1 TECHNOLOGY - HEALTH AND SAFETY The Health and Safety Policy of the Technology department follows the guidelines produced by Norfolk County Council. These have been adopted by the Governing Body of Parkside School. Health and Safety procedures for Staff in the Technology Department.. The Technology DT teacher should be a qualified DT teacher.. Qualified in the use of machinery used in the workshop.. The FTT Co-ordinator holds a current "Food and Hygiene Certificate.. Regular discussions between teaching and non-teaching staff will allow the monitoring of all Health and Safety matters.. Staff training in the use of specific equipment with students takes place.. Certain items of equipment are used only by staff holding the necessary certificates of competence.. Both rooms have a First Aid cabinet.. Working machinery and electrical equipment have risk assessments for their use. Health and Safety procedures in the instruction of pupils in the Technology Department.. All students are instructed in Health and Safety throughout the Technology, DT and FTT courses. Health and Safety training is prominent throughout all teaching. For example achieved through role play, examples of dangerous practice and warning/safety signs.. Pupils are made aware of risks to themselves and to others of the misuse or improper use of equipment.. Hazard warning floor tape indicates hazardous areas.. Pupils are instructed in the responsible and safe use of equipment.. Medium Term Plans refer to risk assessment.. Pupils are instructed in the correct use and the health and safety implications of each new piece of equipment as it is introduced to them. Visual symbols Parkside School Technology Health and Safety Policy 1

2 warn of hot devices, eg glue guns.. Pupils are not permitted to use equipment until they are capable of using such equipment safely. In certain instances, they are allowed to use equipment under the direct supervision of a member of staff.. Pupils are taught to apply Health and Safety procedures to their use of equipment at home.. Safety data sheets for cleaning products used in food room are available.. There is a folder for COSHH in the medical room and a duplicate in the workshop near the door. Health and Safety in the Classroom. A fire drill is carried out at regular intervals.. Pupils attention is drawn to the location of fire exists.. Electricity and Gas services are protected with emergency stop devices. These are readily accessible and clearly marked. All pupils and staff are instructed in the use of emergency devices and equipment. Classroom Environment. Floors Ventilation. All floors have non-slip surfaces.. Substances spilt on the floor are cleared immediately.. Extractor fans are used in the DT workshop. Heaters are regularly checked for safe working.. Air conditioning unit serviced regularly. Storage. All equipment is stored at safe levels.. Hooks and shelves are checked at regular intervals. (Ladder available Parkside School Technology Health and Safety Policy 2

3 If appropriate.). High level shelves are only used for the storage of light items of equipment.. Equipment for student use is stored to ensure easy and safe access.. Equipment and materials with an element of risk in their storage are locked away.. Equipment with a risk of contamination is covered before storage.. Both rooms have step ladders for storage access.. Electrical equipment is stored in a dry, safe environment.. All food is stored in a clean cupboard, a refrigerator or a freezer as appropriate.. All food is stored in clean containers.. The food storage cupboard is cleared thoroughly at the end of each term and any out-of-date items disposed of.. All food items are checked for condition and date before being allowed in store. Notice Boards. All notice boards and display boards are securely fixed to the wall. Waste materials. Waste materials from the DT area are disposed of in identified containers.. A dedicated bin is used for general waste.. Hazardous waste - broken glass, metals etc are wrapped, stored in separate containers and subject to separate disposal procedures. Cleaning staff are informed of specific hazardous waste materials.. Cutting machines have dust extractors fitted. Working surfaces (a) (b) Working surfaces are kept clean and free from hazardous materials. Items of work are stored to prevent obstructing working surfaces. 4 Equipment and Tools. All equipment and dust extractors are inspected by outside contractors.. All electrical equipment is subject to regular electrical testing and has the appropriate test certificate.. All electrical equipment is checked monthly for the condition of flexes and plugs.. The pillar drill and band saw are checked termly by the DT Co-ordinator.. Electric cookers and gas cookers are regularly checked and any faults immediately reported for rectification by an outside agency who are contracted to do so.. The microwave ovens are subject to an annual check and inspection.. Guards are fitted to all equipment where required by law and where there is any risk to pupils or staff.. All tools and equipment are cleaned after use and before storage. Classroom work and activities Protective clothing. All pupils and staff are encouraged to wear sensible clothing and footwear in all Technology areas.. Rings/bracelets/necklaces are removed before work commences.. Long hair is tied back to prevent it falling into food or machines and hair nets are worn by upper school pupils. Aprons with secure ties or overalls are worn by all students when undertaking practical work.. Safety glasses are worn when appropriate and used when there is a danger of flying materials.. Gloves are used in the DT workshop when required for safety.. Gloves are used in the FT room for those pupils and staff wearing nail varnish. Parkside School Technology Health and Safety Policy 4

5 . Oven gloves are used to remove utensils from ovens.. Ear defenders are available for use with some equipment. Food First Aid V.D.U s. Pupils wash their hands using antibacterial hand wash and paper towels are used.. Pupils leaving the room during the lesson, for whatever reason, wash their hands before recommencing work with food.. D.T. and F.T.T have hand cleaners for removing oil/grease available and also for sensitive skins.. Injuries requiring first aid are dealt with by trained staff.. Coloured plasters are applied to cuts sustained in the food area.. Any dirty plasters are replaced before work is allowed in the food area.. All accidents are recorded and reported to the member of staff responsible for recording incidents.. Pupils and staff sit in comfortable positions and on correct chairs in order to minimise the likelihood of strains.. Adequate space is maintained around the VDU. Evaluation This policy is evaluated by the Technology Co-ordinator, Mrs Locksmith, Miss Moore and key technology staff. They will ensure that the policy reflects and meets current Health and Safety requirements and legislation.
