1 3/29/2008 Andre Pierre -- Andrew Peter Family Tree 1 Introduction by: David Peter The Andrew Peter Family Book has been a long time in the making. Literally hundreds of people helped make it a reality. All of those who did work before Bro. Rene and myself, those who answered our letters, those who sent information or pictures, plus those who helped in any way are given a sincere thanks. This book would not be a reality without the efforts of Brother Rene' Bouillon of St. Meinrad Archabbey, St. Meinrad, Indiana, who tracked down most of the information found in the book. I believe that no one knows as many members of the extended family the way he does. I wish to thank my family and my parents, Mary (Reinhart) & Raymond Peter, for their encouragement, patience, and support. The purpose of this book is simple. It is to identify the descendants of Andre Pierre. He came to America in 1842 and changed his name to the American form of Andrew Peter sometime after that. The Peter family has grown rapidly over the years. The family is too large for this book to be much more than a listing of families. A lot of detail is purposely left out so the work could be completed. The family treasures and pictures in the front should make reading the book a more personal experience. I also believe that everyone who opens these pages will be surprised to find someone who is an unknown cousin. As you scan these pages you will quickly discover that this book covers more than the Peter name. The families of John Joseph & Elizabeth Justine (Peter) Evrard as well as James & Victoria (Peter) Rogier are major portions of the family. I hope that the Gravet, Goffinet, Evrard, Rogier, Etienne, Meunier, Humbert, Graves, Rhodes, Hagedorn, Jarboe, Drouard, Dumoulin, Schreder, Chopot, Broyles, Hubbs, Dupont/DuPont, Flamion, Bouillon, Bruggenschmidt, Holman, Delaisse, Theis, Eigel, Cassidy, Lemaire, Wolf, Ward, and Marchand families will enjoy learning about their extended family. All these names, plus many more, are among the over 5,000 names found here. With the family as large as it is, I must apologize for the inevitable mistakes, errors, and omissions that will be found in the book. Some are my typing mistakes and some are the result of conflicting information. Please don't be too critical. If corrections or additions can be supplied, please do so. The text is intended to be a living document that will be maintained for a long time. Missing information will be added when received. The general organization of the book is as follows: Introduction Andrew Peter Family Summary Family Treasures Family Photos Details of : - the family of James & Anna (Goffinet) Peter 1 - the family of Elizabeth (Peter) & John J. Evrard 2 - the family of Victoria (Peter) & James Rogier 4 - the family of John Baptist & Victoria (Etienne) Peter 6 - the family of August & Catherine (Meunier) Peter 7 As you read the text you will encounter numbers (codes) in front of each family. The family codes are intended to allow readers to quickly scan the text and identify the portion of the family tree being detailed. Please interpret the numbers as shown below for Br. To avoid disclosing information inadvertently, most adoptions in the family are not shown at all. Please note that within the following family listings, the place of birth under the heading 'Where' is inconsistent. Sometimes it represents the place of birth and at other times the home address of the parents.

3 3/29/2008 Andre Pierre -- Andrew Peter Family Tree 3 ANDREW PETER FAMILY SUMMARY Andre Pierre or Andrew Peter born Mar 28,1808 at Jamoigne/les Bulles, Belgium, died June 26,1893 at Leopold, Indiana. married Marie Elizabeth Gravet on February 5,1832. She was born March _,1805 at Jamoigne/les Bulles, Belgium and died March 12,1882 at Leopold Children Born/Baptized Where Died 1 James or Jacques Dec 13,1834 Jamoigne, Belgium May 30, Elizabeth Justine Mar 3,1837 Jamoigne, Belgium Feb 3, Anne Marie Nov 18,1838 Jamoigne, Belgium Oct 11, Anne Marie Victoria Nov 15,1840 Jamoigne, Belgium Apr 1, Andrew May 12,1843 Leopold, Indiana Oct 16, John Baptist Nov 25,1845 Leopold, Indiana Jul 27, August Mar 28,1848 Leopold, Indiana Nov 25,1913 Andre arrived in Perry County, Indiana in He had traveled to America from Jamoigne or les Bulles, Belgium with his wife, Marie Elizabeth Gravet Pierre, and four children. Three additional children were later born near Leopold, Indiana. Andrew Peter saw opportunity in the New World for his family. The area of Leopold Township within Perry County, Indiana, was largely wilderness, but others from Belgium were already there or would soon come. The hard work of Andrew Peter and his family turned his chosen land into home, and the Peter family grew and spread. Andre Pierre's wife, Mary Elizabeth Gravet, presents a small puzzle since her maiden name has been seen spelled many ways, for example: Gravet, Grave, and Graves. It may be that she is related to other Graves families that also came to Perry County, Indiana. Several family members have made trips to Belgium and have visited the Semois River Valley. The two towns of Jamoigne and les Bulles are on opposite sides of the Semois River just across from each other. It is difficult to know which of the two villages was home for Andre and his family. Ronald L. Peter of Owensboro, Kentucky has obtained copies of records that show some information on Andre's ancestors. Family names found in the records and cemeteries of Jamoigne, Belgium; Perry County, Indiana; and even Seneca County, Ohio have an uncanny similarity. The Pierre/Peter family left Belgium in the fall of 1841 and sailed from the port of Le Havre, France on board the Mayflower (don't get too excited since this was over 200 years after the pilgrims landed). The Mayflower landed at the Port of New Orleans in January 1842, where the family encountered the U.S. government. Official records show that on this first encounter, the Pierre/Peter last name was confused as a first name. This was probably due to the baptismal certificate conventions in use at the time, since a baptismal record was used as an official identification paper. The records also show that two Goffinet families traveled from Belgium to America with the Pierre family. Whether they were just friends, or what, remains unknown. Just be aware that many, many names found in Perry County and in this book were are still found in the Semois River valley of southeastern Belgium. The strong ties to the past are illustrated by the people still alive today who are third generation Americans and learned to speak English only when they first went to grade school. There is a rich history associated with the town of Leopold, Leopold Township, Perry County, and the people who settled there. Maybe someday an attempt will be made to tell a more complete story of their lives.

