1 1: Stage 1: One t ne cunting Welcme t Mdule Six This is ne f seven mdules describing effective teaching practices. Once yu have finished yu will be able t select and implement learning activities apprpriate fr students wrking at stage 1: ne t ne cunting. 2: General principles fr the teaching and learning activities presented: Activities are designed t strengthen students understandings within the ACTUAL STAGE that they are linked t. Teachers wishing t mve students int the next strategy stage need t select activities linked t that NEXT STAGE. Each f the teaching mdules is structured under the fllwing headings: Strategy stage review Knwledge being develped Activities t develp knwledge Strategy being develped Activities t develp strategy. The knwledge cmpnent is described first as the knwledge utlined prvides a fundatin fr the develpment f strategy at each stage. The activities assume that students understand the ideas frm earlier stages s it is imprtant that teachers check that students have these understandings. The activities d nt necessarily require the purchase f specialised materials. In general they use resurces readily available within New Zealand schls r easily accessible frm the prject materials sectin f the nzmaths website. The activities presented here are prvided as a starting pint. Teachers are encuraged t develp ther activities using the methds presented here as the basis f an apprach. Further ideas fr activities can als be fund frm the number sectin f nzmaths, frm the Numeracy Develpment Prject Bks, and by using the Numeracy Planning Assistant 3: Strategy stage review Stage 1: One t ne cunting The One t One Cunting stage is characterised by students wh can cunt and frm a set f bjects up t ten, but cannt slve simple prblems that invlve jining and separating sets, like Vide Clip 4: Knwledge being develped There are tw types f knwledge students need t learn at this stage. 1. Frwards and Backwards Number Wrd Sequences "One, tw, three, fur." Students need t be able t say the sequence f numbers up t at least Numeral Identificatin Students need t be able t read and write numerals t at least 10. In particular students need t be able t identify numerals and recrd numerals t match sets. Number Wrd Sequences are part f the Number Sequence and Order dmain f knwledge, and Numeral Identificatin is part f the Written Recrding knwledge dmain in the Number Framewrk.

2 5: Activities t develp knwledge: frwards and backwards number wrd sequences Rte cunting is a valuable activity that can be dne in many ways. Sit in a circle and cunt tgether. Clapping r ther rhythmic mvements can be used t emphasise each number in the cunting sequence. Cunt in different vices "Let s all cunt t 8 in a whisper vice, let s all cunt backwards frm 14 using a giant vice." Use every pprtunity t cunt tgether. Cunt the number f library bks as they are returned, the number f children that are lined up waiting r the number f paint brushes needed fr the class. Students in small grups pass an bject arund the circle. As each student receives the bject they say the next cunting number. What is the highest number the grup can cunt t? Reverse the directin the bject is passed and cunt backwards. 6: Activities t develp knwledge: numeral identificatin Writing Numbers Get students t practice writing numbers in many different ways. Fr example: painting numbers: "Let s all paint sme eights. Can yu paint a small eight? Can yu paint a large eight? Can yu paint a red eight?" tracing numbers in trays f sand making numerals ut f clay include numbers in yur handwriting prgramme. "Tday we re wrking n letter L and the number 4" use calculatrs "Press number 3, nw press number 9." 7: Activities t develp knwledge: numeral identificatin Lily Pads Place numeral cards arund the rm, tell the students the numbers are lily pads and they are frgs. They need t find the number yu call ut and jump n it. "Jump n number 7, jump n number 6". Numeral cards are Material Master 4-1 (available frm Material Masters). Number fans This Number fans equipment animatin shws hw number fans can be used t help students identify written numerals. Start wrking with numbers t 5, and nce students have mastered these wrk n numbers t 10, then 20. Number fans are Material Master 4-10 (available frm Material Masters) 8: Activities t develp knwledge: numeral identificatin Lucky Dip Have the students take turns drawing numeral cards frm a large bag. As each student takes a "lucky dip" ask them t tell the thers what number they have gt and then all practice writing the number in the air tgether. "What number have yu gt Sam? A seven. Lets all draw seven in the air. Acrss and dwn, that s hw we write a seven." Numeral cards are Material Master 4-1(available frm Material Masters)

3 9: Strategy being develped At this stage students are learning t cunt ne t ne. In rder t be able t cunt students must be able t: 1. say the frward number wrd sequence: "One, tw three, fur " 2. match the items r actins being cunted ne t ne with each number in the sequence. 10: Activities t develp strategy Students need t have experience with tw types f cunting tasks: 1. frming a set f a given number, fr example "Can yu get me 6 buttns?" 2. cunting the number in a given set, fr example "Hw many candles are n the cake?" A variety f examples f these types f tasks fllw. Yu will be able t use yur wn ideas t create activities and games that invlve cunting and are related t students interests r the current tpic f study. 11: Activities t develp strategy Making flwers Give students circles f card, each with a number in the middle. Students place the apprpriate number f pegs nt each circle t make flwers.

4 12: Activities t develp strategy Car Race Tell students that there is ging t be a race and they need t line the cars up s they are ready. "Can yu get 6 cars ready t race?" Cunt tgether t check there is the right number. Ask students t write dwn the number f cars that are ging t race. Play dugh cakes Have students make play dugh cakes, using sticks t represent candles. Students shuld swap cakes and cunt the number f candles n their partner s cake. Recrd tgether the number f candles n each cake. Feeding the birds Give each student a card with a picture f sme birds. Ask students t cunt hw many birds are n their card and write this number dwn. They then get enugh "seeds" (cunters) s that the birds n their card can have ne seed each. T check that they have the right number f seeds, match each bird with ne seed by placing each cunter n ne bird. Swap cards and repeat. 13: Activities t develp strategy Rckets game Make each player a game bard with 4 rckets, each rcket cntaining 8-12 squares that can be filled using cunters. T play the game students take it in turns t rll the dice, cllect the apprpriate number f cunters and then place these nt ne f the rckets. The aim f the game is t fill all f the rckets, ready fr blast ff. Each rcket needs t be filled with the crrect rll f the dice, fr example a rll f 5 cannt be used t fill the last 3 spaces in a rcket.

5 14: Activities t develp strategy Tea Party Ask students t set up a tea party fr teddies. Fr example, tell them there will be 6 teddies at the party and each teddy will need a plate, a cup and a spn. Once the party is set up students can cunt again t check that there are the right number f plates, cups and spns. Reinfrce the written recrding f the numeral "6" by asking students t select the number f teddies cming t the party frm a set f numeral cards. Many tasks can be devised that invlved cunting. Use yur wn ideas t create activities and games that invlve cunting and are related t students interests r the current tpic f study. 15: Activities t develp strategy Vide f ther teaching activities.
