1 The 2011 Fall Musical Auditions for: SWEENEY TODD School Edition The Demon Barber of Fleet Street Book by: Hugh Wheeler Music and Lyrics by: Stephen Sondheim Synopsis: The rare instance of a musical thriller, Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler s chilling, suspenseful, heart-pounding masterpiece of murderous barber-ism and culinary crime tells the infamous tale of the unjustly exiled barber who returns to 19th century London seeking revenge against the lecherous judge who framed him and ravaged his young wife. His thirst for blood soon expands to include his unfortunate customers, and the resourceful proprietress of the pie shop downstairs soon has the people of London lining up in droves with her mysterious new meat pie recipe! Sophisticated, macabre, visceral and uncompromising, SWEENEY TODD SCHOOL EDITION nevertheless has a great sense of fun, mixing intense drama with howling funny moments of dark humor. AUDITION PROCEDURES: PRE-AUDITON VOCAL CLINIC: Wednesday, August 24, 2011 Performing Arts Center 3:40 pm NO PREPARATION IS NECESSARY- JUST SHOW UP!! Men and women will be taught excerpts from a couple of different songs. You will learn the music in a group, singing through the song together.
2 Songs will include: The Ballad of Sweeney Todd, No Place like London, The worst pies on London, My Friends, Green Finch and Linnet Bird, Epiphany, By The Sea, Johanna, Ah, Miss, Not While I m Around, Pretty Women Have A Little Priest and City on Fire. Please keep in mind that Sweeney Todd has a very challenging vocal score and it is essential that we have a cast of strong singing voices. The ensemble is crucial in telling the story and will have a very important role in the show. We will be looking for strong singers who have the ability to tell a story through their voices and acting abilities. THE AUDITION PROCESS: Please bring your signed audition perm ission slip and a nonreturnable picture of you, (one that looks like you) to the first night of auditions, Monday, August 29, PRELIMINARY VOICE AUDITIONS: Monday, August 29, 2011 Performing Arts Center, 3:45-5:00 pm (F/S) 5:15 6:30 pm (J/S) Sign up in the time slot for your grade level on the White Bldg. call board (next to the PAC). Sign ups will begin on, Monday, August 22, You must make arrangements to audition in the correct time slot for your year in school. At the auditions, we will ask you to sing the excerpt, on your own -- sing to the best of your ability, in your best voice, with energy and enthusiasm. Callbacks: Tuesday, August 31, 2010 Performing Arts Center, 3:40 pm until we finish Wednesday, September 1, 2010 Performing Arts Center 3:40 pm---until we finish
3 A list will be posted by Tuesday morning on the SHS Theatre Web Page with the names of people called back for additional auditions. There will be two days of callbacks and the website will list names for each day. If you are called back, you will be asked to sing and possibly read from the script. In the event that we need more time, there may be a final callback day on Thursday. The Cast List will be posted Thursday evening, September 1, All students who audition should check the cast list, as some of you will be cast even if not called back. The first rehearsal/readthrough is MANDATORY and will be ON FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 2, 2011 at 3:40 in the PAC. PLEASE READ CAREFULLY Auditions for SWEENEY TODD are Monday, August 29 - Thursday September 1, 2011 beginning at 3:40 pm on the Main Stage in the Performing Arts Center. Performances of the play are November 3 (daytime performance for incoming 8 th grade students) 4, 5, and 6, with a full cast MADATORY set strike call on Monday, November 7. Rehearsals begin September 1 and will continue through November 2. During the first 4-5 weeks, rehearsals are 3:45-6:15 pm Mon.- Fri. You will be expected to attend ONLY the rehearsals for the specific scenes, songs, musical numbers you are in, according to the rehearsal schedule. From approximately Oct. 10- Nov. 2, ALL cast members will attend ALL rehearsals, performances, and strike call. During PRODUCTION WEEK, which may begin as early as Monday, October 24 through Wed, Nov.2 rehearsals will extend into the evening. There will be a Saturday rehearsal on October1 for lead and featured roles. There will also be a MANDATORY rehearsal for the full cast on Monday, Oct 10 (Columbus Day). A MANDATORY all-day first full technical rehearsal will take place on Sunday, October 30. ALL CAST MEMBERS must attend this, as well as all other full tech. rehearsals. Before you audition, check ALL of these dates with your parental units and be sure that you do not have prior commitments, including doctor, dentist, orthodontist appointments, college visits, and/or other family travel plans.
4 When you audition for a show at Stevenson High School, you are auditioning for every role. It is the Director s job to cast you or not cast you as he/she sees fit. Sign up for an audition slot at the Fine Arts Call board located at the East entrance of the Performing Arts Center (east building). DO NOT LEAVE OPEN SLOTS. Sign up in the first available opening. All cast members are required to help in building sets, hanging lights, working on costumes, etc. Weekend crew days will be set up and you will be expected to participate in at least one full crew day. You may be asked to furnish portions of your costume. The budget does not always allow the luxury of providing all costume needs for each character. Additionally, if and when costumes are provided for you, you must take care not to damage your costumes. Any rented or borrowed costume or costume piece for which SHS is charged excessive wear and/or replacement fees, the student will be expected to cover that cost. So, please take care of all the garments you are issued for production. Scripts are available in the Library, beginning in August, for OVERNIGHT checkout. Please read the play prior to auditions; you ll feel more secure in the choices you make for your audition. Also - please adhere to the overnight checkout policy. If you do not, the library staff will inform me, and it may affect casting decision. (No kidding!) When you audition, remember to focus, project, be bold and have fun! If you have questions about the auditions, Mrs. Rawitz at: breakalegx4@me.com
