1 Name: Date: 1. Dear School Board Member, At River Edge School, the PTA has purchased new playground equipment. Our school is growing and really needs the new equipment. However, the plans are to put the equipment where a grove of trees now stand. These are the only trees on that half of the playground. Those trees were here when this area was a forest and then a hunting preserve. We think the trees could be over a hundred years old. Also, the trees provide a shady place for both teachers and students to hang out on hot days. My teacher has taught us about the importance of saving our trees in order to help the environment. If the trees are cut down, the squirrels won't have a home anymore. The leaves are very pretty, too. If the school board would allow the PTA to move a set of old rotting benches and a water spout that does not work, the new equipment could be placed there. Then the trees could remain and shade our playground. This might cost a little more money, but the trees would be saved and our school would help save the environment. Please consider our request and help us be good citizens. Which of these, when included in the persuasive essay, would BEST develop reader interest. A. a study showing the age of the trees on the playground B. a history of playground equipment development over the years C. pictures of what the land looked like before the school was built D. student and teacher interviews about the new playground equipment 2. Table of Contents Flowers 1 Lawns 17 Trees 34 Shrubs 44 Weeds 51 Which page has information about growing roses? A. page 1 B. page 17 C. page 38 D. page 51 1

2 3. Dear Dr. James, I would like to get permission to add more time to my teaching days. My class has a five day specials rotation. Two of those days we go to Physical Education (PE). In order to have more time to teach, I want to ask that on PE days my students not go out for recess. They have already played and exercised for fifty minutes. Specifically, by them not going out to recess, I would have an extra twenty to thirty minutes on those two days. This extra hour would be enough time to teach spelling and grammar everyday and give us more writing time. In my opinion it is not unreasonable to ask students to give up play time in order to get more instructional time. However, I feel that students and parents may not agree with me in the beginning, but eventually they will realize it will help them become better students. Thank you for considering this request. I am sure you will agree it is in the best interest of the students. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions. Sincerely, Ms. Johnson What position does the writer state? A. She wants to extend the school day. B. She wants more time to teach. C. She wants to have more PE. D. She does not like recess. 4. In sentence 2 below, what part of speech is the word park? (1) Park the car here. (2) Let's go to the park. A. a noun B. a pronoun C. a verb D. an adjective 2

4 7. School Lunches I feel that school cafeterias should serve better lunches. Students should be allowed to vote on their favorite meals, and then the cafeteria staff would know what kids will eat. If the students like what is being served, they will eat all of their lunch and not throw it away. Some kids hide their food in the milk carton so they don't have to eat it. Parents would be willing to pay more money for lunches their kids would eat. By serving student's favorite foods, everyone will be happy. The kids will be happy with the food choices. Parents will be happy that their kids are eating. Teachers will like it when their students are not hungry and can learn. The cafeteria will make a lot more money. Having students make the food choices sounds like a great idea! Which of these organizational structures is BEST suited for the author's purpose? A. State all of the supporting details in the introductory paragraph, then close with the main idea. B. Addressing the audience directly by including large, technical words and illustrations. C. Beginning with humor try to grab the readers' attention, then follow up with a chronological listing of school lunch history. 8. Use the paragraph below to answer this question. 1 Elephants are called giants of the land. 2 These large animals are very, very big. 3 They weigh between 3 to 6 tons. 4 At that size, it's not surprising elephants eat 300 pounds of food a day. Use the paragraph below to answer this question. 1 Marco's team has won the soccer tournament two years in a row. 2 The players on the team practiced very hard and had great attitudes. 3 Marco's team won the tournament two times. 4 Marco's coach took the team out for ice cream after both of the tournaments. 5 Marco put his trophy from the tournament on his bookshelf.
