Heaven / Hell / Purgatory / Understanding Death / Original Sin / Mercy What do we want the students to learn today? (Objectives 1 to 3): o Death is the end of our physical life on earth, but is also the start of a new life o Through Jesus death and Resurrection it is possible for us to share in the reward of Heaven o At the Final judgment all will be raised from the dead and will appear before Christ, and the Kingdom of God will come in its fullness 5 min: Open Prayer ***After the opening prayer have them stay in a prayerful mode and go right into this reflection, have them close their eyes and just think about what you are saying. Think about the most peaceful place that you have ever been. A place that takes away all your worries and fears away; if you can t remember a place then just create one in your mind. (pause) Is this what you think Heaven looks like? Take some time to think about what you believe Heaven looks like. (pause for a short time and end the prayer time) Review 1. Review topics from previous lessons Lesson 5-10 min: Original Sin Have a student read Gen 3: 1-13 We are all born with Original Sin, the sin of the first man and woman, passed on to all people through which we are weakened in our ability to resist sin. Some people don t believe that just because our first parents did one bad thing we all have to suffer for it. Think of it this way; A man steals money from his work (sin) and gets caught. He loses his job and goes to jail. His wife can t afford to buy groceries, pay the bills or mortgage. They lose their house, his family is now on the street. Their son breaks into a store to steal money for food, and so the cycle continues. Have a student read Gen 4: 1-8 This is just like what Adam and Eve did, they walked with God, they knew God, they talked to God. God gave them everything and all He asked was that they didn t eat the fruit from the tree of good and evil. If they did they would die. The serpent tricked Eve and said that they wouldn t die. When Adam and Eve eat the fruit, death entered the world and it affected their children. Adam and Eve had three sons, Cain, Abel, and Seth. Cain was jealous of Abel and killed him. This

affected the next generation, and so on and so on, and so on. Everyone is affected by everyone s sin. When we are baptized, we are born to a new life with Christ and can have salvation. Through Baptism we are forgiven of Original Sin (and all personal sin if older babies don t have personal sin yet), and become members of the Body of Christ, the Church. Sins are our actions, thoughts, words, or desires that are contrary to God s law. Simply sin is saying no to God. There are two types of sin: mortal sin and venial sin. Mortal sin is a conscience and free choice to commit a serious violation of God s law. Mortal (or deadly) separates us from God s grace. If we die without seeking forgiveness for a mortal sin, we face separation from God for all eternity. A venial sin is less serious offense God. It does not separate us from God s grace but weakens our relationship with Him and with the Church community. It weakens our ability to resist mortal sin. In the next two weeks we will be talking more about what is sin as we go through the Ten Commandments min: Death, Heaven, Hell and Purgatory Most people do not like to think about death. It can be a sad time if we see it as the end of person s life rather than the beginning of their new life with Christ. At the time of our death, our soul and body separate and we undergo a personal or particular judgment in which we stand before the God of the universe and receive either the eternal reward of Heaven or the eternal punishment of Hell. Simply put, Heaven and Hell are a state of either eternal happiness with God or eternal separation from Him, they are not physical locations. Let s look at each one a little deeper. Hell We cannot be united with God unless we freely choose to love Him. But we cannot love God if we gravely (seriously mortal) sin against Him. (CCC 1033) Therefore, hell is living eternity completely separated from God that means forever! To some people, that doesn t seem to be a big deal; that is because they have no idea how much God is with them right now and what life would be like without God. They don t know God so they can t understand how bad it would be. That is why we hear descriptions like it is a burning fire that never ends. Some people will say that they don t believe that a loving God would send anyone to hell. When you die and you stand before God your whole life will be before you and you will know and understand if you chose to love God or if you rejected God in your life. God gives us free will, and we have the freedom to love God or reject God. He doesn t want anyone to suffer in

