1 Essential Question: How do biotic and abiotic factors influence the size and stability of populations that exist in specific ecosystems? Monday & Tuesday Students will learn what an ecosystem is, and how the living organisms use their environment to survive. Wednesday (9/2) Students will learn what environmental features include giving multiple examples in different areas of the world. Thursday (9/3) Students will learn about interdependence between abiotic and biotic factors are and how abiotic factors support life. Friday (9/4) Students will use what they learned this week to write a story. 1

(T & T) The organisms would die because the producers (plants) would dry up and not provide food for the first level consumers (herbivores) so all levels of the food chain would starve. 8
9 Application (On Your Own Work) 1. Using your Ecosystem Posters you completed earlier in the week, go back and color code the abioitc and biotic factors listed on your poster. Be sure to provide a key so learners can clearly identify the factors. 2. List 3 examples from nature that describe how biotic and abiotic factors work together to provide a healthy ecosystem. If your feeling super confident, you may attempt to supply 5 examples that exist in a complex ecosystem. Key Biotic = B Abiotic = A Example: Plants (biotic) use the energy from the sun (abiotic) to produce their own food (photosynthesis). 9
