As you will notice by perusing this semester s calendar of offerings, learning opportunities abound and I hope that you take full advantage of what this community has to offer. In the spirit of recognizing that MCLL is indeed a community a thriving organism that fosters the enrichment of its constituents I would like to take a moment and pay special recognition to our volunteers for their efforts and ongoing diligence. I am aware of the extent to which our office staff, study group moderators, committee members and Council members are the backbone of MCLL and allow it to thrive. To all of you who have chosen to commit yourselves to our community, and bring into it your love of learning, my profound thanks. As we enter MCLL s next quarter-century, I reiterate my encouragement of participation whether in MCLL activities or in broader School of Continuing Studies initiatives. Our experience tells us that the rewards of involvement, both to ourselves and to our communities, far outshine our efforts. Ultimately, it will be as a result of your investment that MCLL continues to flourish. I wish you all the best in your learning adventures. 10 CURRENT EVENTS ACTUALITÉ 232 South Africa: Apartheid and After Moderator: Peter Berry Time: Tuesday: 2:00 4:00 Duration: 8 weeks, beginning April 14 Study Group Style: C When apartheid was first introduced, racial segregation was common throughout the Western world. By the time it was consigned to the dustbin of history, South Africa was a pariah state and the White community was besieged. Nelson Mandela of the ANC and F. W. de Klerk of the National Party went on to achieve a miracle, averting a catastrophic ethnic and racial civil war. Unfortunately, hopes expressed in the Rainbow Nation rhetoric of 1994 have only been partially realized in the subsequent decades, and the future remains in doubt. 233 Current Affairs Through the Eyes of the Québec Media / L actualité: perspectives des media québecois Moderator: Anthony Frayne Time: Wednesday: 9:30 11:30 Duration: 10 weeks Study Group Style: A This bilingual study group focuses on coverage recently given in the Quebec media (printed, electronic) to trends or events, at home or abroad, in politics, economics and social change. ECONOMICS AND SOCIETY ÉCONOMIE ET SOCIÉTÉ 235 The Miracle of Singapore Moderator: Kuai-Yu (Paul) Leong Time: Wednesday, 2:00 4:00 Duration: 5 weeks beginning on May 20 Study Group Style: C In less than 50 years, Singapore went from being a bottom rank, third-world state to occupying the top echelon in the first world. This was achieved under the very able stewardship of Lee Kuan Yew. Can its success serve as an economic model for the developing world? Why does Warren Buffett s long-time righthand man, Charles Munger, admire Singapore and LKY so much? Let s explore. MCLL SPRING 2015 PROGRAM 11

12 ECONOMICS AND SOCIETY ÉCONOMIE ET SOCIÉTÉ 236 Economic Goals the World Should Set for 2030 Moderators: Gaetan Mongrain Anthony Frayne Time: Tuesday: 9:30 11:30 Duration: 10 weeks, beginning on April 21 Study Group Style: B This study group follows similar SGs held in recent years. Against a background of economic theory and the tools of fiscal and monetary policies, we will analyze what policies should be pursued by governments and central banks to achieve sustainable economic development--once the world economic crisis of the last seven years is really ended. Topics include debt management and quantitative easing, reduction of inequality worldwide, middle-class economics and transformation of energy policy. 237 Inequality, Merit and Mobility Moderator: Joseph Smucker Time: Thursday: 9:30 11:30 Duration: 7 weeks, beginning April 30 Study Group Style: C Inequality has been very much in the news since the recession of Most of us would probably argue that inequality is justified as long as it is based on merit and the channels of economic and social mobility remain open and fair. But the routes of mobility are changing while the definitions of merit, and equal opportunity are politically charged and subject to endless debate. Equally contentious are the rewards for merit. If, for example, one argues that it is the market that determines the forces at play, is it fair or just if one s reward is another s loss? 12 MCLL SPRING 2015 PROGRAM

