1 Math Analysis Chapter Notes: Polynomial and Rational Functions Day 1: Section -1 Comple Numbers; Sections - Quadratic Functions -1: Comple Numbers After completing section -1 you should be able to do the following: 1. Add and subtract comple numbers. Multiply comple numbers. Divide comple numbers 4. Perform Operations with square roots of negative numbers. Solve quadratic equations with comple imaginary solutions In order to take a square root of a negative number mathematicians invented an epanded system of numbers called comple numbers. The Imaginary Unit i The imaginary unit is defined as i 1, where i = 1 Comple Numbers The set of all numbers in the form a + bi with real numbers a and b, and i, the imaginary unit are called the set of comple numbers. The real number a is called the real part and the real number b is called the imaginary part of the comple number a + bi. In order to add comple numbers you must add like terms. Practice: In 1-, Add or subtract as indicated: 1. ( i) + ( + i). ( + 6i) (1 i) In order to multiply comple numbers it is done using the distributive property and the FOIL method. After completing multiplication, we replace any occurrences of i with 1. Practice: In 1-, Find the products: 1. 7i( 9i). ( + 4i)(6 7i) Conjugate of a Comple Number The comple conjugate of the number a + bi is a bi, and the comple conjugate of a bi is a + bi. The multiplication of comple conjugates gives a real number: (a + bi)(a bi) = a + b (a bi)(a + bi) = a + b Math Analysis Notes 1
2 In order to divide comple numbers is really a process of multiplying by the comple conjugate of the denominator. Remember that you want to keep the epression the same value so you must multiply by 1, so what ever you do to the bottom of a fraction you must do to the top of the fraction. Practice: In 1-, Divide and epress the result in standard form: 1. 4 i 4 i. 7 i 4i Roots of Negative Numbers Principal Square Root of a Negative Number For any positive real number b, the principal square root of the negative number b is defined by: b i b When performing operations with square roots of negative numbers, begin by epressin all square roots in terms of i. Understand the relationship between degree and turning points. 7. Graph polynomial functions Definition of a Polynomial Function A polynomial function is a function of the form: 1 ( ) n n n f an an 1 an... a1 a0 The eponents are all whole numbers, and the coefficients are all real numbers. By smooth, we mean that the graphs contain only rounded curves with no sharp corners. Even-degree polynomial functions have graphs with the same behavior at each end. The Leading Coefficient Test The coefficient on the term with the largest eponent on the variable is called the leading coefficient. If the largest eponent is an odd number: If the leading coefficient is positive, the graph falls to the left and rises to the right. 8 The Leading Coefficient Test (continued) The coefficient on the term with the largest eponent on the variable is called the leading coefficient. If the largest eponent is an even number: Falls Right Rises Left Rises Right Falls Left If the leading coefficient is positive, the graph rises to the left and rises to the right. If the leading coefficient is negative, the graph falls to the left and falls to the right. Zeros are also called solutions and roots. If a zero occurs at the same -value an even number of times the graph of the function at that point touches the -ais and turns around. 11 Day 1: Section -4 Dividing Polynomials; Remainder and Factor Theorems; Section - Zeros of Polynomial Functions. After completing section -4 you should be able to do the following: 1. Use long division to divide polynomials. Use synthetic division to divide polynomials. Evaluate a polynomial using the Remainder Theorem Long Division of Polynomials 1. Arrange the terms of both the dividend and the divisor in descending powers of the variable.. Divide the first term in the dividend by the first term in the divisor. The result is the first term of the quotient.. Multiply every term in the divisor by the first term in the quotient. Write the resulting product beneath the dividend with like terms lined up. 4. Subtract the product for the dividend.. Bring down the net term in the original dividend and write it net to the remainder to form a new dividend. 6. Use this new epression as the dividend and repeat this process until the remainder can no longer be divided. Identify horizontal asymptotes 4. Identify slant asymptotes. Graph rational functions Finding the Domain of a Rational Function. Remember there are two things that restrict the domain and they are radical signs on variables and variables in the denominator of fractions. 1. If you have even indeed radicals set what is under the radical greater than or equal to zero and solve the resulting inequality for the domain.. If you have variables in the denominator set the denominator not equal to zero and sove the resulting inequality for the domain. Practice: in 1-, Find the domain of each rational function. Step 1 State Domain The value of the domain that is restricted is the value of the asymptote(s). If the domain is all real numbers then the graph of the rational function has no vertical asymptote. 16 Rational Function Rational Function are quotients of polynomial functions: p ( ) f( ). q ( ) Locating Vertical Asymptotes. p ( ) If f( ) is a rational function in which p() and q() have no factors and a is a zero of q(), the q ( ) denominator, then = a is a vertical asymptote of the graph of f. Over it may still have y-values that are restricted. The graph of a rational function has a slant asymptote if the degree of the numerator is one more than the degree of the denominator. Solve problems involving joint variation Direct Variation If a situation is described by an equation in the form: y = k, where k is a nonzero constant, we say the y varies directly as.
