1 MEET THE HUSBAND Written by David Dalton & Chad Schnackel Pages: 5+ Characters: Brandon, 30+ Cassie, 30+ Tom 30+ Synopsis: Brandon has a romantic rendezvous with Cassie at an outdoor cafe. Cassie seemed to think it was a good idea to invite her husband to join them. 2 EXT - SIDEWALK CAFE -DAY Brandon is seated at a cafe table enjoying a glass of wine. Cassie, his girlfriend enters and gives Brandon a brief, yet passionate, kiss. She sits. I was beginning to worry you weren t going to make it. I know you have to get back to work, so I went ahead and ordered a Vanilla ice mocha for you. How sweet. You know that s my favorite. Oh, I don t have to be back at work. I took the afternoon off. You? Playing hooky? That s not like you. I know. And it s all your fault. My fault? Yes. Ever since I met you, I ve become exceptionally adventurous. So, I thought we could go for a walk through the city park, then go see a movie or...maybe...go to your place and pick up where we left off last night. Wow, and this behavior is somehow my fault? Why do I not feel guilty? Oh, there s one more thing. I invited Tom to join us. What? For lunch, that s all. Brandon is suddenly speechless. What? Relax, I told him I was having lunch with you and your girlfriend Joanne.

3 Are you crazy? When did you think it was good idea for me meet your husband? You re upset? Well, yes. What were you thinking? And what do you mean Joanne. Joanne s not here. I haven t seen Joanne in three months. How are you gong to explain that to him? Tom enters the cafe and gives Cassie a kiss on the cheek. Tom, this is Brandon. Joanne s boyfriend. Brandon stands to shake Toms hand. They sit. Hey Tom, How are you? I m good. I see you guys already started without me. Yes, I don t have much time before I have to get back to work. (winks at Brandon) That s okay, I m just going to have one martini and I have to go to a meeting. (to Brandon) So, where s your girlfriend? Joanne? Uh...she Joanne had to go back to the hospital, She s on call. She s a Doctor? Yes, yes...a Doctor.

4 Really, what kind of Doctor? A, you know...just a...regular old doctor. Don t be coy, Brandon. Joanne is actually head of Endocrinology at Keller Memorial. Well, Brandon. It s sound like you got yourself quite a catch there. Yes, I do. Cassie squeezes Brandon s leg under the table Ahhhhh. Yes, yes, I m a very lucky man. Well, too bad I missed her. You know, we re having a party this Saturday. I would love to have you and Joanne come. Oh, that s very kind of you. Uh, I m not sure if I can, but I ll check my schedule...we, we will check our schedules. Cassie s cell phone beeps. (genuinely concerned) Oh no. It looks like there s a crisis at work. I m so sorry, I have to get right back to the office. Office? I thought you...you know... Yes, I know, but this is an emergency, a real emergency. That s alright, honey. Me and Tom will just have to go Mono a Mono

5 (to Brandon) Sorry, really sorry. She darts off. There is an awkward moment of silence. Tom smiles at Brandon and he smiles back. Tom leans back in his chair and fold his arms. The moment goes on a little longer. So, Tom. How long have you been married to Cassie. Tom doesn t respond. He just stares at Brandon with a forced smile. Joanne and I, we were...i mean, we ve been together for about 4 years now. Tom is still smiling, almost maniacal, only it becomes more strained and he begins to nod his head. Cassie tells me you re the head of an architectural firm. Tom is almost frozen. The moment stretches painfully. I should probably get back to my... Brandon begins to stand when Tom suddenly grabs his arm and pulls him back down to his seat. I don t know you, Brandon. And you don t know me. But there s something I gotta say. Look, Tom, it s not what you think... Yes, it is! It is exactly what I think! Tom, I can explain... Tom suddenly begins to cry. Cassie is cheating on me! I know she is!

6 Oh, wow, Tom. You know this for a fact? Yes, I know. She has always been good, caring and attentive. Everything a man would expect from his wife. But lately... Lately? She s been happy, damn it! Happier than she s ever been and I know damn well It s not because of me! If I ever find out who s been making her happy, I will kill him. Tom cries uncontrollably. I just want things the way they were. Tom, I don t think I m really qualified to give you any advice on marriage. I m a complete romantic moron. Maybe you should see a marriage counselor. (composing himself) Sorry, Brandon. I sensed you were very happy with Joanne. You have that, you know, confident, satisfied look about you. A man who is still in love. I just thought you might know how I could get that old romance back with Cassie. Okay, look,...just take a look at what you re doing now and...i don t know, stop doing it. Tom suddenly appears to have an epiphany. Yes! That s it! So simple. I just need to remember how it was when we first met. He gets ups from his seat as if on a new mission.

7 Thank you, Brandon. Thank you. Now make sure you and Joanne come to the party. I insist. Yes, we ll be there. Both of us. Excellent. See you then. Please, not a word of this to Cassie. Of course not. Have a good day, Tom. CUT TO: END
