1 Key Findings Since 2000, the infant mortality rate in Hennepin County has fluctuated annually, but overall rates have remained similar. The Hennepin rate of 4.9 deaths per remains lower than national rates, and similar to Minnesota rates. The highest rate of infant mortality is among African American babies, followed by Hispanic babies. The infant mortality rate among American Indian babies fluctuates, with little consistent pattern. This could be largely due to the small number of American Indian babies born each year. Infant mortality rates are much higher for babies born to USborn African American mothers compared to foreign-born African American mothers. Since 2000, the infant mortality rates in Minneapolis have consistently been higher than suburban Hennepin County. Overview Infant mortality is a public health indicator. Because infants are among the county s most vulnerable residents, infant mortality is an indicator of population health. In 2014, 82 babies in Hennepin County died before their first birthday. This represents 4.9 babies per 1,000 born, slightly below the national rate and the Healthy People 2020 target of deaths per 1,000 babies. In Hennepin County, racial and ethnic disparities mirror those seen nationally, with the highest rates of infant mortality among babies born to US-born African American mothers.