hell, but some will choose to reject God and by doing that they choose eternal punishment. And because God is a just God, He will allow them the consequence of their choice. Heaven The Catechism says that Heaven is the ultimate end and fulfillment of the deepest human longings, the state of supreme, definitive happiness. (ccc 1024) Some people think that heaven will be like being able to play golf everyday whenever they want to and not having to go to work. Now maybe for some of you that would be the same as shopping all the time with no limit of how much money you have to spend. Or for others that might mean playing video games as long as you want and your mom never telling you to stop. Now think about the beginning of class, what you thought heaven is like. I can assure you that Heaven isn t even close to what you believe Heaven is. Read 1 Corn 2:9 We can t even begin to understand what God has prepared for each and every one of us. Purgatory - Through his death and resurrection, Jesus made it possible to share in the reward of Heaven. Of course, most people do not die in a perfect state of holiness. Therefore, before entering Heaven, some souls must undergo a period of purification to achieve the holiness necessary for eternal joy with God in Heaven. This purification process is what we call Purgatory. While we are still on earth, there are many things that we can do to become more holy. Through our prayers, fasting, suffering, sacrifices, penances, good works; all these things we can offer up to God for reparation (repairing) for our sins and also the sins of others. However, once we enter purgatory we can no longer do anything to change our state of being. So what happens now? This is where one of the most powerful and the most beautiful teachings of the church comes in. Remember that when we become Baptized we become members of the Body of Christ, the Church? The souls in purgatory along with the saints and angels are always praying for us. And we should always be praying for those in purgatory. (We don t need to pray for saints because they are already in Heaven) Our prayers actually get people out of purgatory. There are some people in purgatory that have been there since the beginning of time because they have no one to pray for them. There are some people that are only one prayer or one Mass away from Heaven. That is why at each Mass we pray for the souls in Purgatory and on the second day of November, we remember them in a special way, the Feast of All Souls day. During November, we have a book of remembrance where parishioners can list names of deceased relatives and friends. It is an occasion to help souls in Purgatory reach the gift of Heaven through are prayers, giving and works of penance. Isn t that awesome! So if you have a loved one that has passed away pray for them and know that they are praying at every moment for you! What a comfort that is when we see how God s divine plan connects us.

One thing that we need to understand is that Purgatory is a gift that God s gives us. Very few people die in the perfect state of holiness, and for many if we didn t have purgatory the only other option would be hell. God is mercy! Catechist insight: The Catechism of the Catholic Church states: "All who die in God s grace and friendship, but still imperfectly purified, are indeed assured of their eternal salvation; but after death they undergo purification, so as to achieve the holiness necessary to enter the joy of heaven. The Church gives the name purgatory to this final purification of the elect, which is entirely different from the punishment of the damned" (CCC ). Key concepts: Heaven: Everlasting happiness with God and with the Virgin Mary and all the Angels and Saints Purgatory: A Final purification from sin after death, which one may need before entry into Heaven Hell: Everlasting separation from God, reserved for those who freely and consciously reject Him. 10 min: The Last Judgment Have you heard people say things like the second coming or when Jesus returns? Do you know what they are talking about? Have a Student read Acts 1:6-12 Jesus will come again and He will return the same way you have seen Him going into Heaven. Although we cannot begin to speculate how or what it will be like when Jesus comes again. We do know that when He comes everyone will know the sign. The question is are you ready? What does it mean when Jesus comes again? Have a Student read Matthew 25:31-34 The catechism says that The resurrection of all the dead, of both the just and the unjust, will precede (come before) the last judgment. (CCC 1038) So that means that when Jesus comes again, and everyone has had their particular judgment, everyone will be united with their bodies again. However, the body will be in a glorified state of being. Then all of humanity will stand before God and God will judge humanity as a whole. At this time, all will see the glory of God s Divine Plan and the consequences of how each person s good works built up the kingdom and each person s sins harmed it. (Ref. CCC 1039) Clarification: At your particular judgment, you will go to Heaven (either straight to Heaven or a detour through Purgatory) or to Hell. The Last judgment does not change your destination! You will be reunited with your body and continue in eternal salvation or eternal damnation for eternity, but now body and soul.