The family is heavily concentrated in these three counties, but is also clustered around these following areas: Evansville, Indiana - Owensboro, Kentucky Jeffersonville, Indiana - New Albany, Indiana - Louisville, Kentucky Fostoria / Tiffin / New Riegel, within Seneca County, Ohio Colville, Washington Indianapolis and Kokomo, Indiana Rhodelia, Kentucky

8 8 Andre Pierre -- Andrew Peter Family Tree 3/29/2008 Map of Belgium The villages of les Bulles and Jamoigne are small and are not shown on most European maps. The Province of Luxembourg is in southeast Belgium, bordering the countries of France and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. The Semois River Valley is a good landmark to follow when looking for Jamoigne and les Bulles. Belgium is 1/3 the size of Indiana. Jamoigne is less than 5 miles from France. Florenville Les Bulles

9 3/29/2008 Andre Pierre -- Andrew Peter Family Tree 9 Family Treasures This section is a compilation of old documents. The original documents are currently in my father's possession. When Andre Pierre was an old man, he and his wife lived with his youngest son, August Peter. When Andre died he left a large number of papers to August. August then died before his wife, Catherine (Meunier) Peter. She moved to Seneca County, Ohio to live with her youngest daughter, Bertha (Peter) Ward, wife of Henry Ward. Upon the death of Catherine Peter, the papers passed to Alfred Peter and in 1962 to Raymond Peter. My father, Raymond Peter, knew that the old trunk in the attic had many old pictures and family treasures, but hadn't looked at the contents of the trunk until 1982 when we spent a Sunday afternoon rediscovering the items. The items that follow include: 1. Family baptismal Record from Jamoigne, Belgium. 2. Citizenship Papers for Andrew Pierre 3. Excerpts from "History of Warrick, Spencer, and Perry Counties, Indiana 1885" 4. 12 12 Andre Pierre -- Andrew Peter Family Tree 3/29/ Excerpts from "History of Warrick, Spencer, and Perry Counties, Indiana 1885 " History of Warrick, Spencer, and Perry Counties, Indiana Goodspeed, Bros. & Co., Publishers 1885 ANDREW PETER, a prominent old citizen of Leopold Township, and one of its first settlers, is a native of the kingdom of Belgium, born March 28,1808, being the youngest in a family of nine children born to John and Mary C. (Gobin) Peter. He was reared and educated in his native country, and in the year 1842, immigrated to the United States, landing at New Orleans. He immediately came to Perry County, Ind., of which he has been a resident ever since. He first settled where the village of Leopold is now situated, but at the time there was nothing to mark the spot but a heavy forest of trees and underbrush. Mr. Peter felled the first tree where now stands Leopold. Since his location in Perry County, He has been one of its best citizens and one of its enterprising and successful farmers. February 5,1832, he united in marriage with Mary E. Gravet, and to their union a family of seven children were born, of which the following named are survivors: James (who married Annie C. H. Goffinet) Elizabeth J. (the wife of John J. Evrard) Victoria (now Mrs. James Rogers), John B. (whose wife was Victoria Etienne) and August E., who selected Catherine Meunier for his wife. Mr. Peter has always followed agricultural pursuits in this country, and is at present assisted by his youngest son. In his native land he was an employee in some of the many foundries of that country. March 12,1882, Mrs. Peter, a true wife and mother, died. The survivors are all Democrats in politics, and of the Catholic faith in religion. 4. Letter from the Congregation of St. Augustine's Parish - a typed copy The Congregation of St. Augustine at Leopold, Perry Co., Indiana, in consideration of the numerous sacrifices and great devotedness constantly exhibited by Andrew Pierre to St. Augustine's Congregation since his arrival from Belgium in 1842 offers as a token of thankfulness a particular lot in the grave yard destined for burial purposes of this great benefactor's family. 