In the depths of January and February, when it s cold and gray and dark outside, it s easy to get caught up in feelings of sadness, exhaustion and general discomfort. And in fact, there s more to it than just feeling blah. Seasonal affective disorder a type of depression that affects people at a certain time of year, usually the winter, making them feel moody and drained of energy impacts millions of individuals each year. But before you give up and decide to hibernate until the sun shines again, try these practical tips for beating the winter blues. See the Light: Make a point of regularly getting outside during the day if possible, or otherwise, investing in a UV light to help soak up the benefits of sunlight while you're inside. Stay Active: Exercise really can make you happy. Running and other aerobic activity can release mood-enhancing endorphins, and a brisk outdoor jog can particularly help to silence your thoughts and reframe a negative mindset. Spend Time with Friends: It's easy to get into a rut of not going out during the winter, but try to make an effort to spend time with the people you care about. It's nearly impossible not to feel better about life when you're enjoying conversations and fun activities with friends. Perform an Act of Kindness: Sometimes, the best way to stop feeling bad for yourself is to do something nice for another person. In fact, research has shown that a simple act of kindness can indeed boost happiness levels, so go out and do a favor for a stranger or someone you love. Eat Right: Eating small, well-balanced meals throughout the day, with plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, will help you keep your energy up and minimize mood swings. Brought together by faith, St. Mary s School is a Franciscan family welcoming and inspiring all to love, live, learn and serve as Christ taught us!
