Advent Wreath and Symbol Weekly Devotional Guide Introduction The Advent Wreath The Advent wreath is used to help us prepare for Christmas, our celebration of the coming of Christ. You can make a simple wreath by arranging 4 purple votive candles in a circle with a white Christ candle in the middle. Purple is the color of advent, symbolizing the royalty of Christ. The circle stands for God s love that is with us always. You can also arrange evergreen branches around the candles to symbolize everlasting life. On the first Sunday of Advent you light one of the purples candles. Use the devotional guide to include scripture, prayer and song. Continue to light the first candle each day during the week (at meals or at night, whenever the family is together). The second Sunday of Advent you light the first candle and the second candle. Add a candle each Sunday. On Christmas Eve and Christmas day, the final center candle is lit. White signifies the purity of Christ and reminds us the Jesus is the light of the world. Sometimes the third candle is pink to symbolize joy. Keep in mind that there are many ways to light the advent candles and many themes you can go by. What is presented here is just one option. You could also use the candle lighting ceremonies from the church bulletins or find your own online. The Symbol/Ornament Each week also has a symbol associated with theme. These are common symbols seen throughout the holiday season, but made more meaningful by attaching them to the Christmas story. As your family is out and about during the holidays, they can be on the look-out for the symbol of the week. Each child in the family could make an ornament symbolizing each week s theme using the suggested activity, or to simplify, you could use the cut out symbol to make a paper ornament for your tree.

Week 1: Hope Scripture: Isaiah 11:1-2 Centuries ago, people thought God was very distant. They only thought of God in fear and among the clouds above. They thought God zapped them when they did wrong. The prophets were people who listened to God, and they helped people see God in a new way. The prophets gave the people hope of a Messiah who would rescue them and build a kingdom that would never end. God sent Jesus to be our Messiah (Savior) and to show us what God is really like. Jesus taught us that God knows us and loves us. We light this candle to remind us of the Hope of Advent. Our God, we begin to prepare for the coming of the Christ Child and our hearts and lives are filled with hope. As we talk and work with each other during these weeks, help us to remember how Jesus taught us to love one another. Amen. Sing: O Come, O Come Emmanuel (During the week, light the first candle each day and say: We light this candle to remind us of Hope. ) Symbol/Ornament: Star Overlap Popsicle sticks to make two triangles and glue the corners together. Glue the triangles together to form a Star of David (as shown below). The star can be painted or decorated with glitter. David was the son of Jesse and a King of Israel. The Messiah was to come from the shoot of Jesse, which means that he would be descended from David.

Week 2: Faith Scripture: Luke 1:26-35 The Bible tells us that we only need to have faith the size of a mustard seed to make big things happen. Because of her faith, Mary was able to follow God s will for her life, even though it would difficult. We can have faith in God because God keeps God s promises. We light this candle to remind us of Faith. We light the first candle to remind us of Hope. We light this candle to remind us of Faith! Our God, we know that you keep your promises. Help us to have the faith of Mary and to believe in you enough to follow your will for our lives. Amen. Sing: Oh Little Town of Bethlehem (During the week, light two purple candles and say, We light this candle to remind us of Hope, and we light this candle to remind us of Faith. Symbol/Ornament: Cross Arrange two pipe cleaner halves into the shape of a cross. Cover each stem of the cross with beads, folding over the edges of the pipe cleaner to keep the beads in place. Fold the top part of the cross around a ribbon to make a hanger for the ornament. The cross has become a symbol of Faith. Although Jesus died on the cross, God raised Him so that He would live forever.

Week 3: Joy Scripture: Luke 2:4-14 Joy is something we often feel as we prepare for Christmas. Perhaps it is because of all the fun things that happen during these days. Our biggest joy comes from knowing that God gave us Jesus to be our friend, our Savior and our King. Jesus is with us always. We light this candle to remind us of Joy! Our God, our hearts are filled with joy and gladness as we spend this week preparing for our celebration of Jesus birth. Help us to share that joy with others wherever we may go. Amen. Sing: Joy to the World (During the week, light three candles and say: We light this candle to remind us of Hope, of Faith and of Joy. ) Symbol/Ornament: Bell Decorate a paper cup with paint, glitter, ribbon or foil. Punch a hole in the top and dangle a jingle bell so that it makes noise (see below). Use a pipe cleaner or ribbon to make a hanger for the ornament and tie a ribbon to finish the look. The sound of bells is happy and cheerful and is a great reminder of the Joy of the season.

Week 4: Love Scripture: John 3:16 We use the word love in so many different ways. We say we love a person, we love pizza, we love going to the beach. The Greeks had four different words for love. A friendship love was called philos. A romantic love was eros. The love that God has for us is charis (kah-ris). We translate that into English as grace. The love that we have for God as we respond to God s love is agape. This love causes us to do good to others and act in the way that God wants us to act. When we have agape love, we help to bring peace to the world! We light this candle as a symbol of God s Love. Our God, we thank you for the love that Jesus taught us. Help us to spread that love wherever we go, bringing peace to all the world. Sing: Go Tell It on the Mountain (As you light all four candles, say, We light these candles as symbols of Hope, Faith, Joy and Love. ) Symbol/Ornament: Wreath Cut a pipe cleaner in half and cover it with buttons or beads. Hook the ends of the pipe cleaner together to make a circle. Tie a ribbon into a loop and bow at the top to make a hanger and cover the pipe-cleaner ends. God s love for us is never-ending, like a wreath.

Christmas Eve or Christmas Day: Christ is Born! Scripture: Luke 2:8-20 The shepherds were the first to hear the announcement of Jesus birth and God s promise of peace and goodwill towards all men. They couldn t wait to go and see this thing that had taken place. Today we celebrate this wonderful gift from God the birth of our Lord and Savior. We light the last candle as a symbol of Jesus Christ, who is the light of the world. Our God, we thank you for the gift of Jesus this Christmas day. Like the shepherds, we can t wait to see what you have done! Help us to spread peace in the world by sharing your good news and loving others as Jesus taught us to love. Amen. Sing: Go Tell It on the Mountain, This Little Light of Mine (As you light all four candles, say, We light these candles as symbols of Hope, Faith, Joy and Love. Light the Christ Candle and say, Jesus is the Light of the World! ) Symbol/Ornament: Candle Wrap a toilet paper roll with white paper or paint it white. You can decorate it with gold ribbons or glitter glue. Stuff red, yellow and orange tissue paper into the top to make a flame. Punch holes in the top and string ribbon through to make a hanger. The candle reminds us the Jesus is the Light of the World. When we love others as Jesus taught, we are also a light in the world.
