Lyndsey Jefford PSHE Coordinator SRE
I know that for many people this topic raises many concerns. I have seen the faces of parents when we let them know we begin Sex Ed in year 1! This meeting is to reassure you that we DO NOT teach your 5 year olds all about the birds and the bees! I hope to show you that the title of SRE covers a wide range of topics and we teach everything at a very age appropriate level.
Aims For This Session To explore why we teach sex and relationships education To explore how the teaching progresses from Year 1 to Year 6 To help parents to feel confident to answer any questions their child/children will ask. To address any fears parents might have with this topic.
Government Guidelines The guidelines suggest that SRE in primary schools should ensure that all pupils: Develop confidence in talking about feelings and relationships. Are able to name parts of the body and describe how their bodies work. Can protect themselves and ask for help and support. Are prepared for puberty.
Why teach SRE? Research has shown that good SRE helps to delay rather than accelerate the age at which young people start to become sexually active. Starting in KS1 and developing it throughout the primary years enables children to acquire information and knowledge, form positive attitudes and values, and develop the skills necessary for effective communication. This will lead to responsible decision making and positive behaviour in the context of a healthy family life, loving relationships and respect for others.
Earlsfield s SRE Curriculum. As a school we have chosen to use the living and growing programme made by channel 4. All areas of SRE are covered using real life video clips, animated sequences, discussion and child friendly worksheets. As a school we have adapted the scheme of work to meet the needs of our children. The scheme of work and curriculum has been adapted to suit the needs of the children at Earlsfield. The changes were made in conjunction with parents at a workshop.
Key Stage 1 In KS1 the focus is on growing up and differences. The differences and similarities between people are explored and celebrated lb td through h a series of short films. In Year 1 the children look at how male and female animals and people look different and the similarities they have. Through looking at mummy animals the children will understand d that t it is the female in all species that have the babies! At the end of the unit they will be introduced to the proper p names for parts of their body including stomach, penis and vagina.

Year 2 In Year 2 we re visit the proper names for body parts and talk about growing up. They then begin to think about how they have changed since they were a baby and how they think they will change as they continue to grow. The children are reminded that it is the female that carries a baby. b Through h cartoon images the children look at how a baby develops in the womb and throughout pregnancy. We also discuss their own experiences as many of the children will have seen members of their family who are pregnant.

Year 3 The teaching begins by recapping what the children learnt in KS1. The classes are encouraged to look at themselves as babies and discuss how they have changed emotionally and physically. The main focus of Year 3 SRE is puberty. The children are taught and are encouraged to identify the changes that t will happen to them. Many children will use these sessions to express any fears and concerns they may have regarding this topic. There is a question box in each class where the children can anonymously yask questions.

Year 4 Puberty is again the starting point but now the focus is on how it is related to sexual development. Menstruation (the process of) is taught through a series of video clips and worksheets. Through experience I know that many of our girls will start their period in year 5, it is therefore vital that all the girls are aware of this important change and why it happens. To allow the girls il the confidence to ask questions they are taught in single sex groups. The boys are taught about the menstrual cycle but clearly they need less detail! Positive loving relationships and differences within families and relationships ea psaeasod are also discussed.
Year 5 Puberty is again revisited iitd as many of our children will begin puberty when they are 9 and 10. Masturbation and the importance of personal hygiene are discussed as again these are issues being dealt with by the children at this age. For the some of the sessions the children are taught in single sex groups allowing the teacher to address any questions the children may need the answers to. The next step is to understand the process of fertilization. The class is shown a video showing how babies are made including animation of sexual intercourse.
The need for strong adult relationships between people who are contemplating having a baby is explored as part of this. The children are then taught how the foetus develops including discussion of lifestyle of mum: keeping healthy. The next step is to sequence the events of birth. The children are shown a video clip of a baby being born at this point.

Year 6 The SRE teaching that occurs in this year group is very flexible and mainly led by the children. It is our chance as teachers to address any misconceptions the children hld may have about puberty and sex and allow them to ask any questions, again using the anonymous question box. The questions raised, and the discussions that then begin are often regarding contraception. This is a key area of learning within year 6. Personal hygiene is again revisited and the importance of this is discussed. The girls within Year 6 create leaflets and information regarding periods. This shows the teachers how well they understand their bodies but are also lovely for the Year 5 girls to have at the beginning of the year.
Relationships, peer pressure and the law are all areas that will be addressed within SRE in year 6. The classes are encouraged to investigate how sex is portrayed in the media, in the music they listen to etc, and think about how this influences decisions they make and will continue to make. This year we have also introduced a body confidence lesson for all year 6 pupils.
And Finally... I hope you have seen that the SRE your child/children will receive at Earlsfield is extensive and age appropriate. You have the right to withdraw your child from SRE. They will spend the session with another class. Any questions please feel free to ask.
