1 HELSINKI TOURISM STATISTICS SEPTEMBER 2016 Registered bednights up 5 per cent In September 2016, almost 308,000 overnight stays were recorded in Helsinki, of which 133,000 were spent by domestic visitors and 174,000 nights by foreign visitors. Bednights spent by Finnish visitors increased by 11 per cent, and those by foreign visitors increased a little more than 1 per cent. The number of Russian visitors in September increased for the first time since 2012, 8400 registered bednights (+ 9 %). In total, the bednights were up 5 per cent. In September 2016, the number of bednights in Finland was 1.69 million (+ 5 %), of which Finns accounted for 1.22 million (+ 5 %) and foreign visitors for 420,000 (+ 3 %). Overnight stays by Russian visitors totalled for 40,000 (+ 10 %). Up in September China + 19 % USA + 13 % Finland + 11 % Down in September Germany -22% France -20 % Italy -13% Nights spent by business travellers increased Of the total number of bednights in accommodation facilities, 168,000 (+ 9 %) were for business purposes and 140,000 (+ 3 %) leisure. Accommodation facilities received 190,000 visitors, which was 9 per cent more than a year previously. Both Finns and foreign visitors accounted for 95,000 (Finns + 15 % and foreigners + 4%). Visitors arriving from Russia totalled 5,000 (+ 3 %). Accommodation turnover EUR 25 million Registered accommodation turnover (VAT included) in the area rose by 9 per cent and was EUR 25 million. The average price of a bednight in September 2016 was EUR 81,98 euroa (+ 3 %). Tax-free sales down by 2 per cent Tax-free sales in Helsinki decreased 2 per cent, while in the entire country tax-free sales stayed at the same level as a year earlier. Tax-free purchases by Chinese visitors decreased 10 per cent, but increased by Japanese 30 per cent in Helsinki. Taxfree purchases by Russian visitor in Helsinki were 17 per cent lower than a year earlier, when the decrease in the entire country was 1 per cent. Air traffic up 3 per cent The number of passengers at Helsinki Airport in September was 1.52 million (+ 6 %). Of these 229,000 (+ 5 %) took domestic flights while 1.29 million (+ 6 %) took international flights. 457,000 people arrived by ship In September, 457,000 passengers arrived in the Port of Helsinki (+ 1 %). Of the passengers, 310,000 came from Estonia(+ 1 %), 80,000 from Sweden (- 3 %) ja 20,000 from Russia (+ 16 %). Less than 6,000 passengers arrived from Germany (+ 8 %). Cruise ships brought 41,000 travellers (+ 2 %) to Helsinki in August. 1
