1 First Look TM Curriculum for Preschoolers We want preschoolers to take a first look at who God is and understand... God made me. God loves me. Jesus wants to be my friend forever. October 20/21, 2012 Basic Truth: God loves me. Key Question: Who helps me do big things? Bottom Line: God helps me do big things. Memory Verse: We have the Lord our God to help us and to fight our battles for us! 2 Chronicles 32:8, NLT Bible Story: God helps me when I m scared. David and Goliath 1 Samuel 17:1-50 Here s an overview of what you ll be teaching in 3s 5s this week. Make It Fun (Choose one or all of these activities.) Beanbag Game How Tall Are You? Make It True 20 minutes into service, bring children to the Kidville Park Worship Room Make It Stick (Choose as many of these activities as you like.) Memory Verse: We have the Lord our God to help us and to fight our battles for us! 2 Chronicles 32:8, NLT Bible Story: God helps me when I m scared. David and Goliath 1 Samuel 17:1-50 Make It Fun (Introductory Activities, 15 minutes) Prepare to offer one or more of the following activities as your 3-, 4-, or 5-year-olds arrive. Let one or two teachers lead activities in different areas of the room while another teacher greets parents and kids at the door. 1. Beanbag Game What You Need: Several small beanbags and six to eight large plastic cups. What You Do: Stack the cups on top of each other to make a pyramid. Have children line up in a single file line and give each child a chance to knock down the cups by throwing the beanbag. When the cups are knocked down, stack them up again for the next child. What You Say: Great job! You all were very good at that game! Today we are going to hear a story from the Bible about a young boy who had very good aim just like you do! He did something AMAZING with God's help. Are you ready to hear our TRUE story from the Bible? 3. How Tall Are You? What You Need: White art paper, markers, a few tape measures, and tape. What You Do: Measure out 9 feet of white art paper. Write the name Goliath in large print across the top of the paper. Roll it up and set it aside. Show the children how to use the tape measures to measure things around the room. They can measure dolls, blocks, a table, crayons, their shoes, each other whatever they wish. Meanwhile, you will be measuring the children one at a time. Mark their height on the paper and write their name after it. Curriculum for 3-5-year-olds 2012 The rethink Group, Inc. 3 Once you have everyone measured, gather the children around to look at the paper. Point out each child s height and have them raise their hand as you call their name. What You Say: At the start of the activity: These are called tape measures. You can use them to see how tall or how long something is. See? You just pull it out and then look at the number. I m going to use this one to see how tall you are. You can use these to measure things around the room. (Point to the paper) This is (name of child), and this is (name of child), and this is (call out each child s name as you point to their mark). But then there s this one. Oh, my! This mark is SOOOOO much taller than the rest of you. See? It s HUGE! It says Goliath at the top. Guess what? There really is a man named Goliath in our Bible story today. And he was REALLY big! Make It True (Large Group, 15 minutes) After children have participated in Make It Fun, gather them in the Kidville Park Worship Room for a large group time that includes interactive worship, introductory sketch and Bible story. 4 Make It Stick (Application Activities, 25 minutes) These activities are designed to help preschoolers understand and remember today s Bible story and Bottom Line. Offer as many of the following activities as Your time, facilities, resources, and leadership allow. You may want to lead one activity at a time. Or offer two activities at once and allow half the kids to participate in each, then switch groups and repeat the activities. 1. On the Stone What You Need: Five large pieces of gray or brown construction paper, scissors, and clear contact paper. What You Do: Lead children around the stones, hopping from one to the next while repeating the memory verse. What You Say: Can you follow me and jump from stone to stone with me? Let s count how many stones there are. One (jump), two (jump), three (jump), four (jump), five (jump)! Five stones! This time when we jump, I want you to repeat the memory verse with me. Ready? We have (jump and repeat) the Lord (jump and repeat) our God (jump and repeat) to help us (jump and repeat) and to fight (jump and repeat) our battles (jump and repeat) for us (jump and repeat), 2 Chronicles 32:8. Super jumping! Our verse this month tells us that God is always with us and helps us when we need Him. He was there to help David in the story today when he fought Goliath. God is amazing! I love knowing that God is always there to help me! Who can help me do big things? (Pause.) You are right! God can help me do big things! 2. David s Story What You Need: Large white poster board, crayons, What You Do: Divide the children into small groups of four to six children. Give each group a poster board and crayons. Encourage the kids to gather around all sides of the poster board, either at a table or on the floor. After you briefly review the Bible story, instruct the children to draw pictures of things from the story. The pictures will be going in all different directions. That is okay and all part of the fun. (Tip: Ideas of what to draw this week include a young David with a lunch bag, David talking to King Saul, David choosing five rocks, a slingshot, Goliath etc.) Curriculum for 3-5-year-olds 2012 The rethink Group, Inc. 5 What You Say: David did a VERY brave thing in today s. What did he do? (Pause.) Yes, he faced a very scary giant. Who helped David fight that giant? (Pause.) Absolutely. God did. And, God can help you too! Who helps me do big things? God helps me do big things! 3. Play-Doh Stones What You Need: Play-Doh for each child, plastic Ziploc sandwich bags, Stones (from the Activity Page on the Web site), and Avery labels #5160 or the equivalent. What You Do: Give each child some Play-Doh. Instruct the kids to knead it and roll it into small balls. Allow each child to make five balls. Place each child s balls of Play- Doh in a plastic bag with a sticker on it for him or her to take home. What You Say: At the start of the activity: Do you remember how many stones David threw at Goliath? (Pause.) Yes! He threw five stones at Goliath. Lets count them. (Counting on your fingers as you count aloud) One, two, three, four, five! Great job! We are going to make stones out of the Play-Doh. Can you use your hands to make stones out of the Play- Doh? At the end of the activity: Your stones look awesome! You can take these home and tell your family about the BIG thing that God helped David do! Who helps me do big things? 6 Make It Real (Small Groups, 5 minutes) Make It Real is designed to help preschoolers understand how the Bottom Line applies to them. They ll discuss real-life experiences and share prayer requests. Divide kids into small groups of about five to eight children with each leader. Ideally, assign the same small group leader to the same group of preschoolers for the entire year. Small Group Time What You Need: Paperclip Memory Verse Card in your Bible at 2 Chronicles 32:8. SMALL GROUP LEADER (SGL): Raise your hand if you ve ever been scared of something. (Raise your hand and look around.) Me too! One time I was really scared of (name something). All of the men in our Bible story today were scared of big, mean Goliath, but not David. David knew that God would help him fight his battles. That s what our Bible verse tells us too. Let s say our verse together. CHILDREN and SGL: We (point to chest with both thumbs) have the Lord our God (both hands pointing up) to help (right arm up as a muscle) us and to fight (left arm up as a muscle) our battles (cross arms in an X in front of your body with closed fists) for us (point to chest with both thumbs), 2 Chronicles 32:8 (hold out hands like a book). (Repeat the verse several times.) SGL: Yes! God says He will fight our battles for us. That must have been why David was so brave. David knew that God would help him do big things. God wants to help US do big things too. Who helps you do big things? God helps me do big things. Let s make a list of what scares us, and then we can ask God to help us be brave. Being brave is a BIG thing! (Write down the children s responses. Remember to print the words so the children can recognize their names and letters. Mention their list when you pray together.) SGL: We ve made our list. Now it s time to pray. Let s close our eyes. Prayer Dear God, sometimes things scare us, like (name the things from the list). Please help us to be brave like David.
