1 Hetton Lyons Triathlon (incorporating the qualifying events for the NE Region IRC team/squad) Hetton Lyons Country Park Sunday 22 nd July 2012 WELCOME Hetton Lyons Country Park is situated off the A690, 8 miles away from Sunderland in the quiet town of Houghton le Spring. The park is easily located via brown tourist signs from the town centre. The park is a popular sporting venue for walking, cycling, canoeing, swimming and running. The park has previously hosted local running events and national cycling races. The park is the training ground for Hetton Hawks CC who makes great use of the closed road loops around the lake and many local triathlon clubs use the lake for open water training in the summer months. It is owned and managed by Springboard Adventure which is a Sunderland City Council lead partnership. Head for Hetton le Hole and follow brown tourist signs to Hetton Country Park. There is a large car park at the park entrance which is free of charge. Please do not park on the access roads as full access is required for the ambulance. Please do not leave valuables in the car as the organisers or park owners cannot be held responsible for the loss of any items. Registration Registration will take place in the Hetton Visitor Centre next to the car park. All competitors must register for their race between 08:45 and 10:00 on the morning of the triathlon. Please remember to bring your Home Nation membership card otherwise you will be required to pay an additional 2 for a race day licence. At registration you will receive your race numbers, timing chip, goody bag and swim cap. Please be aware that your race numbers will also be written on to one of your arms and legs with a waterproof pen. After registering, please rack your bike in your numbered space in the transition area. All bikes will be checked by our mechanic and must be racked by 10:30 when there will be a compulsory race briefing for all competitors at the transition area.

3 Medical conditions If you suffer from any medical conditions such as asthma, please write this on the back of your race number. This should help ensure you receive the correct treatment in the event of an emergency. We will also be marking your race number in a coloured pen to signify any conditions. Paramedics will be in attendance. Race Briefing The race referee will outline important safety information and make competitors aware of any last minute race changes during this briefing. It is therefore compulsory for all to attend to ensure you have a safe and enjoyable race. Additionally, following the competitors briefing, the referee will carry out a parents/guardians briefing that we would like all parents/guardians to attend. Changing facilities There are male and female changing rooms with toilets, hot showers and lockers inside the Visitor Centre. Please note that there is a small charge for using the lockers. Competitors and spectators should remember that they are leaving their goods and valuables at their own risk. Catering There is a small cafe on site serving hot and cold drinks, snacks and food. There is also a vending machine serving hot drinks in the Visitor Centre. Race Rules The event will be held under the rules of the British Triathlon Federation. Under these rules it is mandatory that all competitors must wear an approved helmet and that all cycles must be in a road worthy condition. Under the rules ALL competitors must be insured by third party civil liability insurance BTF Home Nation Members are insured as part of their membership package, and all other competitors will be required to purchase a day licence at registration. 4 Photography Any parents wishing to take photographs must register their camera at the registration desk to be issued with a photographer badge. Triathlon details Competitors will be grouped into categories according to their age on 31st December Your age group category will determine the distances you will need to complete. Before each race and on the start line we will remind competitors of the number of laps they will complete and the distances. SWIM Tristar Start (8 yr olds) -50m lake swim Tri-Star 1(9-10 yrs) 100m lake swim Tri-Star 2 (11 12yrs) 200m lake swim Tri-Star 3 (13 14yrs) 300m lake swim Youths & Juniors (15 to 19 years old) 400m lake swim PLEASE NOTE: You are advised that inland waters are never completely safe to swim in, although risks of disease and infection are very low and the water quality levels are regularly tested by Sunderland Council. Swimmers are mainly susceptible to infection when their immune systems are low, probably due to ill health at the time, so if you feel unwell on the day of the race it is advisable not to swim. The water temperature and condition are monitored on a regular basis and information will be posted on the morning of the race. The temperature of the water will be displayed on race day and advice given as to the wearing of wetsuits which will be determined by water temperature. At registration you will be issued with a coloured hat specific for your age group in order for the safety canoeists to recognise this fact. There will be safety canoeists patrolling the course. The course is in a clockwise direction, so you must swim keeping the buoys to your right hand side (maps showing the route will be on display at registration). You will never be far from assistance and in the event of any problem please roll on to your back and raise your arm so you can easily be identified and escorted to the side of the lake. IN THE EVENT YOU RETIRE FROM THE RACE & IN THE INTEREST OF SAFETY YOU MUST REPORT TO A RACE MARSHAL GIVING YOUR NAME AND NUMBER.

5 BIKE Tristar Start 1.2 km (1 small lap) Tri star km (2 laps) Tri star km bike (3 laps) Tri star km bike (4 laps) Youths/Juniors 10.9 KM (6 laps) The bike course is situated within the grounds of the park on tarmac roads. The lap is 1.8km in distance and contains a small hill climb around the back of the copse (please see attached map). There will be marshals in place counting laps and each cyclist will be told when they are on their last lap but ultimately competitors will be responsible for counting their own laps. There are a few technical sections on the course that will be signified with marshals waving red flags, when competitors see this they should slow down. It is advisable that cyclists ride with caution on their first lap and get a feel for the course. Remember: Bike helmet is compulsory and must be securely fastened before removing the bike from the racking, and not removed until safely back in the transition area and the cycle is returned to its racking (or retired from the race). Important note Draft legal status We have been awarded draft legal status for the Tristar 2, Tristar 3 and Youth/Juniors races to provide the competitors with a realistic comparison to the IRC event in September. Additional rules applicable to a draft legal event have been forwarded with these instructions and should be read thoroughly. It is particularly important that your bike adheres to the draft legal requirements. As a guide tribars only allowed for those over 14, cannot extend beyond the break hoods and must be mounted parallel with the ground (cannot just turn them up if they are too long!), you also cannot have a bottle mounted on the bars. Minimum 12 spoke wheel construction - wheels must be UCI approved for road racing. If you are not sure ring me before the event as all cycles will be checked by the race referee. All rules of the road must be observed. Any failure to do so or to obey any marshal s instructions may result in disqualification from the race. No personal stereos are allowed this is a disqualifiable offence. Marshals will patrol the course and assist in the return of any competitor who withdraws for mechanical or other reasons. If you require water it must be carried on the bike - no water stations are provided on the cycle route. PLEASE FOLLOW THESE RULES AND HELP PROMOTE THE IMAGE OF OUR SPORT AND GUARANTEE THE USE OF THIS LOCATION FOR FUTURE EVENTS

Marshals will be in place counting laps and competitors will be told when they are on their last lap but ultimately competitors will be responsible for counting their own laps. There will be one drink station on the run course. Runners must be aware that members of public will also be using parts of the course so caution must be applied, however, the public will be made aware of the race and marshals will endeavour to keep the public off the run course. Timing Race Volunteers Please Help No event like this can run smoothly without the help of many marshals. If you have friends or family that will be supporting you at the event, why not ask them if they would be willing to give up a couple of hours to help marshal. Litter Please take your litter home or use the designated bins within the park. All Tristar Start finishers will receive a prize. Each competitor will be given a chip time and results will be available for viewing immediately after the race and will be published on several websites after the race
