7 FEATURES AND OPTIONS Martin Roberts doors are designed to simplify specification and speed up delivery. In addition to creating project specfic doorsets you can select from a range of standard options which allows us to shorten delivery times of our steel doorset packages and guarantees a high performance product at a competitive price. Performance Variants All doorsets are designed and custom built for general purpose, fire, acoustic, thermal and security applications. Supplied in a range of single, double, hinged or pivoted performance doorsets, they are tested and certified to suit the most challenging internal and external applications. Variety of Options By making effective use of a range of materials and finishes, ironmongery, vision panels and louvres, functional doorsets can be produced to meet almost any requirement. Finishes All doorsets are available in a selection of standard polyester powder-coated colours providing a superior, durable finish. Special powder-coated finishes such as metallic and stone cladding give the designer that something extra in the overall aesthetic. Brushed, patterned and mirror finish stainless steel doors and frames may be specified for aesthetics or arduous environments. Anti-graffiti materials are also available where doors are likely to be installed in areas subject to abuse. Quality Ironmongery To simplify specification a number of ironmongery sets have been preselected for their high performance and durable finish. Each item is selected to satisfy the door sizes, weights and performance required. We are also able to provide doors utilising other hardware manufacturers products to suit project specific requirements. In all cases, we will supply the full hardware requirement for the door, pre-fixed in the case of all non-projecting hardware. Louvres A selection of louvre options is available combining strength and security with excellent air flow characteristics. Ideal for plant rooms, catering and research facilities, our louvres can be upgraded to maintain the designated fire rating performance and be fitted with stainless steel insect and rodent proof mesh for additional protection. Vision Panels Doors are available factory fitted with optional standard size or custom made vision panels from a range of square, rectangular, narrow slot or circular designs. Specific vision panel sizes and types of glass may be selected to suit the Equalities Act, fire, security, acoustic or thermal applications. Side and overpanels may also be fully glazed. p7

8 DOORSET CONSTRUCTION Martin Roberts steel doorsets are precision engineered using the highest grade materials and have been successfully tested to 1 million cycles in accordance with BS EN 1191 attaining a Severe Duty classification. All doorsets are assembled using a glue press, heated to 60 degrees at a pressure of 100lbs per square inch, to bond the outer sheet to the inner core thus ensuring maximum adhesion and a flat, warp and distortion free panel. The construction and materials used may vary depending on the performance criteria required. For example, general purpose doors will be supplied without seals unless specifically requested but all acoustic doors will be supplied with seals and thresholds. A Left - knock-down butt jointed frame assembly. A Right - frame infill material added to acoustic or thermally rated doorset specifications. p8

9 [A] Frames are manufactured using 1.6mm zinc coated steel and are supplied in knock-down or fully welded formats. Knock-down frames are assembled on site. Welded frames are more suited to external applications to restrict moisture ingress. Frames for acoustic or thermally rated doorsets are filled with insulating material. A B [B] Door leaf is 50mm thick manufactured using 1.2mm or 1.6mm zinc coated steel, with proprietary core material and a true, vertical lock seam joint. Top and bottom rails are spot welded in position. C [C] Security doorsets (SD3) and Acoustic doorsets (AD5*, AD6* & AD7*) have a 70mm door thickness and are over-rebated on each vertical edge to prevent forced entry. 10 PERFORMANCE BASED PRODUCT RANGE Martin Roberts steel doorsets meet a wide range of requirements and combinations of performance such as general purpose doors; fire doors with acoustic performance; acoustic doors with thermal properties. Fire Resistance Fire costs lives and causes irreparable damage, costing businesses millions of pounds every year. The devastation caused by fire should never be underestimated. Similarly, the importance of adequate fire protection cannot be emphasised enough. The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2006 has effectively moved fire safety responsibilities from fire authorities onto building owners and operators. The stairways and corridors within a building can act like a chimney, allowing fire to spread quickly from one level to another. By isolating the fire and preventing it reaching these areas, fire doors not only buy occupants valuable time but also protect people and property from fire damage and the harmful effects of smoke. Thermal Insulation Demand for reduction of energy consumption is now a major consideration. Energy efficient buildings demand that running costs are kept at a minimum. Martin Roberts steel doorsets are designed specifically for such applications. All our doorsets are supplied with mineral wool backfilled frames, frame seals and low profile SAA thresholds as standard to satisfy air permeability and thermal requirements. Double-glazed vision panels are also available to special order incorporating low emissivity glass to reduce heat loss. All Martin Roberts steel fire doorsets are fire tested to EN1634 and Certifire approved, installed by Firas competence assessed site operatives and can offer protection from fire and smoke for up to 5 hours. p10

