Philosophy and Objectives Continuous development of advanced communication technology in the past decade has resulted in not only rapid and complex economic, political, social and environmental changes, but also wide-ranging and borderless development of mass communication system at national, international and global level. This rapid development leads to academic and professional necessity to search for new modern knowledge in order to respond to needs for development by individuals as major resource for national development process and by organisations as sources of activities that promote systematic development. In addition, rapid increase of graduates and professional people in journalism and mass communication as compared to the past, has become a current trend, while education institutes that offer courses at doctoral level are still limited in Thailand. The Faculty of Journalism and Mass Communication is the first institute in Thailand that offers journalism courses at graduate level, and has produced many under graduates and graduates on mass communication to serve the society. The faculty recognizes the urgent need as mentioned above in the age of information, while Thammasat University has a policy to emphasize continuous creation of advanced knowledge and research in all branches of social science. With capacity and readiness in terms of personnel, places, equipment and cooperation with other higher education institutes and related organisations both in and outside of the country that facilitates operation and administration of higher education as stated in the 8 th National Higher Education Development Plan (B.E ), it is considered appropriate for the faculty to provide education at Doctor of Philosophy level with main objectives as follows: 1. To produce scholar graduates who academically excel in journalism and mass communication, with ethics, morality and ability to lead to social development at both national and international level. 2. To produce scholar graduates with academic knowledge and professional skills to develop education and research on journalism and mass communication both indepth and wide-ranging. 3. To develop and upgrade education on journalism and mass communication to be more in line with international standards, leading to academic cooperation and exchanges at high level. 5. Tuition Opening From Tuition Year 1999 onward.

Entry Requirements 1) Applicants must hold at least a Master Degree or equivalent from a higher education institute recognised by Thammasat University Council. 2) High-level executives and lecturers in a higher education institute will be taken as additional consideration. 3) Applicants must be recognised by at least two persons; applicants with research credits and professional credits should present them for additional consideration on the application day. Selected applicants must หายไปไหน 7. Applicants Selection Applicants are selected through tests, both written examination and interview, according to a proclamation of the university. 8. Modes of Studies 8.1 Multi-semesters: An academic calendar is divided into 2 semesters. Each semester is 16 weeks long. A summer semester may be opened to last at least 8 weeks and studying hours for each course will be increased to equal those in normal semester. 8.2 It is a full-time, normal semester, programme. 8.3 Studying in this programme consists of lecture, seminar, problem analysis, research and thesis. 8.4 A graduate Ph.D. (Mass Communication) must complete at least 69 credits which comprises of 30 credits for courses and 39 credits for thesis. 8.5 Students who have no background in Journalism and Mass Communication, or Communication Arts, must study 2 Basic Complimentary Subjects, that are Communication Research Method (JC 611) and Applied Theories of Mass Communication (JC 600). The assessment of these Basic Complimentary Subjects is divided into P (Passed) and N (Not Passed), which would not be counted in the programme. 8.6 Quality of this programme and teaching-learning according to standards set by the Ph.D. Programme Executive Committee will be ensured with teaching given by expert lecturers, use of research and studies findings published in academic journals, seminar that presents academic outcomes to the public, and theses must be published or at least the product or a part of the product must be accepted for publishing in academic journal or publication recognized in that subject area of concern. 8.7 Comprehensive Examination consists of theoretical examination and interview Students are eligible for the test when they have studies all required subjects in the Programme with GPA no less than Students must pass Comprehensive Examination within 7 semesters after being admitted to study in the Programme Students must pass Comprehensive Examination to be eligible to register for writing a thesis Students who fail Comprehensive Examination have a right to have another test only when they have GPA no less than Students must pass Comprehensive Examination with P level within 3 times of having the test otherwise they would be withdrawn from the Student Registration. 8.8 Students must pass examination of each subject with credit as required by the Programme within 6 ordinary semesters after being admitted to study in the Programme and need to have GPA no less than 3.00 for the compulsory courses and GPA no less than 3.00 for all courses. 8.9 Students must pass an examination on a dissertation outline within 1 year after passing Comprehensive Examination.
