All students have been issued with their personal timetables which detail the title and time of every exam. It is really important they have that readily available to them and that they have it clear in their head when each exam is taking place. It is a congested timetable at times so it is very important that they have planned their revision to coincide with the timetable and that they are ready the day before each exam, knowing when and what is happening the following day. Every year one or two students forget or misread the date or time and miss an exam. Parents, please do make sure you too have a copy of the timetable so that you can support them at this very stressful time. If you are uncertain about anything, then please do get in touch. Missing an exam means that it is missed altogether. They cannot be sat at any other time and the timings are set by the examination boards so we have no flexibility over them at all. If, for some reason, your child is ill then please do inform us but for it to be taken into consideration by the exam board you will need a doctor s medical note confirming the nature of the illness. Earlier this week, Anthony Roche, Director of Student Progress, spoke to Y11 and talked them through a number of ways they can manage this period and ways in which they can reduce or control their stress levels. Of course the best way to counteract much of the stress is to be as well prepared as possible, so using the last series of lessons that are available to them is important and taking advantage of any of the half-term classes will also help. However, it is also important to get balance into their lives, to give space for relaxation, to get plenty of good quality sleep and to eat sensibly and regularly. Just as any sportsperson takes their nutrition seriously, so should those taking their examinations. The energy expended over this period is every bit as extreme as an athlete taking part in their sport and the brain needs feeding appropriately, just like the muscle system. To this end we will be providing a free breakfast to Y11 students from next week. They can choose from cereal, toast and/or fruit plus a healthy drink. Starting the day appropriately fuelled is an essential element of examination success. Do please encourage them to eat well at the start of the day, continued overleaf.
2 editorial continued whether at home or at school. Starting the day on a high energy, high sugar drink is not appropriate, providing completely the wrong type of energy. They have been well prepared and there are now only a few more traditional school days left so it is now time to wish them every success. GOOD LUCK to them all. Sports Awards Evening 25 th May I should like to draw your attention to an important new edition to our calendar. We have a number of events over the year to celebrate academic success or success in the arts but no special event to celebrate the many great sporting achievements of our students. As a result we have decided to introduce a Sports Awards Evening, the first of which and will be held in May. Parents and friends will be invited to an evening of presentations to students covering a full range of sports in Years 7, 8, 9 and 10. The evening will also include special displays and a short talk from a former student, Kelly Larkin, who has made her way towards the top of the women s football world. Kelly will also present the prizes and it will all be finished off with a buffet supper in the dining-room. We hope this will be a great success and will become an annual feature. I look forward to seeing you there. Ian Jungius Headteacher Ski Trip 2017 I am delighted to announce that the school will once again be organising a school ski trip during the 2017 February half-term break next year to Austria for Year 10 and 11 students (current Year 9 and 10 students). Letters are available from Mr Brennan. As places are limited selection will be on a first come first served basis. No reply slips or money will be collected before that time. Mr Brennan
3 Summer Lecture with Dorit Oliver-Wolff Be tolerant. Learn about someone before you judge them on their race, colour or religion This was the message highlighted to some of our students who attended this talk along with students from other schools as part of the Eastbourne Schools Partnership work that we are involved in. This inspiring lecture was delivered by Dorit Oliver-Wolff, whose presentation re-told the horrific story of a child growing up through and surviving the holocaust, her memories of living in hiding with her mother and nearly starving to the brink of death. But also the life that Dorit made for herself afterwards as a young adult. Students and staff were astounded by the dedication and courage shown by this witty character before them. Dorit spoke about her ordeals with honesty and sincerity, showing no anger or hatred for the people who had persecuted her younger life, but focusing on the positives of creating a future without fear and the importance of NEVER giving up on your dreams. Mrs Naylor Sainsbury s Active Kids 2016 The PE Department are collecting the Sainsbury s Active Kids vouchers. These vouchers are exchanged for sports equipment to be used in lessons and enrichment clubs as well active experience sessions. If you have any vouchers please could you donate them to the school by bringing them to the PE1 by 1 st July Mr Gordon