15 min: Mercy In the Gospel of Matthew, we read several parables in which Jesus tells us about the Last Judgment when those who have been true to the Word of God will receive eternal reward, while those who have not will receive eternal punishment. Continuing on in the scripture reading from Matthew, Jesus talks about how when he returns at the end of time, all people will be judge according to how they lived. Have a Student read Matthew 25:34-46 In everyday English, Mercy has a very restricted meaning. It is usually used to refer to an act of pardon, as in "Let me off, judge; have mercy" or "He threw himself on the mercy of the court." In the Catholic tradition however, mercy means far more than just the cancellation of punishment. Mercy is love s second name. Mercy is the virtue that guides us to offer assistance to a person suffering either physically or spiritually. Mercy also means giving something good to someone that doesn t deserve it. For example: you may think you that someone begging on the street doesn t deserve to be given any food, you may think that they should go get a job. Yet, God pours out His mercy, His love, on us every time He forgives us of our sins. We don t deserve His forgiveness but He gives it freely, we should then turn and give mercy (love) to others freely! Our typical picture of "mercy" is misleading. It brings to mind a person in power taking it easy on a potential victim. We think of a teacher "having mercy" by giving a relatively easy test on a complicated chapter, or a powerhouse basketball team "having mercy" on a weak opponent. But that's not the concept of mercy in the Bible, or in the "works of mercy." The meaning of mercy here is much broader and richer. It includes things like care, making someone else's problem your concern, and readiness to help those in need. Let s go back to the person begging on the street. Maybe instead of giving the person food and walking away, would it be better to give him food but also help him find work or a place to stay that is safe. (Acknowledge that they may be too young to do something like this but try to get them to see the bigger picture) Works of Mercy In religious terms, a "work" is simply a good action something you do. Our Christian heritage lists 14 traditional "works." History doesn't tell us when the official lists were drawn up, but ways of showing mercy are described in Isaiah 58 and in Matthew 25, among other scriptural places. Seven of them concern physical needs and are called the corporal (from the Latin word for body) works of mercy: To feed the hungry; to give drink to the thirsty; to clothe the naked; to shelter the homeless; to visit the sick; to visit those in prison; to bury the dead.

The other seven respond to spiritual and emotional needs: To instruct the ignorant; to counsel the doubtful; to admonish (correct) the sinner; to comfort the sorrowful; to forgive injuries; to bear wrongs patiently; to pray for the living and the dead. In the scripture passage from Matthew we learned whatever good we do for others we do for Christ; whatever harm or lack of kindness we show for others we show for Christ min: Exercise: Follow-up questions: What does Jesus say will happen at the end of the world? (All nations will be assembled before him, and he will separate them as Shepard separates the sheep from the goats.) What does Jesus say will lead to eternal reward? (Jesus tells us that he will reward acts of charity, such as providing food to the hungry, comfort to the sick, visiting those who are lonely or imprisoned.) What does Jesus say will lead to eternal punishment? (Indifference to those who are suffering in any way.) What does this scripture passage tell us about how we treat other people? (Whatever good we do for others we do for Christ; whatever harm or lack of kindness we show for others we show for Christ. Split the class into groups of 2-3. Assign each group three four of the Works of Mercy. Have them think of alternate meanings then the Work states. For example, shelter the homeless, could be providing assistance a senior with housekeeping or yard work enabling them to stay in their home. Have each group discuss ways in which they can apply the Works of Mercy. Have the group report out after discussion. 5 min: Journal time Questions: At the end of time we will be judged according to how we have lived. How does this affect how you live your life? What would be worth doing here on earth that would risk missing out on what God has planned for you in Heaven? Extra time:

Adoration Closing Prayer: The Jesus Prayer Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.
