1 CHATTANOOGA STATE COMMUNITY COLLEGE CHATTANOOGA, TN BUSINESS AND INFORMATION SYSTEMS DIVISION COURSE SYLLABUS CO 249 SPECIAL TOPIC: MOTION GRAPHICS Instructor: Philip Luckey Class Hours/Credit Hours: 3/3 Semester: Fall 2010 Time/Room: R 2:30-5:10/MTC via elearn Phone: (423) (please only call between 9 am 6 pm, is preferred) Catalog Course Description Master and employ advanced electronic video editing and motion graphics skills by completing various assignments utilizing a variety of motion graphics technologies and techniques. Prerequisites: CO 110, CO 241 Corequisites: None Entry Level Standards: Familiarity with Mac OSX operating system and Final Cut Pro. Textbook/Materials: Adobe Classroom In A Book: After Effects CS4, by Brie Gyncild (published by Peachpit Press for Adobe Press). Copyright ISBN: Supplemental Website: A supplemental website within CSTCC elearn will be utilized for communication and other activities associated with the class. I. PROGRAM AND COURSE STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES ASSESSED: PSLO1: Demonstrate the use of the visual language of creative media. CSLO2: Students can use production jargon appropriately. PSLO2: Create an original body of work that meets industry standards. CSLO1: Students understand the application of video editing software. CSLO3: Demonstrate knowledge of the field with portfolio examples of their work. PSLO3: Understand and interpret the needs of clients and markets. CSLO4: Effectively identify diverse target audiences and planning communication messages. PSLO6: Demonstrate the use of appropriate media technologies and theories as applied to practical projects.

2 CSLO1: Students understand the application of video editing software. II. ASSESSMENTS PROJECTS (4) Students demonstrate mastery of material though by completing four assigned projects. Students will write a script and/or a storyboard for each assignment, create or gather the graphics, and create the motion-animated project, and present this to the class. Project 1 The Open (PSLO 1, 3, 6; CSLO 1, 2, 3, 4) Project 2 Infographic (PSLO 1, 6; CSLO 1, 2, 3, 4) Project 3 The Trailer (PSLO 1, 3, 6; CSLO 1, 2, 3, 4) Project 4 Editor s Choice (PSLO 1, 6; CSLO 1, 2, 3, 4) PARTICIPATION/SPECIAL EVENTS Attendance and participation are critical to success in this course. The school s QEP on Work Ethic is directly applicable to this assessment. Students are expected to be in class, on time, and prepared for class discussions as well as participate in special activities as they arise. (PSLO 1, 3, 6; CSLO 1, 2, 3, 4) III. ALIGNMENT OF ASSESSMENTS WITH COURSE STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES: CSLO1 CSLO2 CSLO3 CSLO4 IV. FURTHER DISCUSSION OF ACTIVITIES AND EXPECTATIONS FOR ASSIGNMENTS Motion Graphics Projects will be assigned to individual students. Students will apply the concepts learned in the text and from class discussion to actual video projects. Students will have some time to work on these during class, but should also expect to spend a considerable amount of time outside of class working on their video projects. Attendance and participation are critical to success in this course. Students are expected to be in class, on time, and prepared for class discussions. As noted above, participation in general class discussions, special assignments and exercises, and attendance will all be considered in the grade. If for any reason a student cannot attend class, the

3 student should notify the instructor in advance in person, via phone or via elearn . Students are responsible for checking elearn and/or contacting the instructor for information on material, assignments, changes to course outline, and other items covered during a missed class. V. ASSESSMENT WEIGHTS AND GRADING SCALES Assessment Weights: 20% Assignments 80% Grading Scale: A: 90% - 100% B: 80% - 89% C: 70% - 79% D: 65% - 69% F: Below 65% VI. COURSE DELIVERY FORMAT This class utilizes the Hybrid Format. This format requires significant online activity. Students in hybrid classes must access course content and assessments using the Internet in order to pass the class, whether it meets full-time or part-time in the classroom. Faculty need not hand out a copy of the syllabus and any other required course material, including their contact information. VII. COLLEGE POLICIES This class is governed by the policies and procedures stated in the current Chattanooga State Student Handbook. Additional or more specific guidelines may apply. ADA Statement Students who have educational, psychological, and/or physical disabilities may be eligible for accommodations that provide equal access to educational programs and activities at Chattanooga State. These students should notify the instructor immediately, and should contact Disabilities Support Services (S-113, phone ) within the first two weeks of the semester in order to discuss individual needs. The student must provide documentation of the disability so that reasonable accommodations can be requested in a timely manner. All students are expected to fulfill essential course requirements in order to receive a passing grade in a class, with or without reasonable accommodations. Policy Regarding Disruptive Students The term classroom disruption means student behavior a reasonable person would view as substantially or repeatedly interfering with the conduct of a class. A student who persists in disrupting a class will be directed by the faculty member to leave the classroom for the remainder of the class period. The student will be told the reason(s) for such action and given an opportunity to discuss the matter with the faculty member as soon as practical. The

4 faculty member will undertake prompt consultation with the Division Dean and the College Judicial Officer. If a disruption is serious, and other reasonable measures have failed, the class may be adjourned, and the campus police summoned. Also, if you are concerned about the conduct of another student please see your teacher, department head, or division dean. Academic Integrity/Academic Honesty In their academic activities, students are expected to maintain high standards of honesty and integrity. Academic dishonesty is prohibited. Such conduct includes, but is not limited to, an attempt by one or more students to use unauthorized information in the taking of an exam, to submit as one s own work themes, reports, drawings, laboratory notes, computer programs, or other products prepared by another person, or to knowingly assist another student in obtaining or using unauthorized materials. Plagiarism, cheating, and other forms of academic dishonesty are prohibited. Students guilty of academic misconduct, either directly or indirectly through participation or assistance, are immediately responsible to the instructor of the class. In addition to other possible disciplinary sanctions, which may be imposed through the regular institutional procedures as a result of academic misconduct, the instructor has the authority to assign an F or zero for an activity or to assign an F for the course. VIII. INSTRUCTOR POLICIES The instructor reserves the right to modify this syllabus in writing during the course of the semester. Computer Requirements This class requires use of word processing and spreadsheet software. Access to the Internet, specifically Chattanooga State s elearn system is required. The college offers computer labs for student use and computers are also available in the CSCC Library. Written assignments, the project and other work are required to be typed and/or word processed, and presented in a professional manner as one would a document in a business setting. Research is required for this class and often use of the Internet will be required for this research. The CSCC Library requires use of computers to search their databases and other on-site reference materials. If you have any concerns or questions regarding these requirements, please see the instructor. If sending , please utilize the elearn system. Submission of Coursework All written assignments, the course project and other assigned work must be submitted via the appropriate course website dropbox in elearn. Class exercise preparation, instructions for written assignments and the project, as well as other relevant announcements regarding course work and/or related activities will be posted in elearn on the course website. Communication between Class Meetings You are encouraged to contact the instructor as needed between class meetings. This contact can be in person during regularly scheduled office hours or by appointment, by telephone, or by within elearn. Phones, Laptops, and Recording Devices: Please turn off cell phones during class time. If you need to be contacted in an emergency situation, your party may call the Division Office at or the campus operator at Laptops are allowed for note taking but may not be used for Internet surfing or other activities during class time.
