Walk Don t Run to help the animals of Monterey County. Together we can help to assure compassionate and humane treatment of all animals in our community. Wag n Walk 2016 Team Captain Kit Welcome Team Captain! We are delighted that you are joining us as a Team Captain for The SPCA s Wag n Walk 2016! Thank you for taking the first step towards making our event a great success. This kit is designed to provide you with the tools you need to make your team s experience fun, successful and rewarding!
This Team Captain kit will take you through the following four steps to create a successful Wag n Walk team: As a Team Captain, you are a powerful force; helping the homeless, abused and neglected animals of Monterey County. A Team Captain s job is to motivate and encourage others to join your team and promote Wag n Walk, whether it is with co-workers, friends or family. Once the team is in place, the Team Captain also acts as the key liaison between their team and The SPCA for Monterey County. Step 1 Set a Fundraising Goal Set a dollar goal for each of your team members to raise donations for the animals of Monterey County. Set your team member s goal high but make it realistic; you don t want them to feel overwhelmed. Try having each team member raise at least $200 they can do it, it s easy! Step 2 Recruit Team Members All you have to do is ask. Recruit your family, friends, co-workers and neighbors to join your team. When you find new team members, ask them to invite their family, friends, coworkers and neighbors. You will be surprised how quickly your team grows! Step 3 FUNdraise! Share your enthusiasm and excitement with your team as you strive together to reach your fundraising goal. Be sure your team members are well prepared to reach their goal (use this kit for ideas and tools) and communicate often! Step 4 Walk, Follow Up and Celebrate your SUCCESS! Walk, enjoy and reward your team members. You and your team are making a difference in hundreds of animals lives throughout Monterey County! Let s get started!!
Step 1: Set a Fundraising Goal Wag n Walk is a pledge-based event and reaching our fundraising goal depends on participants to raise money from their friends, family, neighbors and co-workers. Set the bar high! We encourage each team member to raise at least $200. This is an EASY goal if team members follow a few of our fundraising tips found in Step 3. If you really want to challenge your team, set the fundraising goal even higher. Remember, the money raised is going to help The SPCA assure compassionate and humane treatment of all animals in our community and the more money you raise, the faster we can help those animals in need. Let your team know that there are incentives involved in raising money for Wag n Walk 2016! Top fundraisers will be eligible to receive a variety of prizes and the more they raise, the better the prize! Wag n Walk 2016 Incentive Prizes Wag n Walk 2015 Commemorative T-Shirt $100 - $199 Incentive Prizes will be given at the $200+, $350+, 750+, $1,000+, $2,500 & $5,000 fundraising level. Participants raising 500+ will receive an invitation to the 2016 Wag n Walk Champions Lunch. Set a high goal and go for it! You can do it!!
4 Quick Step 2: Recruit Team Members Here are a few easy recruiting ideas! Ask everyone you know to be a team member, including friends, family, neighbors and co-workers. Once they have signed on, ask them to invite their friends, family, neighbors and co-workers. Keep building your team! Utilize the great features of on-line registration at to send messages to friends, family and co-workers with a link to visit your personal webpage and join your team. We are here to help if you have any questions, just give us a call. Talk about the event and your team to everyone you meet. If you are excited about Wag n Walk, it will show and your apparent enthusiasm will affect everyone around you. Ask your supervisor to support you or join your team, and then let everyone know and encourage others to do the same. Ask The SPCA to help you hold a team kick-off party. Host a party either as a family gathering or a lunch session during work hours to sign up team members. We can help you by providing a Wag n Walk presentation to help get everyone on board! As You Build Your Team Be sure you have all of the information to register each team member. Encourage each walker to raise at least $200! Challenge them to AIM HIGH! Distribute copies of the Sample Fundraising Letter and for team members to copy and send. E- mail is fast, inexpensive and easy way to get the word out and raise money! Send weekly updates or make weekly phone calls with the latest Wag n Walk information, fundraising ideas and success stories from your team members. Encourage your team members to collect and turn in donations in time to be eligible for the Top Team prizes. See Timeline for details. 4 Quick Tips for Submitting Funds 1. Write your name and your team name on the Memo line of each check, do the same thing for any checks sponsoring a registered team member. 2. Monitor your progress on your personal website or keep track of contributions on your contribution form. Send the checks in with the printable donation form from your personal website to ensure they are properly credited to you and your team members. 3. It s a great idea to make a photocopy of everything before you send it to keep accurate records! 4. Mail your checks to: The SPCA for Monterey County Attn: Wag n Walk P. O. Box 3058 Monterey, CA 93942
