2 Welcome Fuel your across the curriculum with a visit to the National Coal Mining Museum for England and give your pupils a unique experience they will never forget. Our historic buildings, interactive galleries and the chance to go underground in a real coal mine provide a creative space where pupils can investigate the past, see science in action, dress-up, draw, touch the real thing and be amazed. Whether you are studying local history, science or looking for inspiration for a literacy or art project, the Museum has so much to offer you and your pupils. Speak to a member of the Education Team for help with planning your visit, on or education@ncm.org.uk Underground experience 03 Workshops Teacher-led visits and gallery activities The Underground Experience GROUP SIZE/ SUPERVISION: Free 1 hour 20 minutes 2 adults: 17 students This is the exciting highlight of any school visit and is a truly unforgettable experience. With an ex-coal miner as their personal guide, pupils ride the cage 140 metres underground to discover Choose from: Meet a Miner Tour Pupils go on a chronological journey through mining history from the 1840s to the present day. Hands on Tour An interactive tour, which can be tailored to suit your group and includes the following activities: > Underground stables - muck out, harness and feed a model horse > 19th century mining - get your hands dirty and work as a family to dig the coal > the ages and play some lighting games > Geology - see a real coal face and handle rocks and fossils. 3 History Aunty Brenda s Pit Village Past KS1 and KS2 What was it like growing up in a coal-mining village? They will take part in hands-on STEM activities and work as a team to complete a mining engineering challenge. KS3 KS4 Pupils will see real science in action as they work with a science specialist from process of cleaning polluted mine water and 7, 14, 21 May and 4, 11, 18, 25 June teachers guide teachers guide Full day including underground tour Art Artist-led sessions Printmaking KS3 KS4 KS5 Pupils will take inspiration from the Museum landscape, architecture and collection to create preparatory sketches and experiment with different materials to produce a drypoint etching print , 16, 22, 23 October and 5, 6 November 2014 Full day Sketching and drawing around site and underground KS2 KS3 KS3 KS4 The original colliery buildings and Museum collections provide fantastic inspiration for sketching and drawing activities. You can also request to lead your own drawing exercises underground. Drawing boards are available to borrow and the education room can be booked as a base if required. Free Arts Award The Museum is an ideal place to begin an Arts Award project and several schools have supported their pupils in achieving an Arts Award using the Museum site and collection as inspiration. 5 Explore the Museum Teacher led visits and gallery activities We welcome teacher-led visits, but they do need to be booked in advance. Make the most of exploring the Museum by using our pupil activity trails and teacher resources, available on our website The Museum site The Museum is set on a large site across two former coal mines, Caphouse Colliery and Hope Pit. There are so many things to see and do, which will keep your pupils occupied, excite their curiosity and fuel across the curriculum. Authentic pit buildings Our historic Caphouse site dates back to the late 1790s. See the steam winding engine installed in 1876 or visit the pithead baths where a miner s shift started. Drop in to the stables at or and listen to the Horsekeepers talk about how ponies were used underground. Galleries and exhibitions 1842 Gallery s Explore the working conditions and lives of the women and children who worked underground in the early 19th century before the 1842 Coal Mines Act changed their lives. Mining Lives gallery - What is a gala? How did miners act to change their working out about home and community, sports and leisure, disasters and strikes. Look out for the Art Cart stocked with drawing materials. Coal Interface Gallery - How did miners solve problems? Get up close to the Museum s inventions through time have made miners Hope Pit How did miners get down the mine? How did they breathe underground? How did they power their machines? Find the answers to these science questions and more with a visit to Hope Pit, a smaller colliery dating back to the 1830s. Nature Trail and reed beds Follow the Nature Trail and see how an old colliery spoil tip now creates a habitat for wildlife, plants and trees. Amaze your pupils with a trip to the reed beds to see how the Museum cleans the orange iron-rich minewater pumped from underground. 6 The Museum in your classroom The children had a fantastic experience and have learned a lot about light and dark. They have thoroughly enjoyed using the artefacts and the workshop has been a wonderful alternative to the usual class- based. What can they tell us about our local mining heritage? The story of miners and mining will unfold as your class explores Sally Fletcher and the 1842 Royal Commission - Meet Sally and explore working and conditions and jobs in the early 19th Century Lights Out! - How do miners see in the dark? This interactive workshop introduces pupils to the light sources used by miners past and present Videoconferencing Videoconferencing is an exciting and interactive way for pupils to learn about coal mining. Interview one of our miners in a Meet a miner session or look out for our term-time sessions where pupils can learn about the Bevin Boys and their contribution to WWII. Each box includes real objects, background information and images which stimulate curiosity and hands-on. Themes include the Coal Measures Fossils, 1984/85 Miners Strike, Victorian mining and mining portraiture.
