15 You re not alone

16 So what should you do now? 1. Get them to teach you about how things work. 2. Support the school Sign the Acceptable Use Policy and take an active interest in what your children are doing in ICT at school. 3. 31 BBMing is the messaging device on a Blackberry. It is similar to texting but not the same - it s instant and you can BBM groups of people at the same time. Until recently, Blackberry handsets did not have parental controls. The very good news is that the situation has changed - BlackBerry Parental Controls are available via BlackBerry App World for customers with a BlackBerry 6, BlackBerry 7 OS smartphone or BlackBerry Device Software 5. The free app provides parents and guardians simple options to help them protect their children by restricting access to specific functions, features and applications on the smartphone.

32 Support the School

33 SEXTING

34 What is it? - sending sexually explicit messages/images/videos - text, or through social networking sites - could be just posing or may be images of sexual acts (either alone or with someone)

Loss of control of the messages/images/videos Severe bullying by peers Breakdown in family relationships Depression Suicide Criminal record (for sharing indecent images of underage people) Future employment, education and relationship prospects Increased tendency to engage in sexual activity

36 A Reminder to all GHC Pupils You are responsible for you activities online and on your mobile phone. This means that the making and sharing of any photos or videos that are intended to humiliate, upset, offend or cause harm to anyone in the College community will not be tolerated. Do not share offensive messages/photos/videos Do not say or post things that you believe might upset, humiliate or offend someone. Do not send or encourage others to send nude or semi nude photographs. Report any issues to a member of staff.

37 Research in relation to sexting -12% of year olds in the UK have seen or received sexual messages online, 2% receiving them more than once a week (EU Kids Online, 2010, 2011) - 1 in 3 teenagers have received sexually suggestive messages (Cross, Richardson and Douglas, 2009) - 40% of young people say their friends share personal images. 30% knew of people who had been adversely affected by sexting, 10% had been personally affected (Phippen, 2009)

Know what to do if something goes wrong. Watch Thinkuknow films to learn more.