14 14 Andre Pierre -- Andrew Peter Family Tree 3/29/2008 While the histories of Cannelton, Tell City, and Troy are well known to many local people, the histories of many other Perry County towns remain overlooked. Aware of offense to St. Croix, Derby, and Tobinsport among others, we will merely say that Leopold has one of the most interesting histories of any Perry County town. In the words of historian Tom de la Hunt, "Leopold's development was distinctively individual from the rest." In 1838 Rev. Julian Benoit, pastor of Perry County's first catholic church, St. Mary's at Derby, established three missions. Along with missions at Magnet and Troy, the young pastor established a mission at a place called Chapel, the present site of Leopold. Within months of the missions establishment, Benoit moved his residence to Chapel, and by the winter of 1840, had written friends in France, Belgium, and Germany of the opportunities in the area. In the spring of 1841, Benoit was replaced by the newly ordained Augustus Bessonies, a French native given credit for the town's founding. By this time, the immigrants were pouring into the area. These early French and Belgium settlers make Leopold the only town in Perry County that was not primarily settled by Germans, Swiss-Germans or Anglo Saxons. Most of the first residents were from les Bulles, Belgium, a part of Belgium under heavy French influence. Most of the Perry County names French in origin-peter, Goffinet, Marcilliat, Genet, Nicolay, Meunier, Naviaux, and Etienne--originally settled around Leopold. According to a paper given in 1972 by the late Mrs. D.C. Goble to the Perry County Historical Society, "religious oppression at home and the chance to be their own master, together with the glowing accounts from missionaries provided the original impetus to the settlement. Mrs Goble also cited the adventuresome spirit of the 1840's in Europe. Father Bessonies entered the original deed for the town of Leopold in Bessonies was given 40 acres of land from which he drew up a town platt containing 36 blocks and 100 building lots. Six streets running north and south- Belgium, Celestine, Lafayette, Washington, Caroline, and German- and six streets running east and west- Rome, Ohio, Indiana, St. Louis, Troy, and St. Augustine- provided the 36 blocks. Bessonies left four lots in the center of town for his disposal. He hoped to donate the lots to the county when Leopold was chosen county seat. (Despite its central location, Leopold was never seriously considered for a county seat, neither in 1859 when the seat was moved to Cannelton nor in 1897 when Tell City attempted a second relocation.) By 1847 Bessonies had built a small log building, naming it St. Augustine after his patron saint. At that time, Leopold contained a log school house, a store, a blacksmith shop and a post office. Bessonies was also in charge of the first town post office, having been appointed to that position by President James K. Polk with the help of the friendship of prominent Indiana Politician, William English. According to de la Hunt, Bessonies was a "vertiable circuit rider" who said Masses weekly in Derby, Leavenworth, Corydon, Newton Stewart, Taylorville, and Rockport from his Leopold base. De la Hunt also relates that in 1849, Bessonies said the first mass in Cannelton at the Unitarian Meeting House, now St. Lukes Episcopal Church. (Father Hilger's History of St. Michaels Parish challenges this assumption and claims the first mass in Cannelton was offered in 1847 at the home of John Kierney on Richardson Street.) The second St. Augustine's church was built shortly after the Civil War. In the 1890's a mission was conducted from Leopold by the Rev. F.X. Wininger who preached in three languages: French, German, and English. Also three Benedictine Sisters from Ferdinand came to teach school in the 1890's. One of the more important stories of Leopold's later history also concerns the church, specifically the statue of Our Lady of Consolation on the church's side altar. The statue is a replica of the Our Lady of Consolation statue which still rests in Luxemburg, Luxemburg. The original became famous in 1628 after Europe suffered a terrible siege of the Bubonic Plague and several miraculous cures were attributed to the Blessed Mother following visits to the shrine. During the Civil War, three Leopold soldiers, Lambert Rogier, Henry Devillez and Isadore Naviaux were prisoners at the infamous Andersonville prison camp. With soldiers dying all around, the soldiers found solace in Mary, the Consoler of the afflicted, and made a promise if they ever got out of the prison alive they would make a shrine in her honor. In 1867 they went to Luxemburg and after an 11 month ordeal returned with a replica of the statue, one of only two resting in the United States. In 1960 an outdoor shrine was built to the Blessed Mother and pilgrimages were started to St. Augustines in the 1960's because of the statue. Leopold's history and the history of St. Augustine's Church together tell much of the past of central Perry County. Reprinted with permission of the author- Lee Huber. From the newspaper series.