13 HISTORY HISTOIRE 238 Contemporary Image of the Vikings Moderator: Ruth Allan-Rigby Time: Tuesday: 2:00 4:00 Duration: 10 weeks Study Group Style: B This study group will explore recent archaeological discoveries and new academic research that has changed our approach to the Viking era ( CE). We will examine various aspects of the Viking world: their raids, conquests, settlements, literature and culture. 239 Caribbean Island Nations Moderator: Peter Berry Time: Monday: 11:45 1:45 Duration: 8 weeks, beginning on April 13 Study Group Style: C Encountering these islands on his first voyage, Columbus saw them as a new Eden. That vision would be destroyed by demographic catastrophe, slavery and continuing exploitation over the centuries by buccaneers in silks and suits. Imperial powers would dominate the Caribbean for hundreds of years, and their political, economic and social impact continues today. The Spanish, French, English, Arawaks, Caribs, West Africans, East Indians, Syrians Chinese and others all played a role in creating these island nations. To understand the interplay between all these groups, we will focus on the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Jamaica and Trinidad. MCLL SPRING 2015 PROGRAM 13

14 HISTORY HISTOIRE 240 Borderland: The Ukraine Moderator: John Felvinci Time: Thursday: 2:00 4:00 Duration: 9 weeks Study Group Style: B The Ukraine is in the news every day. To understand the conflict between Ukraine and Russia, we have to understand history, e.g., it s important to know that the political entity of Ukraine did not really exist until recently. In this study group we will follow the history from the Golden Horde to Potemkin, from the Cossack Hetmans to the Holodomor, from the Polish-Lithuanian rule to the socialist republic, and from the Holocaust to today. On the way we will meet Peter the Great, Mazeppa, Catherine the Great, Stalin and Hitler, among others. Participants are required to make 20-minute presentations. 241 The Railways of Northern Ontario Moderators: Andrew Macdougall Robbie Robinson Time: Tuesday: 11:45 1:45 Duration: 10 weeks Study Group Style: B Andrew and Robbie continue to move west in their exploration of Canada s railway history, this year reaching Northern Ontario, including: Algonquin Park, Sudbury, Moosonee, Sault Ste Marie, Lake Superior and Thunder Bay. Join us as we explore Canada s history & geography and engineering wonders through its railways. Presentations will be supplemented by videos to help us relive the glory days of steam. The study group will include an outing, by train, to Ottawa, once a major railway hub. Participants will be expected to give presentations based on material (books, pamphlets & magazine articles) which will be loaned to them. 15 242 Matriarchy to Patriarchy Moderator: Thomasine Mawhood Time: Thursday: 9:30 11:30 Duration: 10 weeks Study Group Style: A Why are women still being abused, denigrated and excluded? For the answer we must go back to the time of Matriarchy when women were equal to men. The gradual shift to Patriarchy lead to 500 years of witch-burning in Europe, and the abuse continues. The Crone by Barbara G. Walker, available at Paragraph bookstore, approximately $18-$ The Evolution of Rabbinic Judaism - Part 2 Moderator: Elie Schwartz Time: Thursday: 11:45 1:45 Duration: 10 weeks Study Group Style: C The Judean king Josiah ( BCE) instituted major reforms by making the Solomon Temple in Jerusalem the centre of religious worship. Following the destruction of that temple (587 BCE) and then the Second Temple (70 CE), it became imperative if Judaism was to survive that it transform itself. It did so by creating a new mainstream form of Judaism, still practised, known as Rabbinic Judaism. We will explore its roots, legitimacy, strengths, weaknesses, and its fascination for the production of an uniquely rabbinic literature or codex which, arguably, has given birth to the proverbial Jewish lawyer, the Jewish comedian and, above all else, the Jewish scholar. Just like the rabbis who attempted to solve fundamental issues of faith versus reality, participants will select a number of subjects for discussion e.g., Is monotheism superior to polytheism? Why do evil people prosper while the righteous suffer? 244 History of Modern Iran Moderator: Soheila Raesinezhad Time: Tuesday: 11:45 1:45 Duration: 5 weeks, beginning April 14 Study Group Style: D The goal of this 5-week study group is to explore the rich cultural history of Iran and to appreciate this dynamic modern society. We hope this experience will help to counteract the largely one-sided image in the western press, with the usual cast of authoritarian mullahs, black-clad women and bomb-making terrorists. MCLL SPRING 2015 PROGRAM 15

Through film and discussion we will learn about the Victorian era and discover the impact Charles Dickens had on his own world and on pop culture. Over 10 weeks we will review Dombey and Son, a lesser known novel, but one of his greatest nonetheless, written at the peak of his career. Be prepared for a fun and informative experience. What does this literary taste reveal about us? Are detective stories and murder mysteries really literature? These vital questions and other related topics will be discussed, and possibly even settled, each week.
