3 SENIOR GRADUATION DATES Kellam High School s summer graduation is set for Thursday, August 13, 2015 at 6:00 p.m. in the Auditorium. Each home school will hold its own summer school graduation. Additional information will be given out at a later date as it becomes available. STUDENT EXPECTATIONS AND PROCEDURES ATTENDANCE Attendance during summer school is monitored in accordance with School Board Policy Teachers will maintain an accurate record of attendance/absence by class session. A student will not be granted credit if absences are excessive. Absences due to personal illness, illness or death in the family, exposure to contagious disease, religious holidays, extremely inclement weather, or school sponsored/related activities will be excused absences. The parent or legal guardian must provide a written explanation of the absence or tardiness in a timely manner. Each summer school course consists of two class sessions per day. Students are expected to be in attendance at each class session each day. A student will not be granted credit or considered for promotion to the next grade level if absences are excessive. For students taking courses for credit toward graduation, excessive absences are defined as missing more than four (4) class sessions within a given session. A parent/guardian may request a waiver of the summer school attendance policy by submitting the standard waiver request form to the summer school principal at the end of each summer school session. Appeals should be forwarded to the Office of Student Leadership. Teachers will take roll before EACH SESSION to maintain an accurate record in Synergy. Teachers will call parents when a student s absences reach one day which equates to two sessions for a semester course. For a yearlong or two semester course, a teacher will notify a parent or guardian by phone after two and three full day absences which equates to four and six sessions. No warning letters will be mailed home by administration for these absence totals. The parent/guardian will be notified by an administrator by phone and mail for absences resulting in failure of the course. Please note that a student who registers late is counted absent for all days/sessions missed prior to enrollment. There are no prorated absences in summer school. Students that arrive 15 or more minutes late to a class will be marked absent for that session. There will be no AlertNow messages notifying parents of daily absences. Students may miss no more than two full days for a semester course and no more than four full days for a full term course. 3

4 VACATIONS AND OUT-OF-TOWN TRIPS Absence for any reason other than those stated in the attendance policies must receive advance permission from the summer school principal. Such requests must be made in writing and should state the reason for the absence and the date of the absence. Upon returning to school, the student is required to make up all work based on his/her teacher s classroom expectations. Approved absences count toward the attendance policy. TARDY PROCEDURES Students are expected to be punctual in attendance. Students who miss fifteen (15) or more minutes of a class session will be considered absent. Please be sure your child is aware of this regulation and that it applies to both sessions. Teachers may hold their own detention for tardiness. Students who are habitually tardy (four or more times) may be referred to administration for disciplinary action. DISCIPLINE/STUDENT CONDUCT The VBCPS Code of Student Conduct outlines the expectations for student behavior. Students will be subject to suspension or dismissal from classes if they violate polices with regard to student conduct. Any student whose behavior is disruptive and interferes with classroom instruction will be dismissed by the summer school principal and tuition will not be refunded. Students who attended VBCPS during the school year, do not need to sign another Code of Student Conduct. Non-resident and private school students who are accepted to attend summer school must sign and return the Code of Student Conduct. Teachers will review class rules and expectations for students on the first day of class. An administrator will come to each classroom within the first few days to highlight the expectations of the Code of Student Conduct. STUDENT CODE OF DRESS Adherence to the School Board code of dress should be maintained: All students are expected to wear dress appropriate to the occasion; extreme or ostentatious apparel or appearance is to be avoided. Any article of clothing or accessory which advertises alcohol, or an illegal substance, depicts lewd graphics, displays offensive or obscene language, or is gang-related is forbidden. Students in violation of the dress code must contact a parent to bring appropriate clothing. CELL PHONES Students may use cell phones/devices before and after the instructional day, in the hallway and while in the cafeteria for class break. To avoid disruption of the instructional day, students must ensure to follow their teacher s cell phone policy while in the classroom. Music/sound should not be audible at any time. The school will revoke the privilege to possess or use the cell phone or other telecommunication device for violation of the regulation. First Offense 1 Session OSS (Excused Absence) Second Offense 2 Sessions OSS (Unexcused Absences) Third Offense Dismissal from Summer School 4

5 RESTRICTED AREAS Students should only be in areas where they are granted permission by their teacher. CORRIDOR PASSES The expectation is that students use the restrooms during breaks or before school. The teacher will not allow more than one student at a time to leave the classroom or the teacher may choose to take the whole class to the bathroom for a brief break. CONCESSIONS Food and drink concessions will be available in the café during breaks. No food or drink may be consumed in the hallways or in the classrooms. FIRE DRILL PROCEDURES A fire exit route map is posted in each classroom. When a fire alarm is sounded, students must evacuate the school building quickly and in an orderly fashion under the direction of their teacher. Students must remain with their teacher at all times. We will do a fire drill early in each semester. INTERNET USE All non-vbcps students must fill out and have on file an official AUP in order to access the Internet. The Department of Technology recommends the following guidelines for student use of the Internet during summer school: Any non-virginia Beach students must sign and return the Code of Student Conduct in order to access the Internet. All students must follow the Acceptable use of Computers as outlined in the Student Code of Conduct. CLINIC The summer school will operate a clinic staffed by a qualified nurse between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Students must have a teacher pass to enter the clinic unless school has not begun. The clinic is located near the auditorium. SUMMER SCHOOL MAIN OFFICE The summer school main office is located in Room A120. The phone number is

6 ADDITIONAL INFORMATION FINAL GRADE IN A SEMESTER COURSE OR SEMESTER GRADE IN A YEAR COURSE Each semester grade is an average of the classroom grades and the exam, with the classroom grade counting six times and the exam grade counting once. A year long course is made up of two semester grades averaged by two. The second semester includes a final exam with a weight of 1/7 towards the second semester grade. Example: Semester (+ Final Exam) Final Grade 88 x 6 + (84 x 1) = 612 divided by 7 = 87.4 = B+ FINAL GRADE IN A YEAR COURSE The final grade in a year course is an average of the two semester grades. Example: 1st Semester (+ Mid-Term Exam) 2nd Semester Final Exam 88 x 6 + (88 x 1) / 7 = Final Grade 86 x = 600 divided by 7 = 85.7 = B PARKING Students must purchase a parking permit for $ They can be purchased during registration or during breaks the first three days of the session in the cafeteria. Parking for students is limited to the designated parking lot in the front of the building. Maps will be provided at registration. Cars parked in unauthorized spaces and cars parked without proper identification will be booted on the 4th day of each session, and administration will revoke the student s driving privileges to and from summer school. Students assume responsibility for any vehicle parked on school grounds, and Kellam High School assumes no responsibility for damage to vehicles or theft of contents. BUS TRANSPORTATION Schools have been grouped together to form transportation clusters. Bus transportation will be available for many programs from neighborhood pick-up points within the cluster to designated summer school sites. Specific bus route information will be available on the school division s Summer School section at Transportation is provided only within the transportation clusters.
