What is FTTH? What is "Fiber To The Home (FTTH)" and what does it do? Fiber-To-The-Home is an advanced telecommunications technology that uses glass fibers to transmit video (CATV), data (Internet), and voice (telephone), at very high speeds and large volume to homes and businesses. FTTH will be able to send many future services to your home as these services develop. Other acronyms for FTTH which mean the same thing are FTTP (Premise), FTTU (User), FTTS (Subscriber) and FTTB (Business
FTTX (FTTX) refers to several different optical fiber architectures that can all be grouped under the category fiber to the x (FTTX), because all replace all or part of the usual copper loop used for telecommunications with a shorter or longer stretch of fiber. The four technologies, in order of an increasingly longer fiber loop are: In the actual deployments, the difference between FTTN and FTTC is quite subtle and is mostly that the latter is nfiber to the node / neighborhood (FTTN) Fiber to the curb (FTTC) / Fiber to the cabinet (FTTCab) Fiber to the building (FTTB) Fiber to the home (FTTH) The poorly-defined term fiber to the premises (FTTP) is sometimes used to describe FTTH and/or FTTB.[1]
Background The telecommunications field can be very confusing and complex for nonexperts -- or, for that matter, even experts. Almost no industry changes as fast as telecommunications, except perhaps the personal computer industry, which is closely linked to developments in telecommunications.
Why Customers Need FTTH? To have: Virtually unlimited bandwidth capacity Integrated voice, data, and video

Bandwidth Chart
Why Providers Opt for? It has An ability to offer integrated services could mean higher profits No electronics in the field means less maintenance Costs of implementing technology are dropping - are similar to costs of deploying copper but payoff is much larger
Limitations to Customers Not widely available yet Monthly and installation costs may be prohibitive Needs battery back-up in case power goes out
Limitations to Providers Uncertainty over willingness of residential customers to pay for it since most people don't need that much bandwidth capacity Easier to deploy in new neighbourhoods rather than existing ones because of cost and inconvenience of laying cable (using sewer or electric lines may allow providers to overcome this obstacle).
Leading FTTH Technology PON (Passive Optical Network) It means elimination of active components Access network consists of one bidirectional light source and number of passive splitters. Termination point in the central office is called as OLT (Optical Line Terminal) whereas in the CPE (Customer Premise Equipment), it is called as OLT / ONU (Optical Line Unit / Optical Network Unit)
