Tenaris: Creating Consistent and Manageable Test Systems with SAP Test Data Migration Server When constantly high data volumes triggered a series of performance problems in its testing system, Tenaris sought a solution. The solution, based on SAP Test Data Migration Server (SAP TDMS) software, helped ensure high-quality data and full consistency in all nonproductive systems. The result was a fully functioning development and testing landscape.

3 Optimal system landscape helps Tenaris excel in its industry Tenaris consists of a network of manufacturing facilities, service yards, and commercial offices that span the globe. The company with a global workforce of over 26,800 employees provides casing and tubing, line pipe, and various other mechanical and structural steel pipes for different applications. Tenaris whose global headquarters are in Luxembourg City and which maintains R&D centers in Argentina, Mexico, Italy, and Japan manufactures steel pipe products in a wide range of specifications that vary in diameter, length, thickness, finishing, steel grades, threading, and coupling. The tubular products are manufactured under strict quality standards and tested to comply with ISO 9001 requirements. Tenaris also participates in the World Steel Association s Climate Action Program, which collects CO 2 emissions data. Constantly focused on increasing value for its customers through product development, production, and supply chain management, Tenaris also helps its customers minimize risk by enabling them to reduce their costs and improve time to market. In addition, Tenaris s global workforce is tasked with helping customers by sharing knowledge and experience. Tenaris decided that software solutions from SAP an ideal partner for all specific software requirements in the industry was the best option for achieving the company s functional objectives. The company recognized that it also had to maintain its SAP solution landscape so that the software infrastructure remained fully functional while, at the same time, processes could be constantly refined. This required a nonproductive test system that could accommodate development and quality control. 3 / 6

4 Reducing test data volume without compromising quality The main objective of this project was to reduce the size of the test systems, whose data volume had grown to equal the scale of the production system. Tenaris wanted a more compact testing landscape but did not, in the process, want to negatively impact or compromise data quality, consistency, or relevance. In creating this new version of the testing landscape the Tenaris team decided to restrict the selection of data to only the preceding year. The project at Tenaris lasted three months and required two test cycles each with two separate phases. Each test cycle consisted of a phase dedicated to creating a shell for the nonproductive system to house the repository and customization. The second phase focused on the migration of data according to parameters specified in the SAP Test Data Migration Server (SAP TDMS) software. To meet security and data protection standards, the project team scrambled sensitive data. The scrambling approach consisted of two steps: first, through the pseudonymization of data by identifying fields within a data record to be replaced by one or more artificial identifiers; and second, the anonymization of data by using mathematical rules to fully encrypt and remove personally identifiable information from existing data sets. In addition to the standard functionality that SAP TDMS provided, Tenaris added its own existing code to expand and profit from the enhanced scrambling capabilities. The project met all compliance standards. The SAP documentation helped us execute the same solution we d used for the human capital management project without any delay. 5 A more efficient test environment, less costly to maintain Because Tenaris s test systems had grown to the same size as the production system itself, the company had to absorb high maintenance costs. However, by using SAP TDMS in their enterprise resource planning (ERP) system environment, Tenaris managed to reduce the size of the data required for the test system from 5 terabytes to 1.5 terabytes, ensuring full data consistency and quality. SAP TDMS software provides a tool for creating nonproductive systems through the selection of transactional data. This smaller volume of selected data allows for the significant reduction of transferred size. The result is the generation of consistent landscapes of reduced size and lower cost. For Tenaris the immediate benefits of using the SAP TDMS software included reducing the costs of maintaining the testing infrastructure as well as improving software development by optimizing test data and making it more efficient. Now the data is updated regularly in the testing landscape without affecting the repository or the administrative data. 1.5 terabytes Of data extracted from 5 terabytes of production data 5 / 6

6 Tenaris An optimal approach for the remaining nonproductive systems The success of this project has encouraged Tenaris to also use SAP Test Data Migration Server for the rest of its nonproductive systems for development and quality control.
