4 Government Policy As part of our reforms to the national curriculum, the current system of levels used to report children s attainment and progress will be removed from September 2014 and will not be replaced. By removing levels we will allow teachers greater flexibility in the way that they plan and assess pupils learning. The programmes of study within the new National Curriculum (NC) set out expectations at the end of each key stage, and all maintained schools will be free to develop a curriculum relevant to their pupils that teaches this content. The curriculum must include an assessment system which enables schools to check what pupils have learned and whether they are on track to meet expectations at the end of the key stage, and to report regularly to parents.

5 Our new system- Stages not Levels We are working with Classroom Monitor, our data management system to monitor and assess the progress of all children from Nursery to Year 6 Early Years will still be monitored using ELG, now for the first time, these directly link into our tracking system, so we can see how a child is doing from Nursery all the way through to Year 6. After Reception, each child will be working on Stage expectations. Within the stage, it is sub divided into the beginning of their learning, developing their learning, being secure in their learning, and then finally onto exceeding the expectations of that stage

7 Level 6 Level 5 Level 4 Level 3 Level 2 Level 1 Levels v Stages So now instead of a ladder approach, we have developed an upside down Christmas Tree approach! As pupils enter each stage, their knowledge and understanding of the curriculum broadens before they move up. For example, in the Autumn term, they might be able to add tens and units using place value, by the spring they understand this concept in decimals, and then they understand how this is used for money. The same concept in different ways. By the end of the year, each child should have mastered each stage. Stage 6 Stage 5 Stage 4 Stage 3 Stage 2 Stage 1 ELG

9 Mastery and Exceeding Mastery is the new buzz word in terms of assessment. It really means how children understand their depth and confidence in applying learning to different situations, not just more knowledge.

10 Key philosophical differences - maths The program of study for each year group is intended for all children regardless of their ability The central place of problem solving in the new National Curriculum to deepen learning The expectation is that the majority of pupils will move through the programs of study at broadly the same pace. Decisions about when to progress should be based on the security of the pupils understanding, and their readiness to progress to the next stage.

11 Moving forward Reporting to parents Every parents evening you will be told where your child is broadly in terms of their stage ability. You will receive a written report once a year which will state where your child is at the end of the academic year. Each year the majority of children will start the stage aimed at their year group each year group is linked to the stage year 1= stage 1 etc. The expectation is that most children will progress to their stage secure by the end of the academic year.

13 New National Testing Previously children were tested at the end of each Key Stage in Reading, Writing and Maths (and Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar for year 6) and results were recorded as levels to parents and schools. National expectations were that a child would be a 2b in year 2 and a 4b in year 6. Now Children will still sit national curriculum tests at the end of each key stage in Reading, Writing and Maths as well as Grammar new to KS1. In Maths, KS2 children sit 3 papers in total, one arithmetic and two reasoning papers, KS1 children 2 papers; 1 arithmetic, and one reasoning. In the past, the government has produced level 6 tests for pupils who can demonstrate attainment above level 5. There won t be separate tests for the most able from Instead the government is developing each test so that there is scope for higher attaining pupils to show their strengths.

14 Scaled Scores A pupil s scaled score will be based on their raw score. The raw score is the total number of marks a pupil receives in a test, based on the number of questions they answered correctly. The pupil s raw score will be translated into a scaled score using a conversion table. A pupil who achieves the national standard will have demonstrated sufficient knowledge in the areas assessed by the tests. This will mean that they are well placed to succeed in the next phase of their education. On the government scale 100 will always represent the national standard. The scale will have a lower end point below 100 and an upper end point above 100. We will publish KS2 test results on the NCA tools website in July Each pupil registered for the tests will receive: A raw score (number of raw marks awarded) A scaled score Confirmation of whether or not they attained the national standard
