA Main Building on level three (J) (see floor plans). There is ramped internal access between the ECA Architecture Building and the adjoining ECA Hunter Building on levels three (J) and seven (L) (see floor plans). The ramps are of a moderate gradient and do not incorporate handrails or a tactile surface at the top/bottom. There is a café located on the ground floor of the adjoining ECA Hunter Building. Wheelchair access to the café is possible from the ECA Architecture Building via either of the aforementioned ramps, several manually operated doors, and, a lift, which is located within the ECA Hunter Building. Please note that this lift is not currently recommended for use by wheelchair users without Guides to Access for the ECA Main Building and the ECA Hunter Building are available from: Reception. There is no reception within the ECA Architecture Building. There is a reception and a servitors office located in the adjoining ECA Main Building. The reception personnel can provide directions and the servitors can provide assistance for wheelchair users and persons with mobility difficulties. To arrange assistance prior to your journey please call the servitors office on: There is a further reception located in ECA Evolution House which can provide assistance with general enquiries. All floor levels except -1 (G) & -2 (H) are accessible by lift (see room directory). Page 12.
14 - There is level access to the lift from the main entrance. - The lift call points and car controls are within comfortable reach of wheelchair users. - The control panel has braille markings. - The lift car has two sided access. - The lift has an alarm. - There is contrast between the lift wall and floor surfaces. - There is no induction loop. - There is an audible announcer. - The lift car interior has handrails on the sidewalls. - There is a visual floor indicator. - The lighting level in the lift is not good. - The lift doors have pressure sensors. Stairs. All floor levels are accessible by stairs. - All stairs have contrasting nosings. - The main stairwells have handrails to one or both sides. - The lighting level in stairwells is good. 15 Toilets. Accessible toilets are located on levels three (J) and seven (L) (see floor plans). - There is right hand lateral transfer space in the accessible toilet which is located on level three (J). - There is left hand lateral transfer space in the accessible toilet which is located on level seven (L). - There is good manoeuvring space in both of the accessible toilets. - There are emergency pull chord alarms. - The doors open inwards. - The width of the accessible toilet doors is suitable for wheelchairs. - There are suitable dropdown and support rails for transfer. - The tap type is lever operation. - There is not a coat hook. - The contrast between the grab rails and walls is not good. - The contrast between the walls and floors is good. - The lighting level in the cubicles is good.