Satisfying performance requirements up to Rw53dB sound reduction, our acoustic steel doorsets are constructed from proprietary acoustic materials and fitted with acoustic frame seals to effectively reduce noise levels. Security Protection Combining aesthetics with strength, durability and performance, Martin Roberts security doorsets are ideal for installations such as cash rooms, retail outlets, universities, hospitals, hotels and domestic dwellings, where a high level of protection is required against vandalism and opportunist thieves. They are manufactured using the same high quality materials and construction as our bespoke project doorsets. Where lead times are critical, our most popular range of doorsets can normally be supplied and delivered from 10 working days after after sign-off of the order acknowledgement and subject to quantity and specification required. A wide selection of quality doorsets are available to suit general purpose, fire, security, acoustic and thermal performance or combinations of performance e.g fire rated door with acoustic performance. 13 SPECIAL DOORSETS Special Doorsets Martin Roberts Specials range is a variation on the doorsets available within the Fast Track range opposite. Like Fast Track doors, Specials are easy to order and are custom built using the same construction and materials as bespoke doorsets. However, the options that you can choose from within the Specials range are different. For instance, you can order glazed louvred overpanels, have more colours and ironmongery to choose from and all the vision panels and louvres are different. Dependent on specification and products, Specials can be supplied and delivered on site within 4-6 weeks and can be designed to suit almost any application, without compromising quality. 14 RAIL EXPRESS DOORSETS Rail Express Doors Martin Roberts Rail Express doorsets have been developed specifically for Tube Lines Ltd and Network Rail who require fast turnaround to meet time-critical deadlines without compromising quality. The range features specifically designed doorset arrangements to satisfy railway environments and are specified with Tube Lines and Metronet approved ironmongery. Any of the pre-selected doorsets can normally be supplied and delivered on-site within 4-6 weeks of an order being placed or a survey being carried out. Stainless steel doorsets can normally be supplied and delivered on-site within 6-8 weeks. 15 PROJECT DOORSETS Project Doors Where a specific project calls for doors which cannot be met by our standard Fast Track doorsets or Specials range, Martin Roberts doorsets can be designed and manufactured to meet all individual project requirements for single doors up to 3000mm high and 1320mm wide or double doors up to 3000mm high and 2640mm wide. In all cases we will supply full ironmongery requirements for each doorset with drawings for approval, although we are also able to supply doors utilising other hardware manufacturers products to suit specific applications. In all cases, doors and frames will be prepared for the specified hardware and all non-projecting items such as concealed door closers will be factory fitted. 16 GUIDE TO REGULATIONS Legislation and Building Regulations surrounding the specification of doorsets is wide and varied. Using our knowledge and experience we have reviewed all relevant documentation to highlight any areas required for special consideration. The Equality Act - How it affects product selection Known up until 2010 as the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) this legislation is designed to protect the rights of disabled people and includes the rights for access to and within buildings. Although it is civil rights legislation and does not directly relate to the design and construction of buildings it does have a close relationship with Approved Document M (ADM) of Building Regulations which will be the first reference point for physical alterations in seeking to fulfil obligations under the act. For circumstances where issues are not specifically covered in ADM, the guidance in BS 8300 will tend to be the next reference document to be consulted. B - A space of at least 300mm is generally required next to the leading edge of the door to enable wheelchair users to reach and grip the handle, unless the door is power operated. This subject is recognised in both Approved Document M and BS For doors and their related ironmongery, providing a reasonable level of contrast is highlighted as the key factor in being able to distinguish the location of the door within the wall and the location of the handle on the door. On a relative scale of (where 0 is represented by pure black and 100 pure white), a contrast of 30 degrees of difference is recommended within ADM between adjacent elements although it is accepted that a difference of 20 points may be adequate. p16

17 BS8300:2001 (Design of buildings and their approaches to meet the needs of disabled people) Location of Ironmongery The guidance in BS8300 provides the diagrams below to ensure the correct location of door furniture. Note: Where a full width mid-rail plate or lock are required the recommended pull handle size or position will need to be altered to avoid clashing with the plate or lock. Lever handle Height of operating door furniture is recommended at between 900mm and 1100mm (Preferred height 1000mm) Door protection against damage caused by a wheelchair Large pull handle recommended to help people in wheelchairs close the door behind them Vision Panels in Doors (Minimum zones of visibility) Building Regulations Approved Document M Entrance Doors Door leaves and side panels wider than 450mm have viewing panels giving a zone of visibility between 500mm and 1500mm (in one glazed panel). If necessary the panel may be interrupted between 800mm and 1150mm to accommodate a horizontal rail Internal Doors The same guidance applies as above but vision panels are to be provided only where appropriate p17
