Student Portfolio Work Sample: Student final presentation printed as handouts with three slides per page. This may be printed or saved to the grade level share drive. Core Curricular Area: Social Studies/ Language Arts State Standards: Social Studies ; Writing 1.1 and 1.2; Research and Technology Information Literacy Standards: Standards 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 9. Students will be given time to gather facts on their tribes. They will be looking for facts relating to the various aspects of tribal culture, including but not limited to geographical location of the tribe, living family structure, religious beliefs, traditions and customs, clothing, housing, and other interesting facts. Students will be given handout Storyboard: The Big Picture to help organize their work. Computer-based activity: Students will bring their research into the lab. Title slide 1. Open PowerPoint 2. Choose new presentation 3. Choose title slide 4. Click on title box and type title of your report 5. Place cursor on top of box. When crossed arrows appear, left click, hold and drag to the top of the slide. Make sure it is centered. 6. Click on subtitle box and type: by (your name) 7. Place cursor on top of box. When crossed arrows appear, left click, hold, and drag to the bottom of the slide. Make sure it is centered. 8. Save to floppy disk or grade level share drive. Content slides (1-4) *The number of slides is suggested here. The actual number of content slides is left to teacher discretion. 1. Open PowerPoint, open existing file either from floppy or grade level share drive. Copy the file (drag the icon) to the desktop before working on it. 2. Click on view and choose slide sorter. Click cursor behind last slide (it should be there already) 3. Click on insert and choose new slide. Grade Level: 5 Page 1 of 7

4. Choose content slide with text box and graphic. 5. Click in title and type the title of the slide. 6. Click on the text box. 7. Click on format-font and change font and font size (16). 8. Type information from storyboard handout. Should be 3-5 sentence facts. Each sentence will be bulleted. When finished typing, click on tools, spell check and check the spelling. 9. When red lines appear, it means there is a spelling error. Green lines are for grammar and spacing problems. 10. Copy the file back to the floppy disk or share drive and save. Comprehension Question Slide 1. This slide should contain 5 questions about your presentation. The questions will be answered by the class when you present your PowerPoint report. 2. Open up PowerPoint, open up existing file and where it was saved, either from floppy or grade level share drive. Copy the file (drag the icon) to the desktop before working on it. 3. Working last content slide, click on insert new slide and choose blank design. 4. Add a title to this slide, and then the comprehension questions. Make sure to spell check at the end. 5. Resize the text box (just like the graphics and boxes in previous slides) to fit the slide but leaving room for a graphic. 6. Copy the file back to the floppy disk or share drive and save. Adding clip art: 1. Now that all the content is written, you can add clip art to each slide in your presentation. Remember that the clip art you choose must relate to the content of your report. 2. Click on insert (at the top of your screen behind file, edit, view) and click on picture. Choose from clip art. 3. In the lower right side, choose from clipart online. (Microsoft online clipart) 4. In the search box type: Native Americans 5. Choose a picture by clicking on it. Another view of it appears, right click on the image itself, choose copy and then close (click on X) the smaller box and close the site itself. 6. Right click and choose paste. 7. When the picture appears, resize and center it on the page between the two boxes. 8. To resize: Click once on the picture/graphic. Place cursor on any corner and a two sided arrow appears (if crossed, this only moves the object, keeping moving it over the small corner dot until the correct arrow appears). Click, hold and move to the correct size. Put cursor in the middle, a cross appears, click, hold and drag to center. Click outside of the picture and boxes and view title page for sizing and centering. Grade Level: 5 Page 2 of 7

9. Copy the file back to the floppy disk or share drive and save. Adding the backgrounds: *Remember that the background you choose should somehow relate to the content of the slide. PowerPoint windows look different depending on the version of PowerPoint you are using. If you are using Office 2000 software, a window will open. For Office XP, the window will appear at the right of the slide. Follow-up: Sample: It is easiest to simply use this slide as a template for student title slides. When you click the center of the box that says Click to add title, the text disappears, allowing students to type in a title of their own. As a suggestion, students may add their names to the box that says Click to add subtitle. If students have done as instructed, they should be looking at something along these lines: Having made it this far, students may wish to add embellishments, such as color and pictures, to their title slides. One simple way to begin this process is by adding a background. Begin by right clicking anywhere on the background of your slide; don t click within a text box (a place where text shows up on the screen). Instead, try a corner of your slide, and a menu will appear: (below left) Grade Level: 5 Page 3 of 7

For the purposes of this lesson, the following will simply demonstrate how to either add a color or a premade background texture to the slide. Click on Background and a new menu will appear. The next step is to click the small drop down arrow (circled in red), and a further menu will appear: Now, select from one of the colors that appears, as you see below. I selected the green color, clicked the Apply button, and here are the results: As you can see, the background has become green, and the entire slide has become more visually appealing. You are not limited to the colors that initially appear. You may wish to select More Colors to see a much larger selection of colors to choose from. Grade Level: 5 Page 4 of 7

Now, you can also select from a texture rather than a color. Here s how: Right click on the background again to bring up this menu one more time. This time, after clicking the drop down arrow, select Fill Effects And yet another menu appears! On this new menu, head straight for the tab that says Texture, as you can see below: I clicked once on the first texture on the top left and clicked OK. Finally, I clicked Apply on the Background menu, and here are the results: Grade Level: 5 Page 5 of 7

Adding Animation (optional) 1. Click on Slide Show and scroll down to Custom Animation. This is where you can change the way the text appears in your presentation. You can also set the amount of time each slide appears on the screen. 2. Click on Slide Show and scroll down to Slide Transition. This is where you can change the way each slide enters the screen on your presentation. 3. Copy the file back to the floppy disk or share drive and save. 4. Repeat for each slide. Slide show timings: 1. Click on Slide Show 2. Choose Set Up Show 3. In the first section, Show Type, choose presented by a speaker. 4. Near the bottom is the section called Advance Slides. Click on manually. 5. Click OK. Directions for saving work: 1. Under the tool bar select File. Scroll down to Save As. The Save As window will open. Save student work to 3 ½ Floppy (A:) or to the appropriate folder on the grade level share drive. Make sure that the correct choice for saving work is visible in the Save in window. 2. Type the title of the project or the student s name in the File Name box and click Save. *You may also have students type the month and year that the project was completed in the File Name box. This is an easy way to keep track of student progress within the year and over an extended period of time. Example: The Very Happy Turtle, Jan 2003 Mary Sunshine, Mar Either print out a copy of each student s project or save the project to the grade level share drive or floppy disk as a portfolio activity entry. 4. To print, locate and press File. Choose Print from the drop down menu. The print window will open. Check to make sure that the correct printer is selected and click on OK. Follow-up: Students may present their PowerPoint presentations to the class. Students work may be placed in a writing portfolio, in a book of summaries, presented as an oral summary to the class, etc. Teacher can loop all of the student presentations into one long PowerPoint that plays continually on the classroom television monitor during Open House. Grade Level: 5 Page 6 of 7

Feedback: Student Achievement To be completed by teacher Indicate YES or NO: Student scores in Writing, Math, or Literacy improved as a result of this activity. If yes, please state briefly how this activity helped to improve student performance / scores. Suggestions for improvement: Additional comments: Please send this feedback form to the attention of Technology at Professional Development Center. Grade Level: 5 Page 7 of 7