3 8.10 Students must take a test on at least one foreign language as required by the university and must pass the examination with P (Pass) level without counting credit before having thesis examination according to Thammasat University s Regulation concerning foreign language examination for post-graduate education B.E Course Duration Students must complete their studies within 10 semesters from the date of enrolment as students in this programme. 10. Enrolment Students must enrol in at least 6 credits, but not exceeding 12 credits, in each normal semester. 11. Assessment and Degree Requirements 11.1 Assessment The assessment is divided into 9 levels as follows: Level A A- B+ B B- C+ C D F Grade Credits are to be counted only for the courses that a student obtains S or no less than B Comprehensive Examination, and tests on foreign language and basic complimentary subjects are divided into 2 levels, that are P (Passed) and N (Not passed) Assessment of thesis is divided into 2 levels, that are S (Satisfied) and U (Unsatisfied) Graduation Students are eligible to be awarded Doctor of Philosophy (Mass Communication) when they: have studied subjects as required by the programme and observed all conditions set up by the Faculty, have GPA no less than 3.00 for each course and no less than 3.00 for the whole course, obtain P for Comprehensive Examination, obtain P for Foreign Language Test, and obtain S for the thesis. 12. Estimated Costs Costs for producing a post-graduate is approximately 50,000 Baht per year. 13. 6 Year 3 Semester 2 JC 900 Thesis 12 Course Description Prerequisite Subjects JC 600 Applied Theories of Mass Communication 3 Credits This subject studies and analyzes concepts, assumptions and theories related to communication process and changes of human behaviours from micro to macro level. At macro level, it focuses on analysis of mass communication structure and process both within and between various social systems. At micro level, it focuses on analysis of individuals process to communicate meanings, such as knowing and interpretation of messages, formation and changes of attitude, learning and understanding the balance of thought. This subject not only explores and analyzes findings from academic studies in communication, but also train students to have knowledge and understanding of techniques, methods and problems in the creation of social theories, so that they can apply them with communication science. Particularly, it focuses on defining concepts, definitions, assumptions, reasons and systematization of communication concepts. JC 611 Communication Research Method 3 Credits This subject studies methods for social research that are used to research on communication, focusing on applying quantitative methods in the analysis of communication process and effectiveness. This subject aims to provide students knowledge and capacity to come up with research questions, create assumption and theories, and determine definitions, concepts, techniques used in organizing and designing research work, random sampling, questionnaire designing, information analysis and interpretation and report writing. In addition, students will be trained on writing outline for practice methods and research outline. Compulsory Subjects JC 700 Epistemology of Social Sciences Research 3 Credits This subject studies metaphysics, epistemology and thinking methods in science and social science that would be used as foundation of research methodologies and discovery of knowledge, including being thinker and analyst, and genuine understanding of problems in journalism and mass communication, as academic and professional, together with thorough understanding of impacts and relations of the knowledge. JC 701 Social System and Communication Theories 3 Credits This subject studies philosophy, history and development of journalism and mass communication education by discussing and analyzing relations with various systems in society, such as economy, politics, culture, ecology, science and technology, for example. It focuses on linking theories with real situations to make students understand and be able to systematically explain communication problems and their solutions. JC 702 Seminar in Journalism and Mass Communication Theory 3 Credits This subject aims to make students understand journalism and mass communication theories in-depth, so that they have knowledge and capability to analyze various levels of the theories, being able to explain and discuss them by linking social phenomenon and use them to guide research that confirms or increases new knowledge that is different from existing one or creates a theory.
7 JC 703 Advanced Communication Research 3 Credits This subject studies research process and design, analyzing techniques and methods related to both quantitative and qualitative research. Students learn how to apply narrative statistics, referential statistics and high-level statistics with single variables, binary variables and multiple variables to verify assumptions of quantitative communication research and methods for making analysis and interpretation to present conclusions of knowledge from qualitative research. JC 704 Seminar in Quantitative Methods and Applications in Communication Research 3 Credits This subject provides students opportunities to discuss and share in class their views on research process that links mass communication theories and social phenomenon that leads to solutions or knowledge, and to analyze and appraise research findings on published communication in order to use as models for inspection or criticizing. JC 705 Seminar in Qualitative Methods and Applications in Communication Research 3 Credits This subject provides students knowledge about technical analysis and methods for qualitative research, focusing on giving them in-depth understanding and enabling them to use research methodologies to define problems and thought process to look for new knowledge in journalism and mass communication, and to analyze and appraise research findings on published communication in order to use as models for inspection or criticizing. Special Selected Subjects (1) International Communication JC 801 Comparative Analysis on International Media Systems 3 Credits This subject comparatively analyzes philosophy, theories, concepts, structures, systems and operation of mass media inside and outside of the country in details by explaining factors and limitations of these systems that have effects on policy that controls mass media system and other related problems and issues. JC 802 Media Technologies and International Communication 3 Credits This subject studies historical background and development of modern communication technology, techniques, methods and management that are applied in international mass communication systems and international communication organizations. JC 803 Seminar on Globalization and International Communication 3 Credits This subject studies globalization, focusing on problems that are related to international communication that cause social and cultural changes, including impacts towards global free market and deregulation in the Third World countries, and communication ethics and business at global level. (2) Political Communication JC 811 Communication and Political Thoughts 3 Credits This subject studies political philosophy, theories and concepts, evolution and structures in Thailand and other countries, including background and feedback from the mass media in order to analyze relations and influences between political process and mass media process. JC 812 Communication and Political Campaign 3 Credits
8 This subject studies communication process and tactics that are used in political campaign, such as political public relations and election advertisement, for instance, with focus on analysis of content, management and assessment of popular campaign, including public census. JC 813 Seminar in Thai Political Communication 3 Credits This subject studies problems related to political communication through discussion and analysis to find causes, factors, limitations, impacts, and mass media s role and dictation of political contents, including research and application, for development of political communication. (3) Special Selected Topics in Communication JC 891 Special Selected Topic 1 3 Credits JC 892 Special Selected Topic 2 3 Credits JC 893 Special Selected Topic 3 3 Credits Detailed description of the subjects: JC 891, JC 892 and JC 893 This subjects study particular topics related to communication, that are in the interest of and planned together by the student, course supervisor and advisory committee appointed by the Ph.D. Programme Director, particularly those consistent with the dissertation, with focus on in-depth research and development of a body of knowledge, guidelines and solutions to problems on journalism and mass communication, academically and professionally. Thesis JC 900 Thesis 39 Credits Students must write a thesis on a topic that creates a body of knowledge on journalism and mass communication through in-depth research process.