Copy Step 3: FUNraise! Ask, ask and ask again! Remember you are asking for The SPCA and the animals and not for Copy yourself. and share The moment these you easy limit fundraising who you ask, you ideas limit with the amount your you team raise! to reach your goal. Host a fundraising party! Ask Work attendees hard to pledge and have their support. fun! Create a buddy system. Ask someone who cannot walk to help you collect donations. Bring your fundraising letter and Wag n Walk information EVERYWHERE! Ask one person a day to sponsor you in the Wag n Wag. Suggest friendly competition between team members. Set weekly or monthly goals to beat and recognize the team member who reaches it first. Give something up movie, manicure or dinner at an expensive restaurant and contribute what you would have spent to Wag n Walk. Ask your friends to contribute to Wag n Walk instead of buying a gift for your birthday, anniversary or any occasion! Find out if your company has a matching gift program. Matching gifts can double your team money! Who to Ask? Come up with a list of everyone you have supported either by purchasing a product at their store, using a service that they offer or sending graduation or wedding shower gift. NOW is the time to ask everyone you know to support you! Send an or a letter to EVERYONE in your address book Friends, family and co-workers Favorite local restaurant owner Any favorite local shop that you frequent often Your doctor, dentist or lawyer Your teammates or gym buddies Your hairdresser or barber People at your place of worship Raise $200 in a week! Day 1: $25 Sponsor Yourself Day 2: $40 Ask 2 relatives for $20 Day 3: $45 Ask 3 friends for $15 Day 4: $40 Ask 4 Co-workers for $10 Day 5: $25 Ask 5 neighbors for $5 Day 6: $25 Ask your spouse / partner Day 7: $200 Celebrate your accomplishment!
Write a Fundraising Letter or First introduce your primary motivation to be involved with The SPCA for Monterey County. Share your personal experiences with animals; use your love of animals to help you fundraise. Invite them to come aboard and contribute to your fundraising goal. This is the goal that you set and it is a goal that you want to beat! Help the reader by explaining exactly how they can help you. Share with them that you would like them to give as much as they can or feel comfortable with. Every dollar raised counts towards your goals and will directly benefit the animals of Monterey County. Reference exactly where the money will go in paragraph three. The SPCA is an independent, donor supported humane society that has been serving the animals and people of Monterey County since We shelter homeless, neglected and abused pets and livestock. We provide humane education and numerous other invaluable services throughout the community. To learn more about what The SPCA does for the animals and our community, please go to our website at Suggest a due date and request that they make their donations through a check or on-line directly to you or The SPCA. Tell them if you don t hear from them within 2 or 3 weeks that you will follow up with a personal call as a reminder. Then thank them for supporting the cause and the mission; to assure compassionate and humane treatment of all animals in our community. Dear, Sample Fundraising Letter and I am walking (or with my team) in the Wag n Walk this spring to help raise awareness and money for all of the homeless, neglected and abused animals and livestock of Monterey County. I have committed to raising $, and I cannot do it without the help of people like you. I would like you to support my efforts on behalf of The SPCA. Please be as generous as you are comfortable being, every dollar raised will directly benefit the hundreds of disadvantaged animals in our community. Each year, The SPCA of Monterey County receives over 5,000 lost or unwanted pets, horses and livestock at their shelter; their clinic staff performs over 3,500 spay and neuter surgeries; their wildlife center staff rescues/receives over 2,000 injured and orphaned wild animals; they provide humane education to over 2,000 children and adults; their humane officers investigate over 600 neglect and cruelty cases throughout Monterey County and they have nearly 29,000 volunteer hours donated. I am ready to be a part of this worthwhile cause. Will you join me? Checks should be made payable to The SPCA for Monterey County. All donations for Wag n Walk are tax deductible as charitable contributions. Please send contributions to: Team Member name and address, who will then forward them on to The SPCA or go to to donate on-line at my personal webpage. I d love to hear from you by xx/xx/16, if not I ll be sure to follow up. On behalf of The SPCA and the animals, thank you in advance for your support. Sincerely,
