1 Join the Five Little Monkeys and discover the joys of reading! Invite your friends, classmates, scout troop, and teammates to join your club. Meet once a month or more frequently to talk about the books you read. Everyone can read the same book and discuss what they liked and didn t like about it, or you can take turns talking about all the different books you ve read and recommend your favorites. Use the materials in this kit for your Five Little Monkeys : Tips Use these pointers to help set up your club and choose books. Bookmarks Don t lose your place use a bookmark! Pass these out to your club members. Look for the special bookmark to announce the next meeting of your Five Little Monkeys. Book Log Keep track of the books you read. You can have one sheet for the group, or give everyone a copy so they can list and rate the books they read. How many books can you read in a week? A month? A year?! Stickers Wear these stickers proudly! Maybe new kids will see them and want to join your Five Little Monkeys! The more, the merrier! 2 Tips Invite friends to join your club. You can ask kids in your class, players on your sports team, and members of your scout troop. Pick a meeting spot. The school or public library is a good place to meet. Consider a local park or playground if the weather permits. You might meet at a different member s house each time, or at your local bookstore. Ask parents of members to take turns sponsoring your club by providing supervision and a snack. In Five Little Monkeys Reading in Bed, the monkeys read all different kinds of books scary stories, funny stories, and everything in between. In your club, read books from different genres historical fiction, humor, fantasy, mystery, biography, and nonfiction. Ask your teacher, librarian, or bookseller to help you come up with a good list of books appropriate for your age and reading level. Bring the list to your meeting and decide which books you d like to read for your club. Be sure to pick books from different genres and discuss which you like best. Decide how often your club will meet. Be sure to give members enough time to read the selected book before the next meeting. Will you meet once a month? Once every two months? Every two weeks? Here are some questions to ask the group after you read each book: What genre is this book? Who are the main characters? What three adjectives would you use to describe each one? What are the main events that happen in the story? Did any elements of the plot or the characters surprise you? How does this story compare with others you ve read in this genre? What was your favorite part of the story? Your least favorite? Be sure to add each book you read to your Book Log and give it an overall rating.
